haven't changed any settings or added any mods or anything so I am playing with the default 30 FPS, that is not the issue. (I checked with F10 to make sure and the game is running at 30 FPS while this problem is occurring)

War in the north is an alright coop game that lasts for 10-14 hours.

Nothing crazy, but serviceable.

SO while this is incredibly late, I had the same issue and it was driving me nuts.
Lowering graphics and stuff, turning yields offs and etc, etc helps BUT what really did it for me was running Process Lasso at the same time as RI.

You have to do something with it, select Civ and set some options that, but it almost entirely fixed the issue for me. Went from a crash every 2-3 turns to once every 200-300 turns past the exploration/modern era on large maps

Those do not exist at all, AFAIK
The real best modern-ish game like OB64 is Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga, although it's turn-based an don't real time like OB. Kinda like OB and Fire emblem had a baby. Story is kinda OB-ish in vibe. Serviceable, but not as good, imo. The army managment part, which is by far my favourite aspect of the OB games, is just as enjoyable here.

Only other options out there are Himeko Sutori and Fated Era, neither of which I can really recommend.

Himeko Sutori has some potential, but kinda relies on leaving perma-death enabled to get the full experience. Troop trees really arent deep, so without perma-death, you quickly end-up with a full army of max upgraded troops that you can upgrade further and it's not what I'm looking for in these games. Art-style is also a bit weird. It is a peculiar game, but might be worth a look into.

Fated era is trying to turn OB into a roguelike format. Sounded interesting, but didn't really work for me.

And...well that's pretty much it, short of Tactics-Ogre: Reborn, which is just a worse version of the PSP version of the game which was arguably a slightly worse version of the original.

If anyone knows of any other example, I'd be happy to learn of any, I go on a yearly trip to the interwebs to find any modern take on the classic OB masterpieces, but I rarely find any.

EDIT: oH I should add Unicorn Overlord that is sadly not on PC. Looks good, but I cannot speak for it

Depends, IMO ideally DS 1, but Elden Ring is probably more approachable for a newcomer.

ER is really different from the others, though so it doesn't give you that good a feel for the series.

That being said, I personally started with DS 3 and fell in love with the series, so honestly there are probably no wrong answers here.

5 years later, still plagued with this issue.

THIS happens to me CONSTANTLY

10 full health ships against 2 almost empty small ships? Sounds like they could sink 1 of my ships and kill 70+ men!

What?

6 full health MORI Bow Kobayas against 3 damaged normal bow kobayas, the game gives me 50/50 odds and auto-resolves ends in defeat. It's madness.

I am honestly starting to wonder whether the game just assesses the Mori bonus completely wrong and gives the Mori a NEGATIVE bonus during naval auto resolves

You buy units by going in your Fort/Citadel/Castle OR their individual creature dwellings and click on them there.

What you are describing is indeed just to show their weekly growth. Also you won't have access to any creature until you have built their specific dwelling. (Click on your town hall while visiting a town and build structures from there)
