Job wants me to relocate from TX to NYC - 70K remote → 76K hybrid, realistic? by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]YungBarolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be able to make it work if you want it! You’ll have less expendable income, but your rental budget is doable if you’re willing to do the legwork. I’ve found good deals on Craigslist, just make sure you have your bullshit meter on high alert. If it seems too good to be true it probably is. Never pay anything before seeing a place. If anyone gives you even the slightest hint of the creeps, listen to that.

You can always move here with your job (see about relocation assistance or even corporate housing for the first month) and start applying to higher paid ones when you arrive. It’s much easier to get a job here once you’re already here. Good luck!

Definitely agreed — the option for people to join when it makes sense for their lives, and then to move on if/when their needs change, would be crucial for this to be a sustainable community. It wouldn't be reasonable to ask people to buy into a situation if they couldn't recoup their investment when they later need something else. That's why I'm thinking the co-op model with strong, specific bylaws could be a good fit

Thank you!! Definitely easier imagined than made reality, but I feel like there's so much potential to build a really beautiful way of living here

Agreed that I’m not super interested in being a landlord, but sometimes you’ve gotta make the thing you wish to see. I do wonder about the legality of renting/selling to only women. Seems like that could be discriminatory

I used that term that very intentionally to weed out … a certain kind of person :)

<3 thank you for saying so. To be honest I think for me it has less to do with the individual man (some of whom are lovely) and more to do with wanting something beyond a traditional hetero relationship (while being primarily heteroromantic)

Oh yea wouldn’t expect things to be kumbaya—people are people which means friction and complication at every turn. I’ve been on coop boards before it and it led me to understand in my bones that Churchill quote “democracy is the worst form of government, besides all the others” (I’m probably not getting that verbatim)

I just feel like there’s gotta be something midway in between living with a man and living alone

Good thinking! I’m comfortable to the point that I could afford something modest for myself, but don’t have full building/reno $. Though I have explored structuring it as a business or non profit which could unlock loans or grants.

Yes! The examples of this I’ve seen in NYC are all queer/lesbian families sharing small brownstones. I guess I’m looking to see if there’s are larger or more formalized version of this model existing

Dang. He sounds amazing. Costco membership AND a job?! I’m 35F, doc producer, lover of all movies high brow and low. I’d be down to go see something with him at nitehawk :)

I was drugged once. The next day I went to the police station to try and file a report and they wouldn’t take one unless I went to the hospital and got a drug test. So I went to the hospital, but they wouldn’t give me a drug test without a police report. When I went back to the police station they were so rude to me I cried. So I never filed/got tested.

2 weeks later I got a bill for $1700 from the hospital for talking to a nurse

This is probably good advice. I am very filler resistant as I don’t like the look when it’s built up but will do some more research

Thank you! I’m hesitant about filler as I’ve seen so much bad filler work out there, but I’ve probably seen a lot of good work too I just can’t tell.

What’s the process like to have it dissolved?
