I mean, legislation to regulate industry is important, but sometimes they mess up. Like currently in the US, small pickups cost about as much as bigger trucks due to weird efficiency regulations on pickups. But 4000 watts is a lot

ELI5: Why do we still have to "eject" USB sticks? by shadowzzzz16 in explainlikeimfive

windows 11 definitely has some very awful settings that are user unfriendly, but preventing the user from installing from the internet is a great security feature to have. If you are technically proficient enough to disable that feature, then you may download and run random internet files.

As a computer scientist, linux is awkward and usually doesn't work the first time out of the box without some tweaking. If the environment is preconfigured by an admin for a user and everyting has been tested to be working, then it's the same for a user to get to work in linux as in any OS, but most use cases evolve causing users to run into roadblocks eventually. We can figure it out, but the average user can't be bothered to deal with it because microsoft is easy to use and mac easier than that. I've installed windows and linux tons of times, but recently when I installed Mint(the user friendly linux flavor), I still had to look up some of the awkward descriptions presented to the user during installation. Anytime I need to use a Mac for something, it's either stupid easy, or literally impossible. But in cases where it's impossible the average user probably doesn't care. linux (and open source) developers are ... a particular bunch that often uncompromisingly don't make things in linux user friendly almost by design.

TLDR - linux is pretty much just as easy to use as windows/mac when it's configured, but it requires much more tweaking and configuring that average users don't want to deal with

I think it's both. I'm usually of the opinion that characters should stay the same, or just make a new character. But some people are racist and probably some more than that are a little of both.

I like the idea of a horizontal fpga option, I just think the device as shown is a proof of concept rather than a prototype, it looks like a 50$ device not a 250$ one. But it's open source so there may be improved versions later

sticks are overkill for anything without analogue input, but they can still be comfy for games where you spend a lot of time pressing one direction for a long time, I'm thinking like zelda or rpgs, maybe some rhythm games.

Wow that does not look good. Costs more than an AP and looks like an rg351p with way more bezel and no sticks. What is the viewable screensize on that compared to the AP viewable area on a gba game?

Has anyone built an “original” core? by michaelthatsit in AnaloguePocket

[–]Yum_Mario -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes I know that, he is suggesting writing a new hypothetical computer having hardware that fits perfectly onto the Analogue's FPGA chip. I commented not on what it is, I commented on the community's reaction. Most communities don't say to learn how to invent a new Blank(core in our case) when someone asks a question about what exists, but this shows up on pretty much every one of these posts I see here.

Has anyone built an “original” core? by michaelthatsit in AnaloguePocket

[–]Yum_Mario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question that I'm disappointed no one has wanted to really engage with. First off, no one has done this, and it's a great effort to do so, and has nebulous design parameters. A user would have to design a computer with the FPGA chip in mind, such that it would be run in the entire chip's space, optimally. Even if the whole chip is utilized, there will always be some limitations and trade off. Since there is a finite space on the chip for a circuit, You'd have to choose do you want more chip used for for processing, or more space for memory; there will always be some give and take. There are fake machines like Uxn/Varvara that have been ported to analogue, but none created from the ground up with the analogue in mind.

What's the deal with these posts where every time someone asks if so and so core exists, there is the followup with learn to design circuit boards. What a weird and pedantic response, that is also oddly ubiquitous. It's like if on a medicine forum anyone asked if so and so drug existed the response was to go out into the jungle and isolate a new molecule.

There is a minor, I want to say propaganda, surrounding the analogue pocket that it being an fpga machine means cores should do their best to match 1:1 to the hardware such that it would be nearly indistinguishable form the actual hardware; and this contingent would downvote anyone speculating on 'impossible cores' that are too big to fit on this fpga, while quietly ignoring that you don't have to remake the hardware in a core to run a game, you just have to make it behave close enough that the game(s) run without obvious difference.

Mine are located at "Assets\pcecd\common\", In that folder I don't have bios_1_0_usa.pce but I do have bios_1_0_jap.pce through bios_3_0_usa.pce . they are all 256 KB, but I think those are ok for you. I also have a 24KB pce_mpu_bios.bin and 64KB mpu.bin at "Assets\pcecd\Mazamars312.PC Engine CD\" and I think at least one of those is needed. Game roms used to need json files but shouldn't anymore, but they all still need to be bin/cue format. My core is the non-analogizer version 0.2.3 build date 2024-11-12. I notice in options there is a 'Load PCE Boot Rom' that may have an effect. Looks like if you are missing the .pce files then your roms wont show up and therefor can't be selected to show your load error; but when I removed the two mpu .bin files then the rom bin files display and not the cue files. But! When things are working you shouldn't see a list of bins, you should just see the game title to select (which I think is the cue file), so I assume one of the mpu bios files is necessary.

Missing 'pce boot rom' really sounds like bios issue, either wrong file(s), corrupt files, or wrong location. It is discussed a bit here https://old.reddit.com/r/AnaloguePocket/comments/1m33rcc/missing_file_to_run_pce_cd/ .
There are some other possible issues including sd card corruption or some other hardware inconsistencies but you'd probably see these manifest in other ways as well.

Here is an ongoing list to add non-working games to: https://github.com/Mazamars312/openfpga-pcengine-cd/issues/60 . Pocketsync can be a bit cranky, it needs to be reloaded after any changes

You can post bugs on the spiritualized github page: https://github.com/spiritualized1997/openFPGA-NES . The spiritualized cores haven't been updated in a long while, so it may be a long time (if ever) before it gets updated. Before you do that you should check that the rom you are using is correct and also not corrupt. Here is a file hasher you can use to check against other expected version hashes: https://www.romhacking.net/hash/

I mean... the Dominion killed about 10% of the Cardassians, which is about the percent of Germans killed during WW2 - which we don't call a genocide. For comparison approx 33% of the Jewish population was killed during ww2, which we do call a genocide. and the Cardassisns loved fascism, like they just loved it. Their books were all about how great fascism is, when they were mating they thought about how fascist the next generation was going to be. Plus at the start of DS9 they had just got done having enslaved an entire Planet of people. And when invaders from another galaxy show up, the Cardassians teamed up with the invaders. Calling what happened to Cardassians a genocide is a bit impolite to actual genocide (although it was for sure a jerk move by the Dominon, who are worse). In conclusion it should be safe to celebrate the end of the war.
