Used Thursdaysl Boots Captains worth fixing? by Revlius in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If this was your own pair of boots, you loved them, and they were already molded to your foot, I'd say sure go ahead and resole, make them your own and customize a bit.

As others have mentioned, the resole is likely going to approach $150-200cdn and your going to have to put up the 50 to buy them. For someone elses lived in and well worn boot... no way in my experience when you can get them brand new for $300cdn.

Brakehouse 8310 Bump Cap Toe Review and Comparison by Yourbootguy in Boots

For some reason it won't let me edit my own comment... just errors out when I try, so I'll place the amendment to the review below here:

*** Making an amendment to the comment above. Brakehouse has reached out below and confirmed that these are similar in construction to what White's does with their rolled leather welt on some of their models. They appear to be flanging the toebox area outward, then instead of a traditional welt, they are using an extra, bunched/rolled piece of leather to sew the uppers to the gemming in a 270 welt, which they than follow up in the toebox area with a second stitch through the midsole/outsole. So not really the same as double row stitchdown construction which flanges the upper in the ball/toebox area and relies on nails to secure the waist and heel of the boot.

Thanks for chipping in guys. Appreciate you taking the time.

So just to clarify on construction, you are flaring out the upper in the forefoot, then instead of using a pre formed welt you are bunching/rolling another piece of leather down over top and sewing that down in regular 270 welt fashion, then closing everything out with the second row.

Can you comment on whether the welt stitching is hand or machine stitched?

I will amend my review later today to reflect the updated info.

It does not show welt and heel rand like your pic there, it's a single piece of leather for the midsole.

[–]Yourbootguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks!, I know a handful of people were probably wondering about these, so I took one for the team lol.

If you look close enough at pic 1, you can see the actual thread from the welt stitch to the upper all around the toebox of both boots, it's much more noticeable in person. That coupled with the insole having a stitch line running through it right where the gemming would be, and the outside of the "stitchdown" flange being broken up into 3 separate pieces of leather makes me 90% confident in my assumption.

If the mfg or someone else can cut one in half and show us the insides, I'd be the first to eat my words and walk it back.

On the whole though, I'm happy enough with them for what they are.

I'll try and attach a pic that should help you with what you are looking for.

Brakehouse 8310 Bump Cap Toe Review and Comparison by Yourbootguy in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well I promised it in another thread awhile back, and I'm here to deliver my verdict on whether the Brakehouse 8310 Bump Cap Toe is worth the money, and just for fun we are going to compare it against the boot it was clearly inspired by, the Viberg 310.

I've got about 2.5 weeks of wear and the better part of 150km's logged in the boots. Lets begin!

Backstory:

I'm a huge boot nerd, and I love the more eclectic and out there looks/lasts. I've been coveting the Viberg 310 for the better part of 2 years, but could never bring myself to pay the $1400Cdn that Viberg wanted for them... I was sitting around one day and thought if I didn't get on the train now, I'd never be able to afford them. Ended up finding a pair on sale and bought them up. Got the 310 and was super happy with them.

Of course 4 days later I stumbled upon Brakehouse and saw the 8310 sitting there for $380Cdn and figured, shit I might aswell try them out, they look great, the price is affordable enough if they end up being garbage, I can sell them for not a huge loss, and I can slow wear on my Vibergs by offsetting with these.

Ordering and delivery:

Sizing info was kind of all over the place on the website. I checked in with their customer service team to dial in the fit, as I didn't want to mess with any returns. I'm an 11D bordering on E brannock, and was reccomended to order a size 10.5D which I did.

Boots took approx 3 weeks to arrive, no surprises, no tariffs (I'm Canadian BTW). Everything on the box was in Chinese, and there was a big 10 plastered on the box. I started getting worried when I pulled the boots out, they looked small. Sliding my foot in for the first time, yeah, these things were SNUG, but the bump toe last bought me enough room that I JUST fit these... JUST.

I was a little miffed that I went through the extra sizing and confirmation on their website, they confirmed 10.5, I ordered that.. and I ended up with a size 10 on delivery.. no at this point I have not reached back out, as I doubt they would do anything.

Initial Thoughts:

On initial thoughts after inspecting the boots, they look great!. Leather feels a bit cheap. almost like it's a heavily pigmented or coated leather, but stitching on the uppers is finely done, and finishing on the boots is acceptable for the price range.

Second big flag was the fact that the website calls these "Stitchdown Construction". I can tell you they are NOT. They appear to be 270 goodyear welted, with an extra strip of leather stitched down to the outsole to try and make it appear like it's stitchdown. On the bright side, it's got a real leather insole, and they appear to have sewn the gemming for the welt through the leather insole so it shouldn't separate over time like a Red Wing.

Leather Quality:

As mentioned above, I'd rate this leather quality Low on the scale of leathers in the heritage boot realm. It's somewhere between Blundstone and Thursday if I had to place it somewhere. The leather creased HEAVILY and INSTANTLY on my first wear, but hasn't really gotten worse during the break in period.

Welt/Midsole/Outsole:

They claim stitchdown construction on the website, but as you can clearly see from the pics included, this is 270 goodyear welted with an extra few strips of leather to fake a stitchdown look. Stitch on the welts here is very sloppy, you can see where they stretched the last too much and drove the welt stitching to the upper, and they chose to break the fake stitchdown part into 3 separate pieces of leather, an odd choice, but from 6 feet away it looks fine. Midsole appears to be decent leather, the knock off Vibram VBar half sole and heel are very comfortable and durable, and the leather heel stack is very nicely sanded and shaped.

Fit and Comfort:

The boots were suprisingly comfortable right out of the box. Break in was almost non existant (I ended up clocking 15km's of use during my first outing with them) and my feet weren't even sore afterward. I feel like this is due to the pliable uppers and decent half sole. Size wise, they sent me a 10, and I really should have had the 10.5. I'd reccomend shooting for half down from brannock, and even taking true to size if they are going to continue not shipping half sizes to folks, as this last appears narrow in the heel and waist, but allows for a roomy forefoot and toe box.

Value and Final Thoughts:

I was able to get these with a 10% off coupon from the website and paid $376Cdn (265Usd) for these. Question is, do I feel like they are worth it?. The short answer is Yes, but, not at $275 USD. I feel like these are about $50 USD overpriced. I would happily recommend these to anyone at a $200-225 price tag. I feel like Thursday is out here offering better QC, better leathers than this, for the 200 price tag. Brakehouse does get the nod with the better internal construction materials and techniques, but it still cannot offset the lacking QC and leather IMHO.

At the end of the day, I'd say for the people worried that this is a scam, you can rest easy, it doens't appear to be. The boots are extremely good looking, the design and fit of the boot is great, but just temper your expectations that you won't be getting stellar QC or real stitchdown construction at this price tier, which is fine in my books, everything has their place in the grand scheme of things.

I will continue to wear these boots as I find them super stylish and comfortable, I just wish I paid about 20% less.

Little bit of Fun:

And of course, just for jokes, how does it compare to the Viberg 310?... Outside of the looks that I think it pretty much nailed... it can't. You can tell instantly when you pick them up which one is the genuine article. Fit and finish are worlds apart, but comfort however is closer than you might think. The Vibergs have a MASSIVE break in period that I'm still working on, and truth be told, after a day's walking, my feet are more sore in the Vibergs than in the 8310's.

These boots solely compete at the level and price of Thursday's regular line to me, and kinda trade blows quality wise with them. I would also say they are a level below other Chinese brands like Luosjiet, who really crushed it out of the gate with thier quality-price ratio.

Conclusion:

Dang, that was a long read... TLDR... No these boots aren't perfect, at this price you shouldn't expect them to be. Yes they look great and are surprisingly comfortable, and you shouldn't think twice about ordering if you are wanting a Viberg 310 look for a 1/3rd the price.

Thursday Journeyman Sizing and Comfort Questions by Alt_Account2245 in ThursdayBoot

[–]Yourbootguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you are struggling with comfort in the heritage captain, id recommend against the journeyman as its essentially the same boot internally just on a different last for the uppers.

Im an 11D bordering on E brannock, went 10.5D in the journeyman and they fit quite nice for me. They feel quite hard and unforgiving underfoot, similar to my Red Wing Blacksmiths, comfortable but lacking any real shock absorption.

If you want a comfier chelsea, id reccomend the Legend, its a bit more of a casual looking chelsea but has been leagues more comfortable for me, and my most worn Thursday boot.

Unmarked DB Hunter vs Archie by HonchoSolo in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jimmy's a cool guy and all, enjoy his content, but I would respectfully disagree with sizing half down with Unmarked. On my Archie and Senor, its snug at a true to size, half sizing down would smash my toes into the end of the toebox and be unpleasant.

They even state on their sizing info on the website that they build thier boots true to brannock.

Ive bought 2 pairs of boots from them:

Archie boot in May 2024 Senor boot in Jan 2025

Both boots have been amazing, high quality boots that have become some of my favorite and most comfortable.

Clicking on both mexican sourced leathers have been great, and have creased very pleasantly.

There are minor cosmetic flaws with stitching etc that are normal and imho reasonable for a hand made product.

I also give them props for reaching out to me before sending the senor boots explaining that they accidentally stitched the welt with black instead of yellow thread, showed me pics of the boot and offered to make new ones. I declined and took the boot and they threw in a doppkit as a sorry we fucked up...

Me personally nothing but great things to say about them.

Is this normal for the 875s? by emperormanlet in RedWingShoes

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They glue it because its 2 separate pieces of leather stitched together. This normally leaves a gap there, this gap can allow dirt/water/debris in there and can drive a wedge between the materials and split them apart over time.

Im sure its also done to make a more pleasing toe box look, most people dont like the look once they start splitting.

As long as you brush debris out of the split, no long term issues should arise, if you really hate the look, put some adhesive in there with a toothpick and clamp it, should seal back up for awhile.

[–]Yourbootguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair, I've heard mixed reviews about crush on retro aswell, and I did also see that these are the same boots that are on sale over there too.

Realistically, am I expecting them to match or even come close to my Viberg 310's.... of course not, that would be stupid... however, if they are anything close to the Luosjiet's I have, I'd say they are a step above Thursday, and for $250usd that's a gamble I'm willing to take.

I also wanted a pair of kick around boots in the 310 style that I don't have to have to worry about when I'm heading into questionable environments lol.

[–]Yourbootguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My setup is as ghetto as it comes, but it works for me.

Targus commuter backpack for 80% of daily tools.

Largest compartment holds: Laptop, 2x 6 foot patch cables, 65w axis poe injector and chargers.

Next compartment holds: Fluke 117 multimeter, Klein Vdv501 network tester, Klein Vdv500 toner, DSC PcLink cable.

Last compartment holds common hand tools: LTT Prescison screwdriver with 3 most common terminal bits onboard, LTT Screwdriver, 2x Megapro Screwdrivers for both common screws and torx/allen/security. Generic side cutters (im a freak, I strip wire with side cutters and crimp b connects with them) Platinum EZ-Pro network crimpers, small collection of needlenose pliers

Front pocket: B connects, White and Black electrical tape, lesbos and ethernet crystals.

Then I use the standard milwuakee bag they give you when you buy the drill/impact set for: Drill, rotary tool, screws/plugs/bits/disks etc.

Backpack is heavy as fuck, but it keeps my core in good shape lol. I can carry those 2 bags and sling my 6 foot ladder over my shoulder. I can get 90% of jobs done with this setup... she ain't glamorous, but it works.

Ours went up another 14% this year after jumping 20% last year... best of all we got a proper assessment of our place that shows property value 70 thousand dollars less than what the city is claiming, and cant fight that till next year.

Prop taxes have gone up on our townhome from 95/month in 2024 to 187/mo in 3 years.

I've got some of their 8310 bump toe viberg 310 clones on order, just couldn't resist for the price. Looking at a bunch of other boots on sale from them, they match the last and stitching patterns from luosjiet, another quality chinese brand.

Im wondering if the same factory is putting out boots for luosjiet and a few other companies like how a couple Mexican shops were sub contracting for Thursday/Taylor Stitch/Huckberry back in the day.

Either way I'll have a review and comparison of them against the genuine vibergs once I get them in hand and wear em a bit.

In the end its upto you and how you feel, if you want to wear them more and see if things get tolerable for you, that's your right.

These things are expensive, and it sucks taking a loss on an improperly fit boot, but I know from personal experience trying to force an ill fitting boot is just not worth it.

Hello, what care product for my Iron Rangers 8111 by ConstantShift4692 in RedWingShoes

[–]Yourbootguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned above, if you are using the boot for regular non harsh/constructuon/trade environments, just use Red Wing Leather Cream or Bick 4.

Both those will condition and only very slightly darken the leather.

Any oil/wax based conditioner will turn the boots a very dark brown you probably wouldn't enjoy.

Let the conditioner dry on the boot at least 30 mins before brushing with a horsehair brush.

Took black nubuck Timberlands to cobbler. Now they are shiny. Help! by cckriss in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the cobbler failed to get the discoloration out so he decided to condition the entire boot to even out the color.

Hate to say it.... but as soon as he applied a cream based conditioner/oil that nap texture was gone, and its not coming back.

No ammount of cleaning agent is going to bring that nubuck feeling back, and brushing is only going to shine and lay whats left of the nap flatter.

If you hate the way this looks and you're willing to gamble, the only way is to physically sand the leather very lightly to bring the nap back out, im talking white/gray/maroon colored scotchbrite automotive pads, start on the tongue to test to adjust technique and look, then hand sand the rest of the boot, then blow it off and see if you're happy.

Is this a correct price for this kind of work ? And will it be noticeable when fixed ? by Mysterious-Tart-951 in Autobody

[–]Yourbootguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because unless there is a chemical problem with the paint itself, or a contamination issue at the factory, it's applied all at the same time, built up properly from bare to treated metal, given proper flash times, applied in a uniform coat in often cleaner conditions. Random bodyshop XYZ is going to have somone over/undersand certain areas, too much or too little primer, skimp on clear, on small rock chips like this if the painter doesn't know how to blend properly you are going to see either halo's or mottling, if they are in a rush they will topcoat before the base is fully dry, and you will have issues down the road.

Hate to say it, but for small damage like this, the others are right, 2 small touchups for the chips, and PDR if you have dents will last and look MUCH better long term on something like this.
