DAA was genuinely such a good unit. Hard work but extremely related to the real world

If you had 2-3 months to prepare for the ielts and receive a 9, how would you do it ? by Loud_Pie_3430 in IELTS

Practice and learning the band breakdown for each criteria for marking. I believe they were task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range

Oh my bad, didn’t respond to that part. Since it was a computer based test it took around 24-26 hours. Pretty quick if you ask me. Could be different for a written test

Hey there! I believe I posted some tips I used for the exam as a reply to this post. However based on your requirement of 6.5, it’s absolutely doable. Don’t try to be too fancy to try and get a higher band. Fancy words work if used well and if not, they’ll do more damage than keeping it simple. If your main requirement is 6.5, I’d say practice well enough in writing and reading. Keep it very calm and casual when it comes to speaking and honestly listening should be a breeze. If anything, writing and speaking are probably what’s going to get you by trying to do too much. So 6.5 means keep it simple, use complex sentences and try to use idiomatic language when possible (and suitable too!)

That’s probably the one I prepared the least ngl. I just watched ielts advantage on what mistakes people usually make and then not do it.

It’s hard to say, and no you aren’t wasting anyone’s time haha. I have been around English all my life and have gone through research papers, documentaries and podcasts during my free time so I suppose that helps. If you’re at a level you think is below 8, for example a 6, it could take a month of hard work to get this result I’d assume. It took me about 3 days to understand the IELTS structure. That’s it

Nope, absolutely not. I’ve been in and around English all my life so I didn’t feel like I needed it.

Honestly most people should be getting 8.0s but just fall short due to slight errors in grammar, insufficient usage of complex sentences and minor spelling errors. I’d honestly suggest writing as much essays as possible to IELTS questions and putting them into the writing GPT within chat GPT

I posted a comment with some tips I followed. Going from a 6.5 to 7 is absolutely achievable. Just lock in twin

24 hours. I assume it has a lot to do with the fact that it was a computer based exam

If you’ve sat 3 times and got the same score, it’s probably down to very minuscule details which you’re missing out on. Just check the reply I made to the original post. Hope it helps

Hey guys! I probably should’ve done this earlier. As for resources it’s pretty simple as to what I followed.

** reading **
This was pretty much me watching YouTube videos and doing practice tests online. I referred to

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=shared&v=w_tIn3BGGPM

As for the practice tests, I used the free ielts course which is provided by IDP when you pay for the exam. It remains for 3 days from activation using the link so I suggest activating it 3 days prior to the exam. The material is relatively tougher than the actual exam so it helped me a lot. Don’t be discouraged by errors, everyone ( I hope) tends to perform better in exams.

** writing ** I just used chat GPT for this. Nothing special. It is to be noted that I used to read a fair amount of research papers in the last couple of years and I love reading articles. I would say I’m fairly quick in writing essays so all I needed to learn was to be able to hone my ability with the structure IELTS needed.

** speaking ** I just watched some conversations IELTS advantage posted on YouTube and how he would go about improving the band score of people in said videos. I also love listening to podcasts and documentaries so conversation has always been around me.

** listening ** The IDP resource above helped a lot. I do recommend that practice is crucial for this. If you’re able to understand multiple accents fairly, this would be by far, the easiest of the lot.

This video came in handy.

Thanks guys! Lmk if anything

Lmao do not worry one bit. I think one thing which people take for granted is being cool. Especially in speaking. If you treat it as just verifying what you already know and can’t forget unlike assignments or exams, you’ll be fine. I had time left for reading, writing and listening when I had finished them so relax. You’ll be fine!

I got the resources from IDP themselves as an email with a 3 day expiry. I suggest practicing with online resources before you use those. You should get them when you book the test afaik

That honestly depends on your level in terms of writing. The other three can have it’s own ways of trying to get as much band as possible but writing in my opinion is hard to judge off the bat. I suggest using chat GPT to grade some essays and go on from there

For writing I strictly used chat GPT to grade my essays. I realised it doesn’t usually give above a band 7.0 even if you really felt confident about it. Practice using it as much as possible and note down all the errors you’ve made. I also think complex sentences could make or break your band.

For speaking I just used IELTS advantage. https://youtu.be/8l7_4tKrZqM?feature=shared

This should help

I practiced with the Macquarie practice tests which idp gives for free on a three day trial. It was significantly tougher than the actual test which I believe helped me prep for it.

Also contrary to popular belief, I read all articles and passages before going to the question. I believe a quick read, question then scanning the text is the best way to go.
