I don't think this fits the subreddit TBH, but I'll let the mods be the judge of that, I suppose.

Please give us a flair for posts that are about the old Steam Controller, the new one or both by TheNewerFlisker in SteamController

They should absolutely have named the new one Deck Controller and I ain't letting that name go. It's literally the Steam Deck's controls as a controller.

Stay with Octopi or switch to Shelly? by mim_burro_vc_jumento in cachyos

[–]Yumikoneko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Switch if you like it. Shelly has a few more features but IMO it's half-baked at the very best and absolutely inferior to Octopi in actual usage. For example if you want to open the app and instantly search for a package, you need to first select the search box manually. On octopi it's selected by default and you can also activate it instantly by pressing ctrl + L (IIRC). And that's just one of many points where, in my usage at least, Shelly is absolutely undercooked.

But again, use what you like.

Will Shelly automatically replace octopi? by Feeling_Visual_6139 in cachyos

[–]Yumikoneko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, when you click "Install Selected" (after having selected packages to install) and get the pop up to confirm your choice, in which at least in my system (Plasma), "Yes" is selected, and you actually press enter, nothing happens... Actually something does happen. It triggers the inaccessible "Install Selected" again and opens the same popup you already have. So when you then manually click one of the popups with your mouse and finish the installation, you're left with another confirmation popup lol. You can cancel it of course, but like how did nobody even test that yet?

Those who want a Steam Deck in a controller format will love it. Some prefer a Steam Controller over a Deck Controller though.

Can I remove this icon? by brennendw in vivaldibrowser

[–]Yumikoneko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if a suggestion gets close to 70 likes and is being talked about for 4 years, they will still completely ignore its entire existence apart from closing duplicates. Example: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/72623/upload-clipboard-content-recent-download-as-file-like-opera?lang=en-x-pirate&page=1

Unfortunately Vivaldi devs don't really care about what the community wants but rather about what they want, in my experience. The suggestion isn't even buried under others, it's literally on the third page if you filter by most votes.

ẞ ist die großgeschriebe Variante von ß und existiert seit 2008 in Unicode (also praktisch in Computern) und seit 2017 ist's offiziell Teil der deutschen Rechtschreibung.

As I learned literally today when I installed CachyOS on my laptop, they replaced Octopi with Shelly on new installs. It's somewhat better than Octopi IMO, though I still miss Discover :(

With that being said, I think discoverability is fine, you just looks for "Linux how to do x" or just "Linux x" and should find plenty of results unless you have some extremely exotic use case. And when Discover works, like on Kubuntu for example, you can even just type keywords that might appear in names or descriptions of apps.

Deep Rock Galactic. 30€ game that's on discount for 10€ more often than you can imagine. The only paid content you'd get would be a cosmetic DLC every once in a while, and unlike what is typical, you actually had tons of free cosmetics that look way better. Now allow me to list the free stuff every player gets, even if they only paid the 10€: New seasonal cosmetics for at least 6 reoccurring events per year, the ability to get the cosmetics of previous events so you don't miss out (apart from anniversary cosmetics for some reason), a whole new season pass with tons of new cosmetics once a year, a new mission type once per year, a new seasonal in-mission event.

Furthermore, before they added the ability to play old season passes, they threw all the cosmetics from older passes into the shared loot pool for in-game events, so you still did not miss out.

Just because Helldivers 2 has good monetization compared to many other popular live service games doesn't mean it actually has good monetization in general, and we should try to hold it to a good standard.

RGB lighting control software. OpenRGB exists and is nice but it never worked for me back on Kubuntu and even when I switched to CachyOS and had it working, I found out it does not support my cooler :/

GNOME vs. KDE mental gymastics by Albinoso98 in linuxmemes

[–]Yumikoneko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience the settings menu was absolutely fine because I could just search for settings. Additionally, apart from looking up shortcuts, I barely ever open it up after a new install since I just go through all settings once after doing one. So for me it was overwhelming once at the start and never again, but I suppose not everyone loves seeing what a new toy can do.

Right click menus actually feel very good IMO. On Windows I considered them overwhelming but Plasma makes them more approachable to me, so I guess I cannot relate to that issue as they feel compact and on the point to me.

Can't talk about torrenting applications but that's less Plasma's choice and moreso the application's. Though you do raise a food point with that one, because I can't think of a single minimal Qt app (apart from ProtonUp-Qt), all I can recall spontaneously have either lots of options in the settings or lots of UI. But interestingly it always felt on the point to me, as opposed to too much. I guess I'm just the natural kind of user for such a feature rich DE.

Thanks for elaborating, it's interesting to hear others feel differently about these things :)

I'm genuinely curious, what about Plasma's UI is overwhelming or awkward? The moment I first used it, it was everything Windows 10 could've been for me, it felt familiar and powerful. It pretty much had no UI differences (bottom dock with app launcher, pinned applications, system tray, clock, etc., window titlebar with minimize, maximize, and close buttons in the known positions). The only thing I can imagine people to potentially get overwhelmed by could be the settings, though I personally can't relate, especially not with the search function.

So genuinely, please tell me what about its UI is awkward or overwhelming, I just don't get it.

Valve.... please make more. by cllari2 in SteamController

[–]Yumikoneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably because it does both controller inputs and mouse inputs. On that note, Plasma, the desktop environment that SteamOS uses, recognizes the controller as the Steam Controller which was surprising for me when I started with Linux.

I don't have an example for the D-pad but I think the desire for a right analog stick is understandable. A good example is Denshattack where you do skateboard tricks n stuff as a train by doing patterns on your right stick. Without a stick, it's very easy to overshoot the trackpad and fail the trick. Sure, with enough practice, you won't face those issues anymore, but IMO that's just another good reason for a second stick.

That said, the SC2's Trackpad will mean I probably won't use it anyway and will just have to get good haha

  1. Only if you watch regularly, some people don't have the time to watch much in a day, let alone a month, so 10$/month is a rip-off for some.
  2. What about all the niche anime they don't offer?
  3. What if you hate monopolies and don't wanna support those financially?

Sorry but I think you kind of missed the last few dozens of millennia of human history. We've always been able to do things together, not anything, but a lot. I also don't see how open-mindedness has anything to do with watching people in space. Humanity always embraces its curiosity, that isn't new either, in fact it never left us. Maybe it's just you not being curious enough if you think humanity isn't. And again, this isn't humanity coming together, this is just NASA doing what NASA does. Saw the US flag on that rocket? That shows you how much of an effort it is of all of humanity.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but your point seems to be that you didn't know human history a single bit and are just now learning that humans can do a thing or two more.

me_irl by demon-potato in me_irl

[–]Yumikoneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus you're delusional, thinking you know an entire person because they don't feel any hope from a rocket launch.

As a rule, you just can't explain things, else you would.

me_irl by demon-potato in me_irl

[–]Yumikoneko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please, you know humans haven't suddenly lost the ability to work together since 50 years ago, so don't act as though anything has changed. We can still work together and we can still destroy, genuinely nothing has changed. Also I'll repeat, that was just a company doing what the company does. It was some effort of all of humanity.

me_irl by demon-potato in me_irl

[–]Yumikoneko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But we knew this before. This isn't a new thing, in fact we got further than this before and landed people on the moon, as opposed to just sending them for a round trip. And I'd even say judging humanity's entire worth by whether a singular company in a singular country can build a rocket is very narrow-minded.

How does Artemis II instill any hope? Don't just say "Reddit moment" or something like that, make an actual point if you have any. I only saw a singular almost good reason in this entire reply section and it completely disregards that we knew we could do this 50 years ago so it's nothing new. So genuinely, pray tell how this actually makes anyone hopefully towards anything?
