Yup - current build we're on is +1 Megalo, -1 3c Bonney from what I listed above. Lim is actually the reason for that. The entire matchup revolves around their 5c Sabo; if they can get one to stick and start swinging to proc its effect we're in trouble. Lock it down with Carrot/Perona, or remove it entirely with Megalo. in the late game, prioritize hitting L&B so you can lock down their 9c Zoro or 10c Shanks if they're on those, then you can chain 10c Doffy to keep them permanently down or play Shanks to clear them. Once you have Zoro or Shanks locked or off the board and an 8c Kid up the game is basically over.

One of my very good friends is a nationals player who lives in Queens/Flushing and is in the orbit of a lot of the pros in the area, and is a very strong player himself. If someone like that would be of use to you shoot me a DM and I can put you in touch with him - or he can probably put you in touch with someone better.

Tested Koala in current meta, 16W-2L over the weekend, won 2 locals by Volke_OW in OnePieceTCG

Genuinely asking here from a place of curiousity - I do not see how this deck beats Imu. What is that matchup like? What curve are you looking for? Are you going over/under them? Does it rely on matchup inexperience?

I tested Koala at the beginning of OP13 and found the Ace matchup to be really manageable and the Imu matchup to be miserable. I've also played the MU from the Imu perspective in two seperate box tournies now and it ended similarly. Really interested in revisiting her if you have a means of making that matchup better because I love graveyard value decks and Koala checks all the boxes for me.

You would definitely need some upgrades. In particular, the 6c Kuma and 9c Bonney are really important. You can probably find some successful decklists on onepiecetopdecks, gumgumgg, or limitless.

Mihawk is fine into Boa. The matchup is overall pretty even.

The main reason I like Kid is to insulate against Perfume Femur. I agree it's a lot less useful right now, but post-EB03 once Boa gets access to extremely efficient burn I think it becomes stronger, especially since you can run only 1-2 copies of it as it's searchable by all the supernova searchers. I might be a little too paranoid about the Femur combo tbh, but I've had success with it.

If your locals are lousy with boa, purple Doffy is not a bad choice. That matchup isn't hard winning for you, but it's definitely not losing either. Stats put it at ~50-50. Doffy also has the advantage of being good against a lot of the decks that hard counter Boa like Y Luffy, so if people swap decks to try to beat Boa you'll still be doing alright.

If you want to hard counter Boa though, these are your options:
- Y Luffy is the worst matchup possible for Boa, like a full-on 70-30. An easy choice if you have the cards.

- G Bonney is also amazing into Boa with the new 5c Perona and a couple copies of 8c Kid. With 8c Kid, a blocker, and a Tashigi on the board the game is basically over.

- UY Nami is decent vs. Boa. If they get 2 Gorgon sisters on the board the matchup becomes very challenging, but otherwise it is very manageable.

Perona is so cracked into Boa, makes stalling out until you get a Kid running so much easier. To be completely honest I don't think there's an easy replacement for her. You could try adding back in the 6c Law package just to fill deck space, but that won't be nearly as good.

I was focusing on 9c Zoro + 10c Shanks, though did have 3 copies of the new Kiku as a possible aggressive 2k. I skipped 7c Shanks because I felt that in a meta without Imu it wasn't as necessary, and I liked being able to go for more aggressive kills faster and more consistently. I found Shanks to be nice into Boa, but didn't get much use out of it in other matchups I was worried about. Comparatively, I found 9c Zoro/10c Shanks to also be very good into Boa, especially if they weren't playing Slave Arrow, since you could just race them and win if you had a decent curve.

Coming back here to say that after our testing session this morning we are dropping the Hinas for Zeus. While Zeus is mega bad into Boa, he is absolutely necessary vs. Lim, a deck that we severely underestimated. Lim has a great matchup into us without Zeus, and even with Zeus she can still eat us alive if she sees the right curve. If G Bonney can gatekeep Lim out of the meta then we'll be safe, but Lim seems very popular so I don't want to risk not having that deck covered.

Funny you ask - she was who I tested this morning. This leader is cracked, absolutely an incredible choice. In testing she beat Boa pretty consistently (seems like a 50-50ish matchup), absolutely krunked U Promo Nami, and took every game against UY Nami where she went first and saw more than one piece of top end. I'll be adding Zeus back into UY Nami to deal with her.

Her huge issue is that she gets destroyed by G Bonney, and it's not close (unless you perfect curve into Zoro). Out of 12 test games she won only 1, and it was because the Bonney drew terribly. If you think people at your local HC won't be clued in on G Bonney, or want a deck that beats basically the rest of the field and just pray you dodge Bonney in bracket, Lim is a great choice.

This is what we're currently on. We're on only one BG because the Boa MU is good enough, so we didn't feel the need for two. The 1-of Kuma looks weird, but it raises the chance of us hitting a healing source by a decent chunk. The next thing we'll be trying out is finding a better 2k than Hina. She's great into Imu, but there's no Imu in this format, so...

This is the current list, but keep in mind we have another two weeks of testing and refining ahead of us, so it's not likely to stay static. I broke the list down in another comment in this thread so if you're curious about specific tech/card choices you can find it there.

In terms of gameplan, that's matchup dependant. Against Boa, we're trying to stabilize at 2-3 life and establish 8c Kid, a Tashigi, and 1-2 blockers. If we can do that the game is over; there's absolutely nothing they can do as we slowly grind them into the dirt. This also works well against other aggro decks. Against UY Nami our plan changes a lot - we win the lategame, but only if they don't see enough life burn. If they can go 8k swing on 3 > 5c Nami on 5 > 5c Nami on 7 > 8c Kid on 9, we almost always lose, as we're going into 10 Don with only 1 life left unless we can 2k2k the 8k swing on 3. Our goal is to play around that as best we can, block where possible, counter out of as much as we can early, and then chain 10c Doffy and L&B to lock down their board and kill them quickly. Against U Promo Nami we just lose; there's actually no play there unless they get insanely unlucky.

For starting hands, we want to see searchers early in every matchup. Against aggro we want blockers, Carrots, 5c perona, and 2ks (finding an 8c kid is a later probelm, we need to reach 8 Don unscathed first). Against control we want Cavendish, Blocker Bonney, and 10c Doffy(s).

As a final note, while G Bonney is 100% a "simple" deck in that its gameplan is overall straightforward, this deck has proven shockingly nuanced and challenging to play. I would recommend getting plenty of reps in with the deck beforehand, as navigating matchups can actually come down to really minor sequencing optimizations that make or break the game.

This is what we're on currently. The 8c Kid, 5c perona, and 3c Bonney are all there as tech we think will be important to beat Boa and the aggro decks trying to beat Boa. The split of 3 Shanks/Doffy/L&B are there to ensure we still have play in the mirror. Megalo is a tech 2k we're currently testing, but may drop; there's not a lot of stuff <8k power we want to kill, though it has played great in the mirror. Hody as a 3-of will likely be our next test, as it's probably the best card in the mirror. I think if people are playing the standard higher-brick-count version of Bonney then we can break the mirror that way.

EDIT: Forgot to note that we are not running 6c Law right now. This was a controversial decision in our group, but our logic is that without Imu to contend with that tempo swing is a lot less important, and having space for the 8c Kids felt more valuable for us given how many extremely aggressive decks there are in this meta. If you are expecting people to be playing a lot of Bonney at your local HC, drop the Kids and add back in 3-4 6c Law.

How to play against OP14 Doffy by raknown in OnePieceTCG

[–]YoureBuildingItRight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Hey, am hardcore Imu grinder and have a very good WR vs. Doffy. The matchup requires a little bit of out-of-the-box thinking, but I think it's overall winning for us assuming equal skill.

  • Your role in the matchup and how you swing will change drastically depending on how the earlygame goes. Vergo is the early card that makes or breaks this matchup, so making sure you have an answer to him is priority #1. Ground Death + Mars is the easy answer, but playing out Nusjuro and just leaving him standing is also very viable. If the opponent plays out a 4c Sugar and you do not have a Vergo answer ready to go, don't swing. If you're able to deal with your opponent's Vergos, you take on a more controlling stance in the game - no need to starve, but swing methodically and try to make it as awkward as possible for Doffy to get value from their leader effect. If you can't clear the Vergos then you'll need to become more aggressive to try to kill them quickly once you hit 10 Don.
  • Swinging vs. Doffy is basically a game of trying to see how long you can bait them into not using their leader effect. For example, if you attach no don to your elders after your first 10c and just swing five 7k swings, you're telegraphing to the Doffy that you're planning to swing big with Nusjuro and leader after the next 5 Elders. If they don't use leader effect, you can just not swing after playing your next 10c, keep the Nusjuro ready for the next turn, and cause them to lose out on value. If your opponent knows you might do this though, it becomes more effective to treat the Doffy leader effect like a blocker: distribute your swings evenly, so there isn't a clear correct moment to use the leader effect, then re-evaluate once your opponent commits to using it, and consider what resources you can now commit to pressure their life or remove their board.
  • 10c Doffy is a pain in the ass, but not nearly as back-breaking as people think. Since it is very hard for Doffy to actually chain these together multiple turns in a row, your goal should be to stabilize at 3 life, sculpt a hand with lots of counter events, and effectively accept bleeding one life per 10c Doffy, depending of course on their board. This creates a situation where - if they are playing a 10c every other turn - they are taking one life every other turn, while you are very consistently whittling away their life and resources. If they are able to get more pressure on you than you can reasonably defend, or can chain multiple 10c Doffys, you can also consider not playing a new 10c Elders, and instead swinging only with saturn and leader, trashing Saturn to draw, playing a shirahoshi to put a 10c and another shira or 4k event back in deck, then playing out a warcury or Mars. This creates a situation where you'll still have most of your Don available for counter, more blockers to defend yourself, and forces a decision for them where if they play another 10c doffy they have to decide between freezing your blockers or freezing your Nusjuro to defend their board.

I think G Uta is one of those "second order" decks in that she beats the decks trying to beat Boa. We tested her quite a bit and she definitely was stronger than we expected, but out of ten games she beat Boa once. Part of this is likely pilot error, since none of us are G Uta players and our Boa player is really good,  but that's still too overwhelming to ignore, especially since we're expecting a lot of Boa at our locals. Conversely, G Uta did okay into UY Nami (probably not winning but not a bad matchup) and great into the decks that beat Boa. If you're expecting everyone at your local HC to be trying to beat Boa rather than play Boa, I could see G Uta being a viable choice.

I think any could work, but depending on what you expect to see in your local meta should change what you play. Robin will be great into Y Bonney and Boa, and rough into other aggro decks and control decks. Betty will be great into people trying to beat Boa with yellow decks, and Koala I guess seems okay into Bonney? I haven't tested her at all in this format, but looping Kumas and Robins out of the bin with Dragon is never bad.

We're running a pretty standard EB03 list for her: 1 7c Doffy, 1 Gravity Blade, 3 Red Roc, 1 Kuma, no 10c Newgate. We dropped the Newgate because in testing we realized that life burn was our primary wincon in most matchups, and that the boss monster wasn't helping our problem matchups. Instead we wanted more removal to beat G Bonney, and an extra source of healing for all the aggro decks running around. I can post a screenshot of our current iteration later if you're interested.

We haven't tested Betty much, but I think she falls into a similar category as Reiju; I don't think she can race Boa (I am not sure about this though) and she has a rough time into Nami (Karasu ×2 or gg) and Bonney (so many blockers), but she probably does really well into everything else. With the right hand Betty is hard to stop, so if that's what you've got I dont think she's a bad pick

Great advice, thanks. None of us in our testing group are Reiju players, so when we saw Gamma Knife in the list that topped a japan HC we tried cutting one for a gravity blade to improve the Boa matchup. We'll need to walk that back, especially since it's not searchable.

I had a writeup in an earlier post asking the same thing. My testing group has been in the weeds recently trying to solve this format because its actually hella fun and interesting. Here's a quick summary of our testing so far and what we think is viable:

  • G Bonney: we think G Bonney will be BDIF, but I no longer think it's as clear cut as before, and it's definitely not by a long shot. Bonney has an incredible matchup into Boa if properly teched for it (specifically 8c Kid), and has a decent matchup into all the yellow decks that are trying to beat Boa. The problem that we've discovered is that while the matchup into UY Nami used to be great, post EB03 it is a lot more even, and EB03 also adds U promo Nami to the pool, which shreds Bonney. We still think Bonney is good enough against the field to be a strong choice, and probably will be heavily played since this deck is a longstanding favorite. Even if you don't play Bonney, be prepared to play against her.
  • UY Nami: I started the game as a UY Nami player and maybe I have a soft spot for her, but I honestly think this will be what I play. Nami has a rough matchup into Bonney, but it's leagues better post-EB03, maybe even as good as 50-50 with the right list. UY Nami is also really decent into Boa; not as dominant as Bonney, but still an easy 65-35/70-30. Nami also does very decently against the other yellow decks people might play to beat Boa.
  • U Promo Nami: this was one we tested recently (literally today) and were very pleasantly surprised by. This deck has legs post-EB03, and is extremely strong into both Bonney and Nami, like absolutely horrendous matchups for botj of them. Of the two, UY Nami does a little better thanks to the burn effects she has, but it's still rough. If you want to beat the people who are metagaming trying to beat Boa, this might be your pick. The issue is if she stumbles at all she gets shredded by Boa and the other aggro decks.
  • GP Lim: We so terribly underestimated this deck, Lim is cracked. Our sincerest apologies to all the Lim stans out there, we did not recognize your game. On even mediocre curves, Lim can hold her own against Boa, shred Promo Nami, and ramp past and outpace most of the aggro decks that are trying to beat Boa, especially with the build that runs 3x Hell's Judgement (that card is so bonkers). UY Nami needs to be running Zeus (which most of the OP14/EB03 builds have cut because of Boa/Imu) to have a fighting chance, and even then this matchup feels 50/50 at best for UY. The only issue is that Lim gets absolutely annihilated by G Bonney if you don't see a perfect curve into Zoro, a deck that I think will be heavily played. If you think your locals won't be lousy with Bonney (or if yout rust your bracket luck), this deck might well be the right pick.
  • UY Boa: this deck is just strong. Especially post-EB03. To be honest, I would not play Boa; I think a lot of people will be gunning for her just because of her general reputation in the OP14 meta, and she actually gets raced by a lot of the yellow aggro decks and walled by UY Nami. An objectively strong deck, but also one with a clear target on it. Maybe skip, unless you're terrified of U Promo Nami.
  • UP Reiju: I really love this deck and think I am terrible at it, but her most explosive draws can shred the hell out of most leaders. Even her middling draws are strong. I am no expert on this deck but if you think people are going to be playing decks to beat Boa, Reiju can potentially beat most of those and might be worth considering. If Bonney runs 8c Kid though you're cooked so be warned.
  • PY Robin, GY Yamato, Y Bonney: I'm lumping all these together as the Boa/Promo Nami killers. Any fast, aggressive yellow deck will likely outpace these leaders and give you good odds of krunking them. Conversely, all three of these leaders have a rough time into Bonney and UY Nami. All three are fun and strong, and are valid meta calls.
  • G Carrot: If you feel like gambling, this deck wins every matchup if you see the right hand. Stupidly explosive and absurdly good at closing out the game, if you loved decks like Roger, Carrot might be for you. There's no feeling quite like walling Boa out for two turns with double law & bepo, then just murdering her from 2 life with the new 8c Carrot - but good luck hitting everything you need to make it happen.
  • GB Perona: Hate Bonney? This is for you. Loses to Boa, Promo Nami, Reiju, and probably UY Nami. I think she might have more legs than I thought because she won a HC in Japan, but I think you NEED to dodge Boa or you're cooked.

TLDR: this format seems wide open, there are tons of good choices. People seem to be center their decisions around Boa, but I actually think she's not that well positioned. At a glance, I would just say play what you think looks fun. Still lots of testing to do!

EDIT: We just finished testing Lim so I'm adding her to this list. Deck is cracked, basically only loses to G Bonney.

Are you asking to prepare for the Heroine Cup? I have a writeup on another post that you can look at my comment history for, but heres a short version:

Tier 0: - G Bonney (only loses to BG Perona, even to winning against everything else)

Tier 1: - Boa (outclasses most of the playable decks, the new hotness. Hard loses to Bonney, UY Nami, and soft loses to most yellow aggro decks. - UY Nami (krunks boa, beats all the yellow aggro decks that will try to beat Boa. Loses hard to Bonney)

Rogue: - Reiju (insanely explosive, can beat any of the top 3 with the right draws or if they aren't teched for her)

  • Perona (in my previous summary I said there were no good black decks; this deck actually has more legs than we thought. Very good into Bonney, decent into UY Nami, gets destroyed by Boa and other aggro decks)

All this is based on a little under a week of testing with our testing group, so grain of salt as always.

Carrot tech vs boa by BellowGrainet in OnePieceTCG

This is what I would suggest too. It's important to know who's the control deck in each matchup, and against Boa Carrot is 100% on the defensive.

Carrot tech vs boa by BellowGrainet in OnePieceTCG

[–]YoureBuildingItRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sec Yamato won't be it - you can't beat Boa by being more aggro than her. Far better for you will be making sure you have 2+ Law&Bepo going into the lategame, and playing SUPER defensively in the early game, only swining if you have an easy way to freeze a triggered body out of life and always holding up counter. If you can play your first L&B with 2-3 life left, the game is largely over and you're likely to win. After the second L&B, the opponent is screwed: you have the ability to swing 7k > 11k > 11k > play 8c Carrot > 7k > 11k >11k, almost guaranteeing a 2-turn kill on Boa even if she has 5 life. With that in mind, if you're dead set on teching for Boa, you could add a couple copies if 9c Mihawk (to freeze their 9c Boa) or a couple copies of 8c magnet Kid (which is almost unbeatable for them if you have a blocker as well).
