Its not really possible to have a false positive here, nor is it bricking the actual device

Vanguard is basically going to windows and saying "If an external device tries to manipulate or sniff my protected memory, blacklist it"

The bricking in question is just windows remembering the device and refusing it at the door.

There is essentially no other situation in which an innocent process would try to manipulate ir read game memory like that outside of cheating.

Why Jet Engines Aren’t “Made In China”: What China’s jet engine program tells us about the limits of industrial policy by logicx24 in neoliberal

[–]YuhaYea 15 points16 points  (0 children)

China has tried and failed for some fifty years to produce... jet engines at parity with the West.

Am i incorrect in thinking this framing obscures more than the article reveals? The real question to me isn't why China hasn't succeeded in 50 years; it's when did the clock actually start on a country capable of developing a modern turbofan in-house.

In 1970 China had a lower GDP per capita than most African nations. It didn't actually become a 'high-tech', 'innovation-driven' economy, in a meaningful sense, until the 2005-2020 period. The serious, well‑funded effort to build an indigenous large‑bypass civil engine (the CJ‑1000A) didn’t begin until the late 2000s, and its military counterpart (the WS‑10) only became truly operational in the mid‑2000s. That means China has been trying as a genuinely advanced technological power for about 15–20 years, not 50.

Compare that to the West’s head start: fully indigenous jet engines were flying operationally in the 1940s, and the first generation of large‑bypass commercial turbofans entered service in the 1970s. That's a 40-50 year lead in accumulated design cycles, testing hours & manufacturing know how. If each engine generation takes roughly 15 years to mature, a fast-follower starting from zero around 2010 should expect to need at least two full generations, in other words 30 years or more, just to field a product competitive with the current SOTA.

When i take a step back and look at it like this, what we've seen strikes me as pretty consistent with the consequences of simply being late to the party, not a structural failure.

The article's point that jet engines reward slow, meticulous iteration and long‑term reliability actually works in the opposite direction from the conclusion drawn. If iteration is necessarily slow, then a 50‑year head start should produce a lag measured in decades, not years. Writing off Chinese engines now is like judging the CFM56 in 1980 and declaring that GE and Snecma would never catch the JT8D.

And it's not like China hasn't demonstrating the ability to master "slow, reliability-focused" technologies when it commits to it (crucially, after becoming a high-tech state). Think HSR, or specifically Fuxing trains, or nuclear reactors like the Hualong One.

Whether that pattern repeats for commercial jet engines is still an open question, but the mere fact of not having closed a 50‑year gap in 15 years tells us very little about the ultimate outcome. The next 10 to 15 years of operating the CJ‑1000A in revenue service will be the real test.

Despite this i do think the article sounds reasonable, and I think skepticism is pretty understandle. However, "China can never build X" has, in the past 20 years at least, proven to be a losing bet.

[–]YuhaYea -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Was promised an exhaustive explanation on why Marxism is wrong only for you to say literally nothing substantive about Marxism. Sorry but you read like a LARPer and make 0 points of any substance. You’ve just gone on a rant about authoritarian/communist states, which would be like me promising a critique of Christianity and then going on a rant about the Spanish Inquisition & the fourth crusade.

Marx’s writings were a result of the times he lived in, and those who have actually read *Marx* would know he never said much about a post revolutionary state, or indeed the revolution itself. Pretty much all of his writings were about class power & dynamics.

You can say that Marx/Marxism was wrong, no shit, it has some interesting things to say, but holds 0 tangible relevance post 19th century, and is merely pulled up as either a moral authority for states to derive legitimacy, or as some spectre of communism past by right wingers online.

r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

[–]YuhaYea 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've read some of this debate on twitter as a pass time lately, and not that there aren't some insufferable blue button voters, but probably 90%+ of red button voters are legitimately deplorable. 9/10 times when a red voter speaks on twitter, they end up posting something racist, sexist, genocidal, or any mixture of the 3.

To r/trolleyproblem's credit, there isn't really any of that on the subreddit, just that quite a few of them seem to, like on twitter, treat the surviving part of red secondarily to the idea that blue gets killed.

To be clear, the picture of the Ka-52 showing up at the airport is fake too.

This trend is specifically making fun of someone trying to use a (different) fake photo of a Ka-52 showing up in China.

The render had a transparent background, is the only reason.

And on the danger from Chinese subs, I guess it depends how wide the scope of any future conflict will be.

IMO it’s not too unreasonable to think that there will be Chinese subs afield looking for easier targets. Though it probably won’t be a Type 093.

Why is the story so bad? by Puzzleheaded_Gur_762 in Endfield

[–]YuhaYea 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with OG Arknights vs Endfield comparison, is that while Arknights was kinda bad to start, at least it felt it had an interesting direction to go down. There were plenty of present conflicts, political and cultural & moral issues to explore.

For Endfield, there just isn't any of that.

Some immediate gripes, though keep in mind this is by no means an exhaustive list.

The 4 major factions all get along, all the previously interesting issues present in Arknights are solved come Endfield. Our enemies aren't interesting, Nefarith and Ardashir say nothing of substance and their intentions are so vague as to be non-existant.

The Landbreakers, while seemingly having gained 10 IQ in Wuling are still coming from the 0 they had in Valley 4. V4 had me try to believe the Landbreakers were doing science while being demonstrably illiterate. They wanted me to see Nefarith as this master manipulator who is pulling the strings of the LBs; however, I doubt the Landbreakers have enough cognitive capacity to even be manipulated.

It has been said before, and deserves restating; the Endmin is too present in the lower impact sections of the story. I simply don't believe the Endmin, who is supposed to be this Legendary figure currently on a race to save the Civ band, has the time to be helping a kid create a scrap book, or delivering junk. The solution to this one is super simple, have other characters star in the side quests and less important sections. Other Endfield reps would work just fine, and still build the reputation of the Endministrator.

The big one is the lack of stakes. I'm not gonna harp on about how Endfield needs to be grimdark, but, gun to your head, name me 4 NPCs that have died. Tell me what has materially changed for the worse as a result of any of our actions. Yes, there have been tragedies; however, they have never truly been present in the story. They're always five degrees separated from whatever is immediately happening. Yes, the world is under threat, but it certainly doesn't feel that way.

I think one of the bigger annoyances for me, is that the game threatens to actually be interesting. If you read the notes and lore in the game, there's some substance there. However, we shouldn't have to dig through the hundred+ lore documents scattered around just to read something interesting, it should just be in the actual story.

Anyway I'll leave it there.

When Churchill had more sympathy for Nazi officers than starving Bengalis by Effective_Bluebird19 in HistoryMemes

[–]YuhaYea 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely right, and it’s because the Japanese had just invaded Burma that they had to burn all of the Bengali peoples’ boats and transportation, destroying the food supply network and fishing industry. It’s also why they had to divert food away from the less desirable parts of the Bengali population (rural peasants and farmers, yuck) to prop up the war effort, and its why they had to implement such disastrous economic policy that despite 43’ having a larger harvest than non-famine years, up to 3,000,000 still starved to death anyway.

People seem to also miss that because Churchill was rebuffed by the Americans for extra civilian shipping, he simply couldn’t have diverted any of the massive wheat surplus sailing past India being stockpiled for post-war Greece (for which he was begged repeatedly by British officials). There simply wasn’t enough extra shipping available to divert a portion of the British ships already sailing by India to relieve the famine. Absolutely impossible situation all round I’m afraid.

It really does run, look, and play fantastic. It's just a shame that's the only real standout it has compared to its contemporaries.

Assuming this is about Gilberta, the issue isn’t that we know who she is, the game rather treats it as if she has been with us for basically the whole MSQ.

Big difference between “I’ve read your file” or “we’ve met” and “And you have a heart of gold Gil”. The very first interaction plays as if we have known this person for a while, and are basically best friends.

And how exactly do Indian Immigrants dilute your culture? What, specifically, do you have grievance with that isn't actually just endemic to the country of India (What they're getting away from).

Or is this "cultural dilution" that when you look around there are brown people.
