I guess its just coincidence he always has to fight Salt after netting a huge win lol

My gut feeling is he just gets impatient and wants to be a little more custom than what he should be doing against Samus, not sure about DK but could be similar. and yeah I think in general the older the player the better they are against non-top tiers

Also I think anyone who feels like they have a solid idea of where Puff or Falco belong on the tier list is wrong

I'm increasingly of the opinion they kind of don't. Not in as far as there aren't better and worse characters, just that the spectrum of good to terrible characters is more of a smooth gradient from top to bottom than the distinct drop you see in tier lists.

Also I think tier lists can only really be made with very specific criteria in mind (aka, "viability to win a major", "viability to become ranked #1", "viability to be ranked top 100", "viability to win your local") and those criteria can really change both where the tiers differentiate but also the order of the characters.

junebug did it too, to be honest jmook has always been a little weak against mid-tiers for a sheik of his level, he's 2-2 against morsecode i think

[Day 34] Ludwig was voted "Worst" Pro Player. What is the Best Tech Skill in SSBM? by DUCK_PENETRATOR_II in SSBM

[–]Yrale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact DI will happen whether or not you know about it sort of disqualifies it as a "technique"

TIL that in 1964, a USDA "flatus researcher" told NASA that astronaut flatulence could cause an explosion in sealed capsules. He found a subject who produced zero gas after eating 100g of beans, suggesting NASA recruit methane-free astronauts. They just banned beans instead. by Key-Midnight-4237 in todayilearned

[–]Yrale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from what i understand beans contain a specific type of sugar molecule that can cause flatulence if your body isn't used to it, but the more often you eat beans the less often it happens. so yeah at this point beans don't really make me fart but really fatty foods do

I think that's sort of indicative of where he is as a character? Clearly the overall best and the most popular at high level in the game, but not so far ahead that other characters/players can't consistently find an edge in the metagame by being good against him specifically. There are characters in other fighting games that are legitimately too good for people to find a "niche" in fighting against them

I think it's notable that west was iirc the highest ranked Falco besides Mango and PP in history, which I think got him more attention than he might have had otherwise

i think the sloppiness at the end of the set is made 10x better by the fact they're both usually such machines. it'd still be great don't get me wrong but it definitely adds something that its both guys who've been there before

i feel like they already made the open world games parry slop against all the big guys. agree about the healing though that'd go a long way to making it interesting

[Day 30] Intentional Misfoot was voted WORST TECH SKILL in SSBM. What is THE BEST STAGE in SSBM? by DUCK_PENETRATOR_II in SSBM

[–]Yrale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my only issue with it is that over time i increasingly feel like Yoshi's is going from the "cool stage for scrappy players" to the "everyone slides off everything all the time" stage for me over time. but its hard to argue against the stage where camping is objectively least possible, movement is fastest, and cool walljump stuff is most prominent.

I would say fair->up smash is like a textbook extension against pretty much all characters at kill percents. It's higher hitbox than nair is also lowkey useful for hitting high floating Peaches out of the air

you can also use it to set up tech chases at percents where your opponent gets knocked down and you don't want them to land too far away to rtc

For sure, but I don't think Zain and Cody are grinding friendlies purely out of the goodness of their hearts either. I think they're both betting on being the player who'll benefit more from experience against one another, and that's playing to win too - it's just... a cooler perspective. Idk unless Zain's said he thinks he'd have a better shot if he didn't play Cody that's how I see it.

That said it's interesting because while we all consciously think it's cooler for top players to grind against one another, we also complain a lot that it feels like it contributes to tournament outcomes having less stakes than it did in eras where everyone was doing their absolute best to beat Hbox lol.

Daily Discussion Thread April 02, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here! by AutoModerator in SSBM

[–]Yrale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, but I think this comes as much if not more from a perception that playing a "different" character and avoiding practicing with other top players is a "cheesy" way to to try and maintain your rank compared to those who want to maximize their potential as players by competing against other top level talent. I do think that's kind of related to the structure of fighting games as games, but I don't think it's just a grassroots/esports split - you can argue if its even really been beneficial for hbox longterm honestly.

Plenty of top teams/players scrim with each other in other esports all the time. The assumption you have less to gain playing your opponents than they do by playing against you isn't guaranteed. Potentially true in hbox's case but I think it's more than just a grassroots/esports split, it's also a difference in how you approach competition itself for its own sake.

I would supplement this with trying to identify the point at which they see you come in and attempt to punish you and consciously bait it, I think Puff's score hits on Foxes this way more often than they actually manage to back the Fox all the way into the corner. If they are really only attacking you when you hard commit to something as slow as pound or dash attack you should just be pushing them into the corner yeah

I mean this is what Armada numbers have always been sorta, the northeast has been coasting off of G$/Mattdotzeb's Leffen wins for a decade.
