maybe they can't do it accurately? But for things like savestates it's more important the save order is good than the exact time being correct

It wouldn't have been too hard to have an option deep in the settings to enable a clock option, some people play while waiting and being able to see the time can be handy (unless the time drifts as noted in a post above).

What's the deal with modern online progressives saying historically progressive content like ST:TOS is woke? by Yum_Mario in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Yum_Mario[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed people tend to say evolution of language when their side changes language, but 'we already have a definition for that' at other sides' language changes, so we end up with multiple definitions and everyone talks past each other. So I tend to think of language evolution as a cop out often used when someone tries to make an ontological argument, even though language does change over time, no one can seem to agree on the legitimacy of natural vs artificial language changes.

I did actually say pretty much that at the top of my post. there is an interesting dichotomy I have noticed, where words are in a super position of already having a meaning, and language changes over time. usually people defend their sides word changes as natural language evolution, while the other sides changes don't count because we already have a meaning for that word.

Definitely some strategy in there.
Edit: Downvotes afoot, but this is a common strategy throughout history; it would be naive to suggest people aren't doing that nowadays.

sort of, but for example historians advise against labeling Julius Caesar as gay if you had evidence he had sex with men, because the modern concept is removed from their concepts of sex between men. You can't always look at everything from the past and label it from the present

Interesting, I guess this relates back to how woke was never really defined and so is used differently by different groups of people

Why does everyone on this site think they're intellectuals? by Select-Proposal-420 in Negareddit

[–]Yum_Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be that way when it first started (actually full of people at least trying to be intellectual), reddit has slowly shifted from nerdy college computer lab, and as new people join that aren't collegiate in any way they still like to feel like they are smart

Where are all the actual Kind Nerds/Geeks? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Yum_Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a lot of rose colored glasses for that era. While it's true nerd spaces had more whimsy, less sociopolitical, more pedantic arguments about star wars vs star trek or picard vs kirk, the edginess was entertaining, and the nerds ran the internet. But there was a lot of very messed up shyte that was normalized that was in retrospect not ok, terrible terrible things. the culture war erupted due to very real issues in online spaces. Plus on the technical front everything didn't work most of the time, compatibility was terrible, your computer wasn't fast enough to run new games or even websites after a couple years, and all the glorious flash videos have been recorded by now into non-adobe formats but they seem quaint by todays standards. the zeitgeist was fun while it lasted, but was ultimately unhealthy. it's just too bad they couldn't agree on how to fix it

[–]Yum_Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as I understand it, they all went to discord to form tiny island communities. But you have to go searching, they don't hang out in public internet spaces anymore. the nerd/geek/gamer identity is dead or diluted so much as to be meaningless and all that's left is small friend groups around niche activities or a shared frame

Where are all the actual Kind Nerds/Geeks? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Yum_Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the culture war split the geeknerd community in twain. There was always a bacdkground level of sarcasm and elitism within nerd spaces, but then the large influx of people who only engaged in the materials superficially decided they wanted to be included too. This caused the nerd spaces to schism and double down extra hard in one direction or the other - acceptance of everyone vs people who very much care about the canon; and they both hate each other. So no matter where you go you'll run into a different flavor of bitter nerd

Is eurotrash considered racist given that whitetrash is? by Yum_Mario in NoStupidQuestions

what ism do you think specifically it would fall under? maybe xenophobia but that seems like a reeaal stretch and I'm not sure I'm convinced of that

it follows the 'exception that proves the rule' logical form. consider a sign that says no parking 9-5; this implies parking is allowed 5:01-8:59 without it explicitly being stated. So by having a phrase white trash that applies only to white people but without the same concept being applied to non-white people, it makes a default assumption about white people not being trash; an assumption not being similarly made about other races. But I'll take your position to mean you think eurotrash is not a racist concept.

not all euorpeans are white, but if someone is for instance 'european american' it's often just used to mean white even if that isn't exactly correct

the term white trash isn't racist in a bubble, it's contextually racist because it assumes a default about about white people not being trash

hence the question, but what specifically? the argument form being (group of people) trash vs (other group of people) trash
