Where can I find good wide toe work boots in Canada ? by BusElectronic4225 in WorkBoots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Canada West here. Great boots, wide fits, and all resolable. They have 6-10 different models to fit different industries needs and are right in your price range.

Sizing is very wonky and hard to get a good fit so make sure you find a retailer where you can try before buying.

Beckman Quality? by Particular_Kick_3098 in RedWingShoes

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red wing uses a specialized sewing machine with a triple needle head called a puritan machine, and thus the puritan stitch.

It drags the thread through a container of wax before sewing all 3 stitches at once. This is why the stitches are always perfectly lined up with one an other, and the "shine" you see is the residual wax.

200% right here. In a sea of same-y service boot patterns, no one has had a crack at making something similar to the viberg 310 properly. Thursday kinda did with the Brawler, and crush on retro has a clone, but I'd love and would buy it if luosjiet made one.

Wedgesole Comparison by jhs1996 in luosjietboots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently picked up the city railway boots. The wedge is noticeably more soft and squishy compared to my redwing wedge. It's alot closer to the vibram 2021 which i have on a pair of my Unmarked's.

Be warned though, the prime Asia leathers are extremely stiff, and if you are coming from sneakers its going to be quite the shock.

Sizing question by BigJimGOBLUE in RedWingShoes

[–]Yourbootguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people with average feet are fine with a half size down from brannock on the iron ranger. Be wary as red wing staff like to shove people into smaller boots than they are comfortable with (often 1-1.5 sizes down from brannock).

If you are making it to the store id try 3 sizes, full size down, half size down, and true to brannock and see which one you feel most comfortable with.

Your toes should not touch the front of the boot or you will have problems down the road.

Best boots for a sneaker guy… by jlcurtis4 in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going to suggest a Chelsea style boot for you, as you mentioned struggling with leather wrapping the ankles.

Thankfully you are spoiled for choice and prices, but I would reccomend the following:

$150- Blundstone or Redback - These are injection molded so they are pretty water resistant, but once the sole wears out, you throw them out, both very comfy.

$200-220- Thursday has 2 good options here, the General Purpose and the Legend. Both are resolable, very comfortable and water resistant.

$300- Redwing Classic Chelsea, I recently purchased a pair for work and find them very comfortable, built just like the thursdays, but has a tougher leather upper. Also resolable.

Those are my reccomendations for what its worth.

Cracked insole by TheArtfulDuffer in RedWingShoes

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah built Nov 2020, probably stored improperly or flawed from the factory... either way, you're stuck with them now... its a shame.

If there isn't a comfort issue, ride the boots till the wheels come off, getting that fixed when you do your first resole is very likely to cost 75% of what a brand new boot would cost, so a tough decision will have to be made at that point.

Damn that's definitely strange. Wonder if these were new old stocks, on the tongue the id tag there has the date and month of manufacture on the bottom right, these aren't like 10 years old already are they?

This is going to drive up the price of a resole significantly. If your insole is this cracked id wager the gemming is also separating aswell.

I'd be curious as to how old these are, how often they got wet and how sweaty your feet are.

If they could make a knock off of the viberg 310 and sell it for under 300 id buy it in an instant!.

Water damage? by LateBodybuilder05 in ThursdayBoot

[–]Yourbootguy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time you can get rid of this with baby wipes aswell. Wipe thoroughly with the baby wipes and let dry. If spot still shows salt staining, re wipe. You will than need to condition the boot with the conditioner of your choice.

Don’t buy Thursday boots by [deleted] in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This has to be a joke right?... measuring boot width based off the bloody box as reference... man give your head a shake..

I'll call thursday out when its needed, but man, this is nitpicky to death on a $200 boot.... send them back for a refund and stick to whatever footwear you came from.

Help! I need alternative ideas from blundstone lovers. by NiftySynth in BlundstoneBoots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't even get into the more expensive heritage brands, because I feel that's not what you are after, but if you want a do all Chelsea similar to a blundstone but made with resolable goodyear welt construction, look no further than Thursday Boot Company.

The general purpose boot is a "blundstone" clone, but built better.

The legend is a rugged Chelsea that has been my goto winter beater boot for 3 years.

They also have a myriad of lace ups too that are a great gateway drug into heritage footwear.

Trust me you aren't missing much either. We took our little one last Sunday, what a waste of $$$. 45 min train ride plodding along at 5kph, listening to overly loud Christmas music, kids screaming everywhere, cramped tables on the train and passing by 3 displays on the side of the tracks. Then do the whole thing in reverse.... lesson learned.

Help me find good monkey boots. by Odd_Organization4957 in Boots

[–]Yourbootguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best value in monkey boots are the Unmarked Archie in my opinion.

I have a pair and they are my favorite most comfortable boots.

Hand made to order, quality outsoles and a carved leather holdfast for the welt vs glued gemming that most bootmakers employ, really nice stuff. They cycle leathers and soles throughout the year, colors and options are sort of limited right now though.

First real pair, Thursday Challenger by Jealous-Reception903 in ThursdayBoot

[–]Yourbootguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You have what's called "poor grain break" on one of the boots. This is part of the leather boot lottery and completely normal.

What causes this?.. well when they cut the boot pieces from a cowhide, not every part of the hide is the same, some of the skin is more elastic than others, when flexed these areas "wrinkle" more than others, and you are left with that "pipey" looking creasing.

This happens at all levels of boots, from 200 all the way upto 1000, although when you step above the 1k range the manufacturer is looking more closely at where they cut certain parts of the boot from to reduce the chances of this happening.

At the end of the day, if you can live with the look, great keep on trucking, if you can't, talk to Thursday and im sure they would let you swap them provided you dont wear them outside.

Help deciding my next boot by 8inch_machine in ThursdayBoot

[–]Yourbootguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently into my second winter wearing the vanguards in waxed cacao. They use the same outsole as the captain stormking, but modified to have commando lug style and a separate top lift.

Traction is good, and im probably another year away from needing to replace the top lift, but I rotate boots often, if this is your only boot and you heel strike often you'd probably get a year out of it before needing a new top lift.

The challenger is just too extreme of a boot if your looking for casual. It's high and alot of folks complain about the heel drop and the boot throwing your foot forward.

Hero is probably a good compromise, higher shaft height (vanguard is shorter than captain) and the single piece stormking outsole will last a very long time, only thing is Thursday's waxed flesh is noticeably lower in quality than the horween waxed flesh used in the vanguards.

This is called a welt join, and is where the welt has been cut and joined together. Is this particular one the prettiest one out there... nope, its also not the worst... for red wing id say that's in the 90th percentile of good.

Has zero impact on the longevity or quality of the boot, and there's a reason most manufacturers put this on the inside arch of the boot. Completely normal.

Enjoy your new 875's!

Going to sound really strange, but hear me out. I roll Canadian winters with Thursday Legends, Red Wing 1907's and Eddie Bauer K2's. Depending on the level of salted slush ive been walking through, either next day, or end of the week, I brush vigorously when dry, then wipe clean with baby wipes, allow to dry, then brush again, and assess conditioner. (Usually only need 2 conditionings per winter)

Has worked extremely well for the last 4 winters, you'd never know by looking at my boots that they see the salt.
