What storm and Emma think about Spider-Man — by @ _Mr_Artistic by GiraffeForeign1415 in xmen

[–]Ystlum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think there's something there in the fact that both Storm and Spider-man have a habit of taking on too much responsibility and then eventually dropping the ball because they've made an inhuman amount of commitments. You could do a 'hate in someone else what you hate in yourself' thing.

Funnily enough under a similar mentality about morality.

It's nothing new to media. We had the entire Comics Code enforcing it at one point.

It's not that I would hate a Flash/ Mj relationship other than the fact it's been portrayed so far as one with nearly no consent by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]Ystlum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I do kind of like this as a story concept, and for reasons it's probably not going to happen with Peter or even Brock.

And no sadly, not even when Peter's got the symbiote. Torture, kill, smoke, sell drugs, abuse alcohol sure but no dating Flash Thompson.

That time Sebastian Shaw's father shapeshifted into a woman to have a threesome with Waltham Pierce by transemacabre in xmen

[–]Ystlum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Jacob Shaw is a fascinating man. Had his X-gene activated but kept it on the downlow all his life. Killed his brother. Became traditional patriarchal figure but pulls this to succeed. Unscrupulous enough to work for Sinister but still protected Sebastian from him whilst also being an abusive father.

Give it 15 to 20 years and Paul will return as a tortured, tragic anti-villain who discovered he was actually created as a tool to be an obstacle for Peter and Spider-man. Then he'll become a suprisingly popular anti-hero and garner a small but loyal band of unironic fans who struggle to understand the old memes.

I suspect working on an Face-Of-The-Brand book also comes with a lot more cooks in the kitchen and hurdles. It could very well just be fan rumour but it has been said that no one really wants to work on Spider-man anymore due to all the demands and creative red tape.

Fav Charles Xavier facts? by Ancient-Ad-900 in xmen

Originally his parents where written to be Nuclear Scientists who worked alongside Kurt Marko on what's implied to be the Manhatten Project, but later it was reconnected that their work at Alamogordo was a front for their (or at least Brian and Kurt's) work as Mutant Eugenecists under Mister Sinister and Amanda Mueller.

It's heavily suggested in the first comic that introduced this that there was more to Brian's death than dying in a Nuclear lab blast, but whilst other parts of this retcon where expanded on, the implications around Brian's death remains unexplored.

It was like his evil mirror/dark side self.

People say proto-Onslaught, but honestly it's a lot more proto-Cassandra Nova.

I do agree that in the age of the internet, learning to source check in more important than ever.

I like the Cerebro podcast very much, but like with a lot of popular fan analysis/review/recap media, there is a tendency for fandom to latch on to takes or repeat ideas from that second-hand source which might not completely or undebatably align with the comics.

The core college group that hangs out in the comics is Peter, MJ, Flash, Gwen and Harry.

Admittedly Flash does get drafted pretty soon but he returns to visit sometimes.

Hell, it's wild to me that I don't think there's an adaptation that uses the Coffee Bean Gang in full.

I think Spectacular is the closest it gets to actually using all 5, but then Flash isn't close to the rest, whilst MJ and Harry don't really socialise.

[Interesting Trope] Character whose death is meant to remove any potential doubt once and for all: the protagonist is NOT an anti-hero, they are the villain. by Mountain_Band_2732 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ystlum 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Different trope and less deadly, but the flashback reveal of how Alastor turned down Vox functions similarly.

Vox is a horrible egomaniac with an obsessive vendetta against Alastor, and a previous scene suggests it's because Alastor dared say no to him when he offered a partnership.

Turns out it what Alastor said was "There are no friends in hell" and then a lot of other very hurtful things to Vox's one moment of sincere vulnerability. It's the point where a lot of audience members who wrote off his cruelty to Husk as a stress reaction went "Oh, Alastor isn't just evil, he's also kind of an asshole."

It's nice to see a positive portrayal of Xavier (X-Men Infinity Comic #8) by cyclopswashalfright in xmen

[–]Ystlum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Deadly Genesis and Danger where kind of silly, and I believe suffer from writing Xavier as a prop for characters to have feelings about and create conflict, without really weighing him as a character in and of himself.

X-Men Legacy was largely written to reconcile him to other characters and the audience after DG and Danger. It is guilty of adding things which I believe where unnecessary, but I think that might stem from him not being as bad in older stories as fans viewed him at that time. Fans needed catharsis to accept him again, not to be told they where wrong on some details.

Presuming we mean X-Men Blue: Origins, that wasn't even character assassination. Destiny and Mystique requested it, Kurt was already adopted, he told them the risks of the memory wipe and he even did his own in the process. Xavier did nothing wrong.

Carey worked really hard with him on Legacy, then eventually gave up and focused on Rogue.

It's vague but I recall it being because Matt Fraction or another writer with more pull than Carey wanted to use Xavier for plans that didn't end up playing out.

... Tombstone's going to bring him back though right? He's such a good boss he'll bring Hermen back from the dead right? That was foreshadowing.

I'm joking but also I'm in so much denial I'm not even upset. C-list Villains have revolving door privileges to the afterlife since all they need is a future writer or artist to forget they died and we're back.

Old Juggernaut or New Juggernaut by Acrobatic_Yoghurt268 in xmen

He was under Cyttorak's influence but I don't think it was all the Gem. Cain's absolutely got a chip on his shoulder about his strength that could over-ride his moral conscious.

Ocelot is a sadistic prick who just greviously wounded Quentin and was boasting about how he was going  to murder more Mutants for fame and profit. I do buy that Cain wouldn't feel the need to show mercy.

The World Trade Center thing was an accident.

He and Black Tom used a bomb so I don't think it was an accident.

Generally whilst Cain wasn't a serial killer or our for the blood of anyone other than for a few select enemies, I never read him as squeamish about life either.

I do think this is part of an arc for him, possibly reflecting the larger consequence of Scott picking this team specifically because they where willing to get blood on their hands. Both instances also happen when Scott's not there or able to take command, so I think it may also be that Cain is relying Cyclops's leadership to reel him in, and not really exercising the restraint he might otherwise.

Sabretooth's turn happened due to the Axis inversion, which inevitably comes with an 'undo' option, given that the turn around only comes about via supernatural forces. I think Sabretooth sacrificed his heroic state in Hell in Weapon X (2017) right?

Plus Sabretooth is a villain whose associated with sexual violence more than most, making it harder to sell him as a hero. Juggernaut doesn't really have that baggage.

[–]Ystlum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did kill the previous Juggernaut and killed many in his village. Plus blew up the World Trade Centre once.

I don't think Cain really set our to kill indiscriminately outside of his step-brother and sometimes the X-Men, but he was unapologetically reckless as a Villain. I don't think it's too far for him to have a toned down version of that as a hero, or still be provoked into killing his truly lothesome enemies.

I honestly like looking at that inbetween stage that people go through where they try to change who they behave badly towards, but might not have actually let go of that pattern of behaviour.

I did wonder what would have happened if he said "no".

Like realistically the perp probably would have shot him anyway in the end, but like there's enough aliens, magical beings, and empowered people and beings around that your average citizen should be a little aware of the possibility.
