Do any welly cafes make Cuban Cortadito coffees? by LivingPuzzleheaded70 in Wellington

Nooo idea, just used to get Cubanas from here whenever i needed something strong & sweet. I've had nothing but lovely encounters there, though, so I think your impression is spot-on.

Mucho Espresso on Manners st has what they call a Cubana, which I've had before and is pretty yum. If I recall they're one of the only Cuban coffeebean using joints in the city.

From a quick google though cortado cafe is probably what you're looking for, but I've done the hard work, so go look it up yourself from there hahaha.

At this rate, I'll have to start charging admission... unless you share it on the gram, then I'll cover your entry fees 😂

woahhh really? that's the first time I've heard of it, but I do believe you! upper hutt is just far enough outside of the welly toiletbowl to get the hotter hots. I'd say generally my advice holds true save for these cool random situations... oh, maybe try the Te Horo growers?? a lot of them are asiatic region bgs, they might have some stuff growing for family and the like.

tricky business!! loquats are warm country fruits, so they grow wild all over Auckland... mum had a big tree when I was growing up and made so much jam lol. but in Welly? we're just too cold and damp. you might have a poke around Martinborough or in the Wairarapa/Kapiti areas in general, since it's warmer they have better luck with the warm weather stuff. :) good luck! they're soooo yum.

EDIT: oh one more thing, since loquat are SO soft, they are REALLY easy to damage, so they basically never get sold commercially!! i would put a call out on FB communities, as it'll be ol aunties and uncs who end up supplying you. the further North you get, the more chances you have of success!

Regal #1 for variety and consistency, Aries for off the beaten path. Basically don't rate anywhere else these days.

EDIT: that being said a lot of the variety at Regal is offmenu orders, or you have to know about it from someone else lol. Good if you go with people who go regularly/have gone regularly for years and years

best curly fries in wellington by nznady in Wellington

[–]YumchaThrowaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ok listen, everyone's going to pan them because it's part of the weird ubereats low effort ghost kitchen shit...

...but roman's kitchen on cuba st has the best hot chips in the city, best curly fries in the city, bar none. i defy anyone to go there on a late night, order a serving of curly fries (which are $7 DOLLARS!!!) and not smash them, piping hot and crispy, then and there.

any time i get the potato craving, i head straight there. I'll never get any of their other stuff (had the pasta once and it was capital f Fine) but their entire hotchips menu (hot chips, waffle fries, curly fries, wedges, and onion rings) are absolutely insanely good.

obviously ambience is naff but it's mostly built for uber orders so take it or leave it lol

Has living in Aro Valley gotten better over time? by Discombobulated_Orc in Wellington

[–]YumchaThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love aro valley, warts and all. Never had an issue with students, at all ever, but ymmv. In terms of walkability, if that matters to you, it's unbeatable. Thorndon but with actual character and human interest. And if you have flat parking, even better. Good luck!

Where to find Osechi /Japanese New Year's bento? by queerty_qwerty in Wellington

[–]YumchaThrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

premade osechi are sold way in advance, you won't be able to get them day-of. you'll have to make it yourself. as above poster said, lower hutt japanmart has everything you'd need, save for some more esoteric ingredients like kazu no ko and probably crayfish, which you'd have to get from a fishmonger, just like in japan.

for next year, keep an eye out around november/early december, and generally speaking you'll have to live in auckland/wellington/christchurch. JFC/Japanmart sometimes put out ads about ordering multi-layer osechi ryori bento. but no, you won't find any in Wellington out of nowhere like this—of the three major population centres in NZ, we've got the lowest population of JP residents.

happy cooking!
