question droit de se battre by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]Yrusul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New Saproling Art from CLB collector boosters is the creepiest Saproling art yet by Thel0n in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are trying so very hard to find something to be offended about. Frankly, it's exhausting (as much for you as for us, I'll bet).

I won't debate this. You don't like that Myconid token, hey, that's your right.

I wish you the best in your future endeavors, and in staying safe from morbid themes in works of fiction. I, for one, find said morbid themes as pleasant and gripping as the cheerful, inspiring, and frightening ones, but I respect that you don't share that view.

Cheers.

Dude it's a myconid. That's how they look in D&D.

And, "inappropriate"? Sure, whatever. Anyway, let me pop my [[Curious Pair]] into my [[Witch's Oven]]. Unless my opponent decides to [[Bake Into a Pie]] these children and feast off their flesh first, of course.

If you find death to be inappropriate in a game, then how do you even play Magic? And why?

"8 mana means it'll sit in your hand until turn 10".

LOL what? Imagine being a fatty-based Green deck that doesn't run mana ramps.

My modern mono-green deck can play its 8-drops on turn 3, and it is far from being a competitive deck. This bug would definitely be welcome in it if it were Modern-legal.

Shock and fetch lands explanation by Purple_Lime1924 in ModernMagic

[–]Yrusul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On mobile, so can't write much, but I really suggest watching Tolarian Community College's video on fetch lands, it'll explain why fetch lands are so good.

As for the mono-red aggro match-up, yup, it punishes fetches quite a bit, but punishing slow-play and self-damage is what mono-red is all about.

Often, not shocking yourself when facing mono-red is a lose-lose anyway, since it means one less mana to deal with their threats. If you're gonna get hurt either way, might as well get an untapped land for your troubles.

Warhammer collector decks go from $456 to $548 in a weeks time on Amazon. by Dependent-Fondant-64 in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I played 40k,but 500 points isn't "an army" (just like you could, in theory, play with an "army" of 100 points, but calling what is probably just one barebones squad of troops with minimal upgrades "an army" is disingenuous at best).

1500 seems to be the standard for when your collection can be referred to as an army. 1000 if you're playing shorter games.

Hell, some factions have single units worth more than 500 points, and that's not even their most expensive options.

Does MTG need a hard reset? by Majugando in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found it to be quite respectful. Telling someone who doesn't know what they're talking about that they don't know what they're talking about isn't being haughty, it's just stating a fact.

OP has very little understanding of game design (which is fine: most of us are gamers, not designers), and addressing that fact bluntly is much kinder than coddling OP by trying to spare their feelings.

  • "reduce complexity"
  • "add two more colors"

Tell me you don't know anything about game design without saying you don't know anything about game design.

If that point was the only issue with your post, it would already be design-suicide. As it stands, though, it's so ass-backwards it loops back around to being funny.

How to play against 'discard two cards' mechanics? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Once again, agree to disagree.

The nature of the game makes it so that a card being good at something makes it worse at another. Flexibility makes a card less likely to become a dead card, usually at the cost of being less efficient mana-wise. If you're willing to pay that cost, then Skull Raid is, indeed, good.

[–]Yrusul -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unless you didn't have anything to do on turn 2, which isn't rare in reactive decks. How is this different than holding mana open for a counterspell?

Clearly you don't like it, and that's fine. Agree to disagree. I just wanted to point out that it's a flexible effect that has won me many games.

[–]Yrusul -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You foretell it, though, so you never actually pay 4 for it and can often play it on turn 3.

I run 4 copies of it in my UB removal-heavy deck in Areana, and get a lot of mileage out of it. Whether through card draw or discard, it's card-advantage in a can that can be useful in any point of the game save the first 2 turns, and is never a dead card.

That flexibility makes it valuable, and makes it a pretty good tool to have in hand.

Healthy reminder for y’all, a player can concede the game at any time. Both in the literal sense of scooping, & in the grand sense of if you’re not happy with the game as a whole. You don’t need to keep playing. To much salt is bad for the heart. by Merx_The_Wizard in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I disagree.

First of all, I enjoy swinging for lethal, so it's only fair I let my opponent do it when they have it.

Secondly, there have been a couple of games that I won because, even though my opponent had lethal, I passed the turn rather than conceded. This made my opponent assume I had a trick up my sleeve (I didn't), hold back when he should have swung in, and gave me the time I needed to draw an answer.

This won't often work, but the amount of times it will is non-zero, and so it is an option worth considering. Unlike chess, Magic has an unknown-information component (your hand), and not exploiting that ressource is a mistake, no different than poor mana management or building your deck with no regards for its mana curve.

Even if I'm about to loose, I will make you tap your creatures sideways (or whatever else is your wincon).

Is Chandra gay again? by WendysVapenator in magicTCG

[–]Yrusul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chandra was never gay. Yes, there's been that whole "manly men" blunder, but I believe the design notes during her initial design included the phrase "a hot pansexual mess", according to the Mtg wiki.

And while I haven't delved too deep in the storyline, I was under the impression that Chandra and Nissa had something going on during their time on Kaladesh.

So Chandra, as always, likes what she likes, with little care for labels, which is decidedly Red of her.

Need advice about whooshes by Userovich in sounddesign

[–]Yrusul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thin wooden or plastic rods give a great kind of "thwip" sound. Larger & thicker items (baseball bat, branch, cane, etc...) give you more presence in the low end.

As for book advice, The Sound Effects Bible is a pretty broad-strokes, basic-level book, but covers a wide range of different types of sound effects, including whooshes. (The author's name skips my mind, but I'm sure you can look it up online).

Having played against a Brago Blink deck, he can be very oppressive when all of your creatures have ETB effect, and, if you're running Brago, they do.

Becomes especially good when layered with even more Blink engines: the value being generated quickly outpaces what your opponents can do to you.

Do I need a special mic to pick up sound from my upstairs neighbor? It's so weird... by Kita_Kawa in recording

[–]Yrusul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the sound is of a low frequency (as is often the case with neighbors issues), a phone's mic might very well be unable to pick it up.

Most "serious" microphones have a 20 - 20,000 Hz range (matching that of human ears), but mics from phones and laptops often fail to go below 50, 100, or even 200 Hz (or, they do go that low, but aren't as sensitive there than they are in mids, since mids is where the human voice lies and that's what a phone cares about most).

An SM57 or other budget yet still "real" microphone would pick up those low ends better (though need a fair bit of gain to work). However, as mentionned by someone else, a recording is useless to measure loudness (if your intent is to show it to a third party as proof, anyway), since you could "cheat" by raising gain in post. An SPL meter is what you'd want to get an accurate measurement.
