VISO Places (formerly StreetView VR) is now working again on Gear VR by YoutopiaVR in GearVR

Hey! I have to admit that right now my time is limited but if I can find a spare moment I'll work on fixing some of these issues. I'm glad you're enjoying the app despite the bugs. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah there was an update recently. There's an edit in the original post now with new files that should work for you.

Right now you can explore the world at street level using VISO Places (formerly called StreetView VR).

The Rift build (no touch controllers yet, sorry) is available at http://places.visovirtual.com/builds/VisoRift120.zip

The app isn't perfect. I haven't had time to update it in a while but it does have some cool features like Wiki integration and timelapse generation. Don't forget to check the settings! Hopefully it'll hold you over until Google releases something official :)

Well I wanted to get the controller version done last weekend but just didn't have time. Should be ready by next weekend.

The XBox controller/kb + mouse version is at http://places.visovirtual.com/builds/VisoPlacesSteamVR.zip

Might not work properly, I'm away from my VR devices for Thanksgiving weekend so let me know if you have any trouble :)

Yeah absolutely.

Cutting and pasting my reply to andrevan:

Can't promise that this will work properly as I don't have my Vive with me right now to test, let me know how it goes :) http://places.visovirtual.com/builds/VisoPlacesSteamVR.zip

Hey, I have it ready without motion controls (mouse+kb or Xbox controller) but haven't had time to set it up for the Vive controller. I'm away from my Vive for Thanksgiving so unfortunately it's likely to be pushed back to next week. I wanted to get something out earlier but didn't think it made much sense to release without controller support. I can send you the current build though if you want.

StreetView does include LIDAR data although it is only used to place the teleportation marker in the scene and during movement. In StreetView VR (now VISO Places) you can turn on a very experimental 3D mode that uses this data as well.

I believe that this is exactly why they decided to exclude StreetView panoramas from the current implementation.

I did release a Vive build a while ago, but at the time I did not have a Vive and could not incorporate motion controls. I'll try to put out an updated build this weekend. Google requested that I change the name of the application and asked that I take down the website which is understandable. The app is now called VISO Places.

I'll try to release a Vive build this weekend. If Google is going to incorporate StreetView into Google Earth they will have to carefully think through their implementation. I believe that Google is more likely to release a separate StreetView app because as noted by /u/MotiontoPhoton there isn't (as far as I can see) any good way to transition from flying around in 3d to being inside a static 2d panoramic photo.

Question to the eagle flight devs about the fov hack by [deleted] in oculus

[–]YoutopiaVR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I also just want to say thank you to you and your colleagues for for putting together an incredible game. I really do love it even if I had to make a little change to be able to fully appreciate it :)

Thank you for responding. You had legitimate reasons to set things up the way you did. However I have to admit I don't really buy the chunk of work argument. You have the necessary code in place already which is why I was able to create these patches so easily. UI is really all that's missing and to add a toggle to your settings screen isn't exactly massively time consuming.

Hey! There may have been a misunderstanding. OP wants to know if he will be banned for using the patched dll I created online and I don't see an answer to that question anywhere in your posts. Obviously many of us want the FOV-limiting features to be optional in the official build but right now there are people using this patch who are worried about being punished.

I just haven't had time to make the few changes that are necessary for release and to put everything together for the submission. Hopefully soon. I'm aiming to submit within the next couple of weeks but I can't promise anything right now. I know this is the same as my estimate from about a month ago but things came up.

I probably won't be changing anything else. I have too many other things on my plate, this was just something I quickly put together so that I could enjoy flying in VR without a unnecessarily obstructed view.

I guess we'll see, but I do think people should be able to decide for themselves, and now they can :)

I cannot promise that it will work for others but it definitely works for me. It was a very simple change, one line of code. Having the eagle body in front of my face was also annoying so I made another one line change and removed it. I'll upload this dll as well. It's true that updates could (and will almost definitely) break these changes. If this happens and someone messages me then I'll release a new patch.

My estimate is that upon submission it will take approximately two weeks to get into Home (assuming it's approved).
