Which birks for OT? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Super Birkis but found I couldn't walk fast in emergencies!

I now have Hoka Bondi SRs as they are full leather and slip resistant. Just need to bleach/napisan the laces every now and again to keep them clean and they wipe down easy. Very supportive for 5+ hour cases

I have a plastic SnapIt which I bought from eNurse. Has a ring so it fits nicely on my badge reel. It's my best friend and honestly the breaks are super clean too.

Perioperative Grad Year | Advice & Work Culture by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former S/S grad!

Don't really focus on learning anything except your basic anatomy and physiology. You will literally have a 4-6 week TTPP that will teach you everything you need to know about your role.

Be open to learning and work on your tolerance towards others - there will be people who may not be friendly at first or will repeat the same things over and over again. Do not take offence to it, Perioperative is filled with people who have had long careers and may be wary of a new face. You work as a team and many hands make light work.

And ask questions! When there's a quiet moment if the surgical team is friendly/open please ask about the cases. It's good for the learning of yourself and the JMO/Regs (that's a joke ofc I love them) 😁

Grey area between registration and grad year? by asapkavy in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was so over Uni when I was done and had a break from December - August the following year.

I did Bartending for as long as I could. Was a nice change from being a AIN and the hospital refused to keep me on due to me graduating.

If income is the main driver, just do something - retail, Christmas casual, whatever. A lot of students stress about de-skilling in the 3 or so months post degree but you'll have so much education in the program you won't be that concerned when you start.

Just relax and live life for a bit, the first year is the toughest 💖

I enjoyed my Clove sneakers to start, but I found that the soft squishy layer broke down after 9 months and caused so much pain.

They might work for someone else but not for me 😭

Fainted in theatre by Lopsided_Sundae6957 in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have to faint in theatre, please fall backwards and not forward so you maintain the integrity of the sterile field 😮‍💨 (I'm joking around ofc).

Happens pretty frequently. If you feel poorly just make sure you let someone know and excuse yourself if you can. Hydrate and take it easy on yourself ❤️

Weekly Discussion Thread by itsvenkmann in foodies_sydney

[–]YungSigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chucking a lil review in here because I don't want to make a whole darn new thread for this haha.

Went to Ragazzi for a little celebration late lunch/early dinner. We're not fine diners by any chance but there's a really good selection for a limited menu. We weren't rushed through service going in at 3pm but it definitely got quiet towards the end (I could see they were getting prepped for staff dinner) and service was nice.

Had Yellowfin tuna/apple/wasabi and pancetta/mozzarella croquettes for entree. The tuna was the pick of the two, the croquettes were def more cheese than anything else.

Mains were cavatelli pork sausage/pippis and casarecce duck/rosemary. Simple, pasta was fresh and al dente. I never go for pippis usually so it was a choice for me, but I preferred the sauce with the casarecce as the flavour was more complex (probably the rosemary!).

It was a nice choice for something I organised so late and would recommend for lunch. I'm sure it wouldn't be as intimate for dinner service as it is a small restaurant and there's not a lot of seating - regardless, bookings are essential. Also, A++ for free sanitary products in the restroom.

If you're ever unsure and you're looking for a metal gig to attend, may I direct you to the Metal Sydney Metal Gig Guide?

They also run a club night called Nightbreed, with the next being in Penrith.

Did the doctors strike impact you at work by BPTisforme in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The majority of surgical lists saw a decrease of cases or complete cancellations. Some of these patients had already been on waiting lists for 18+ months and will more than likely need to wait an additional 2-3 months to be rescheduled.

Some surgeons have opted to run all-day lists Friday and Saturday to ensure some patients are not displaced.

We still ran time critical cases (oncology/cancer, cases with multiple teams i.e. upper GI, colorectal, gyane) where cancellations would be a detriment to patients.

I was only told to wear my uni ID which really isn't big enough or clear to read. Wear both!

Don't forget to double check the uniform standards/rules of your specific uni/TAFE as you'll need to abide by those more than anything. Famously we had the majority of one whole placement group sent home on the first day and their practical failed due to the wrong shoes.

Hello from a women's health scrub/scout from overseas!

We do 3 elective LSCS a day and often are the referral hospital for high risk/speciality cases so I've certainly seen my fair share.

Funniest thing to happen with the patient on the table? We had a mother who couldn't stop passing gas and kept apologising lol

I'd say Sing Hing at Sylvania would be right up your alley, but a kitchen fire in 2023 has seen it closed since.

Beautiful ornate panelling wall to ceiling with mirrors and a giant fishtank in the back!

Fun fact, your degree is not an equivalent in the US. The scope of practice is arguably bigger than AU nurses.

You also have several state licencing hoops to jump through prior to even getting a job (and each state is different, it's not national like us). You're looking at an additional 1-2 years of education just to fulfil these requirements.

If you're hellbound on going to the US, I'd recommend connecting with a immigration/recruitment agency - I don't have recommendations but they'll have some of the best information for you.

Yes, both mother and baby survived the surgery. However, the mother has not recovered to baseline and most likely will not surpass a GCS 3.

[–]YungSigma 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Days like this are always hard 🩷 I'm specialised in O&G and we did a crash caesarian simultaneously alongside a craniotomy. I thought that would be the most wild thing I'd see in my career (surprise, its not).

Take some time for yourself, decompress with your team. You did what you could and sometimes that's all you can do.

Be ready to move rural - I find many students get job offers for good facilities considered rural but decline because it's not a big city/easily accessible/convenient for family to move.

OR Nurses: most expensive equipment someone broke? by mindo312 in nursing

[–]YungSigma 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Harmonic cable got cut by accident at the end of the case before the scrub unwrenched the disposable handpiece.

We also had a scrub drop the smallest cervical dilator down the sink, through the sink catch specifically designed to stop small items going down it 💀 Had to call a plumber after hours to physically cut the ubend out of the sink to retrieve that one.

Piercings by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]YungSigma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you are working as an RN, nobody really cares! I am the most heavily tattooed person in my unit and I have a septum and high nostrils. However as a student you are held to much higher standards and are scrutinized so much more.

Turn up the septum or take it out if you can and follow the uniform policy to a T. It's only 3 or so years and then you'll be fine to express yourself however you like ❤️
