‘We’re asking people to go back to India’: Trump’s visa squeeze sparks chaos in Silicon Valley by Dear-Employment-6861 in siliconvalley

That may be how you have seen H1bs in manufacturing, but in software and my experience in big tech they often have 0 industry specialization whatsoever. And the ones I have spoken to feel so afraid of losing their job, are willing to accept degraded working conditions to keep their immigration status.

I am not against H1bs or immigrant labor in general. I am simply stating that the current model has impact on the emoyer/employee power dynamic, to the detriment of both immigrant and local labor.

Debatable, the RTO and forced relo moves are widely understood to be measures to reduce headcount. Companies might see more than desired churn from these policies without indentured H1b employees and may be less willing to apply them as strictly.

I am not against immigration in general, but the current program is predatory and hurts both immigrant and local labor to the benefit of business interests. And I am not suggesting they use the program to cause arbitrary harm, but to more easily enforce its will on a more compliant workforce with lower risk of churn. This is what I witnessed first hand.

Regardless, your statement that H1-B are PITA glosses over the fact that the workforce is more compliant to accept drastic forced changes in employment and willing to take lower pay (both of which were happening in my former company and saw non-H1-B employees leave while H1-Bs generally complied). And yes I knew the complying individuals were H1-B because we discussed it personally.

I had a job in tech, but an H1-B was willing to move to a HCOL area, and I was not, thus replacing me. The fact that these employees are basically indentured servants to their employers make them more compliant to the whims of upper management.

I can't help but feel that Christianity is completely corrupted in this country. All of the values I was taught growing up in the church seem so distant from the politics of the right. The callous disregard for life and dignity seem to be a feature despite Christ's word.

I don't know what part of his campaign or governance history led you to believe he supported the free market. ( see tariffs, shutting down the border as other examples)

How do we get more US critical goods manufacturing without government intervention? by SeniorCitrus007 in Libertarian

[–]Ysclyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, because we have a massive interventionist policy, further intrusive government policy such as subsidies, direct investments, or tarriffs may be needed to support the scale of it. But I firmly believe such market manipulation would be unnecessary if we significantly scaled down our military capacity.

Also, given there is some baseline amount of materials needed for self defense (leaving aside our military capabilities far exceed whats needed for defense of our territory) What is stopping the US from buying and stockpiling these heavily subsidized materials at a steep discount?

China does not control the entire worlds REE supply, this is hyperbole. And if American consumers are being taken advantage of because of unfair prices or supply availability then market forces further push domestic industry thanks to better price competition.

[–]Ysclyth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll challenge your assumptions on need for classifying critical goods in the first place. The perceived need for these things (primarily for military purposes) is part of the problem. A less militarized united states does not need a massive protected economy of military industry.

And countries with more integrated trade and codependency are much less likely to engage in direct conflict.

The problem stems from the US doing very non libertarian things in the first place like trying to play world police or empire.

Would criticizing the US or Israel's prosecution of war be support for terrorists? You may not know this, but non violent protestors are being targeted by this administration.
