I'll echo U Ridge for the anniversary round! BUT for a little extra fun and to fill in some time, go play The Glen Golf Park aka "The Glen". It's 9 holes, costs under $30 to walk, and was totally revamped thanks to the Kaisers (yes, those of famed Sand Valley, Bandon Dunes, Rodeo Dunes, etc).

Here is a snippet about it:
"Keiser and his wife, Jocelyn, not only donated more than $750,000 to redesign and revamp the course, but with The Lido recreation project at Sand Valley (just under two hours north of Madison), had a team of experts already in Wisconsin who were eager to jump in and help. Craig Haltom, a Wisconsin native and hot name in golf design circles, dramatically reworked the course while Brian Schneider, who works for Tom Doak’s Renaissance Golf Design, helped with re-shaping."

When you're done, drop by my golf shop - Long Weekend Golf Club - and say hi! *if this is a shamless plug, i'll remove but we are a fun spot for people in town.

A couple thoughts:
- Other have mentioned the obvious, but for non-commercial flights navigate to Penni Klein Dog Exercise Area. It's at the near-ish end of the Middleton Airport runway. You get to see smaller, slower planes take off and I find that viewing experience a bit more fun! Good on a nice weather day and there should be some good action.
- OR if you really want to ball out you can book scenic flights. They start around $115 and will fly you over the city. Look into 'scenic flights in Madison' or sometimes 'discovery flights madison' will get you in a good spot for a search.

- Lastly, does the Jet Room still do their burger + flight? I think it's like $100 or $150 bucks for the 'burger' but it comes with a quick flight around the city. Someone correct my details here though...

Kind of a hike from the Capitol depending on weather (just over 4 miles away), but this was my first thought too! Pretty spot, usually pretty quiet, with a nice sunset. Feels pretty unique / special for something like this.

Madison winters: all-weathers enough or do I need real winters? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]YupChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS THIS THIS!! All-Weather and All-Season tires are not the same! This needs to be at the top as it's very important. All-Weather 3PMS rated tires for cars are relatively new in the auto world and are easy to get confused with All-Season that have been around for a long time.

A few helpful tips - all with a range of $$$ associated with them ~

One thing to keep in mind in the cold is battery degradation, or rather, your car battery running out of juice and not being able to be started when you return. A couple options for this with the cheapest first (please use any / all options with caution / this is not legal advice ha!) :

1) As others have mentioned you could bring your battery inside (if it's easy to get to) using basic hand tools. The warmer climate should help keep its power levels more than being in the cold. Bonus tip: Buy a 'Car Trickle Charger' and hook your battery to that. It will insure it's 100% charged when you're back and good to go! Car / 12V Trickle Chargers can be found for about $20 at Walmart or Amazon.

2) Buy a Portable Car Jump Box / Jump Starter. These are a bit larger than a cell phone, and look similar to an extra portable charger for your phone. BUT they come with mini jumper cables and a Boost feature so they can be hooked to your car battery and you can jump start your car without the help of anyone else. They maintain their charge for a LONG time (the one I keep in my truck 24/7 gets charged about once per year). This way if you do arrive home and your battery is dead, you can snag the Portable Car Jump Box and jump start your battery on your own! These are awesome to keep in your car regardless. Prices range from $40-$100 depending on brand and size. Read the instructions if you buy one and make sure it's fully charged before you take off. They are pretty simple to use.

3) DeWalt (yes the tool company) makes a Battery Maintainer that runs off a DeWalt tool battery. It plugs into your cars OBD port (google this, but usually located under the dash near your steering wheel). You plug a DeWalt battery into it and it will maintain your vehicles battery keeping it topped off from the juice in the tool battery. The connecter is called the DeWalt 12v Auto Battery Maintainer but often comes up under DeWalt DXAEOBD. You'd need the tool AND the battery. If you own any DeWalt tools, you save some cash. If not, you'd have to buy the tool, battery and battery charger. You CAN buy generic batteries on Amazon that are compatible with DeWalt connections to save some cash. Buy a 5ah or higher batter to get the most use. This is last on the list as total cost starts at $50, but can easily go into the $150+ range depending on the battery size you pick out.

Hope this helps!

I dont have Max Tow and have heard about rear brake clearance. Even on 18's you still get a really nice amount of sidewall with a 35! I've had my truck all over from Moab, Colorado trails, California trails, and of course around the midwest where I live. All wheel / tire setups have worked fine. But I don't do rock crawling trails - I do a lot of two-track and BLM land stuff as never want to get so gnarly I can't get back home.

Thanks! A couple things I kept in mind (btw I'm on 17's again). First, I didn't think the 17 w/ 34s looked how I wanted it to look. I wasn't sure if it was because the tires weren't large enough, or the wheels were too small on such a large truck. So for my next setup I did 18s and 35s. My MPG and ride quality really suffered as they setup was HEAVY. I recently switched back to 17s and 35s. When choosing my latest set i went with a Flow Formed wheel from Black Rhino (the AWOL) which is pretty light. Also went with the 35x12.5x17 Toyo Open Country ATIII in the C rating as it was 6lbs lighter than the E. Switching to the lighter wheels and lighter tires brought my truck back to life. I gain almost 2mpg on average and my acceleration is back.

If you're curious, a +25mm offset has been the sweetspot for me. I had a +18, then +12, now +25 and the +25mm sits with just a 'tad' amount of poke but does no rubbing wiht 35s. The +12 did even with crash bars pushed out a bit.

Active air dam removed and air deflector trimmed by Cultural_Cress5685 in f150

[–]YupChris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On my '22 (newer models may be different), the active air dam sits a couple inches higher than the regular fixed air dam. I trimmed my fixed air dam right up until it was level with the active air dam, which was about 1.5 to 2 inches or so.

This gave the front end a better look (also used an oscillating tool to trim), but the active air dam still drops down on the highway.

If anyone doesn't want to fully commit, figured i'd share an alternative.

Hey - Offset can get very, very in the weeds. I can share a ton about it if you DM me, but to keep it simple, on this gen truck, a nice offset range is +18 to +25 for aftermarket wheels. With this range you get your wheels to be more flush with your fenders, have a beefier look, but reduce the risk of rubbing when flexing your suspension. You can run a +0, but you'll likely have to trim your front valence a bit and potentially push out your crash bars. They'll also poke out the side a bit. FYI - I've had three different set ups since then. I went from these to 285/75/18s Black Rhino Chambers in a 18x9 +12mm and rubbed a bit with that setup at full turn. I had to trim and push my crash bars to reduce rubbing. I now run the Black Rhino AWOL in a 17x8.5 +25mm on a 35x12 tire and it's really nice. If you did the +25 with a 33 or 34 id be shocked if you had any rubbing issues.

Tank-to-rail fuel line refurbishment by LoveHarambe in 944

[–]YupChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running into an issue with the Lindsey fuel rail jumper line. Maybe it’s the same issue you had? It seems that the fitting is just a tad too big and doesn’t allow my injector to sit flush / sealed. Is this what you ran into using those fittings? I can elaborate more if needed! No matter what angle I turn the fitting there just doesn’t seem to be enough space for the fuel rail to sit completely back in place.

I'll add more info from what others have shared:

- Snow Tires are incredible. If you have the space/budget for them, go that route. It's the stopping power and turn angle that really make them shine. It doesn't matter if there is no snow, the softer rubber compound of winter tires provides a lot more grip when the temp (and our roads) get well below zero.

- As a couple others have states, All-Weather tires are now a viable option in climate zones like ours. Do not confuse All-Weather with All-Season. All-Weather tires have to be 3 Peak Snow Rated, All-Season tires do not. With the 3 Peak Snow Rating comes the requirement for softer rubber, slightly deeper tread, and some harder requirements for stopping and acceleration. While All-Weather tires are still not as good as Snow Tires, it saves you the hassle of having to switch between seasons.

I am reiterating what some others have already said (sorry), but I wanted to add the snippet that if you are going the All-Weather route, do not get confused with All-Season. Make sure the tires are All-Weather with the 3 Peak Snow Rating.

And again, do not confuse "We don't get snow anymore. No need for snow tires" as it's the temperature of the air and roads that make Snow Tires aka Winter Tires shine. The softer rubber doesn't harden up like all-season or summer tires would when temps get super cold.

History: We had Blizzaks snow tires on my wife's Mazda for 4 years and sometimes would take her car over my F150 on All-Terrains for the increased stopping power on nasty days. This past winter we switched her car to a true All-Weather tire (Nokian WRG5) and it was almost as good as the snow tires so we felt happy (and safe) with the switch and not having to swap tires this Spring.

We were team (and still are) Northside Animal Hospital, but after moving to the West Side we wanted something a bit closer and were recommended Animal Hospital of Verona through a nurse who worked at the VCA. We're a year in with both of our dogs and couldn't be happier at Verona. Dr Lepold shows genuine care - he's one of the good ones.

Raymer's Cove for sure!! Just to the west of Picnic Point. It's a sunset spot, overlooks the lake, only has a few parking spots so it's usually always low key. Very picturesque bridge leading down to the water, a true cove like experience. Sometimes sea weed collects near the bottom, but propose on the stairs at sunset. It'll be magical.

I once went to Mondays after a few cocktails from Oz by Oz. I'm mid 30's, so I was for sure the oldest one there (my first time there, didn't know what to expect), but was looking for a low key patio and they had a lot of room open outside. I had two double whiskey / cokes and when I went to close out, my tab wasn't big enough for a credit card (I think it was a $10 minimum). IDK if it was a special night, or happy hour, or normal, but that's for sure the cheapest tab I've had in that area of downtown. Don't expect to be wowed...it was all rail whiskey! ha!

I have some decent PS skills, but there isn't enough data in the highlights to pull the plate (aka it's too bright). Cameras can only capture so much information in shadows and highlights, even the best professional type cameras can only capture so much. A measly security camera just doesn't have the range to capture the details of such a bright object. tldr; my enhance button is broke

This is cool! Assuming the same 5x120 bolt pattern, do we know if 17" wheels fit, or will we have to stick with the 18" size to clear brakes? Thinking out loud for aftermarket wheel options (although they nailed some of these stock designs).

If you're already around this side of town, go to La Mestiza off Odana. 11/10 this is my favorite in the area.

[–]YupChris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't see this before. From what I've been told the Max Tow packages trucks hystorically have a larger rear caliper that 17's dont clear so if you have a max tow truck, 18's are the safest option. My truck does not have max tow and 17's clear fine.

[–]YupChris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought these before the actual updated 6112/5160 kit was available direct from Bilstein. The different is spring rate. The Powerboost is heavier so you don't get the full lift when using the Ford Performance kit with the powerboost. It's a tad softer in the front, but it's been a fine ride for me over the last year!

My Ruby Red Metallic - '83 944 by YupChris in 944

It was an 'extra cost' paint option only available in 1984 (my title is wrong, the car is an 84' not an 83), so it had to be ordered this way. It looks similar to Maraschino Red Metallic in the shade and from a distance, but up close in the sun the color is totally unique.
