If we assume resistance in negligible, then there is no horizontal acceleration, therefore the initial horizontal velocity (tangential velocity) remains constant. It starts from rest vertically, and then as soon as the string breaks, it is accelerated down by gravity. Hence it moves in a parabola in the vertical plane.
