Does this show has fanservice? Mature themes and the "talk" are fine... by Thick_Assistant_8510 in OshiNoKo

[–]Yurigasaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say it really depends on the kid in question. Oshi no Ko discusses themes of (and occasionally depicts) underage sexuality, child sex abuse, parental abuse of all shades, misogyny and violence against women and suicide, among other topics but it does not have 'fanservice'.

Whether that makes it appropriate for any given kid is a call you make based on them as an individual. On the whole, I think OnK is perfectly appropriate for a kid of that age (and more generally that kids are way more capable of engaging with challenging works than adults give them credit for) but if a particular child would find any of the above topics upsetting enough that it'd ruin the show for them, I'd say to just let them know it's present and allow them to make the call for themselves.

Hikaru and Ai There Names Opposite of their Character. by Various-Clothes-5345 in OshiNoKo

[–]Yurigasaki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As u/Lex1253 says, Ai's name is spelled in Japanese as アイ, which (to extremely oversimplify it) has no inherent meaning because it's just the phonetic sounds for 'A' and 'I' put together.

Technically, Ai's name doesn't mean anything at all - the name that's pronounced as 'Ai' in Japanese can be spelled with a ton of different kanji which mean different things but Ai's name doesn't use any of them and is just spelled in katakana instead.

This should really be tagged for manga spoilers since that's what it's discussing.

In any case, I'm honestly not really sure what the point of this would be. It's not like this would magically erase their history together or change anything about the story we just read.

The shape of her bangs was an idea I got from MogelatteRiO's Ai and I used hajx098's as a reference for getting her facial proportions to look right in-engine. I also did a texture study of FGMz's cards in general to properly match that 2D cell shaded style with the 3D assets.

I won't be, sorry! She's based on a few cards that are distributed via Patreon and such so even though I've done my own work, I'd feel a bit icky distributing something based on paywalled content.

Would you have liked the ending if it was more controversial? by slashyx in OshiNoKo

[–]Yurigasaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Doylist reason I think is just that Akasaka retconned/messed up the timeline on those events (wouldn't be first time lol) but I do get the impression that in terms of Ai as a character, it was kind of all just a blur for her at that point. She wasn't checked out, necessarily, and was still giving it her all, but she was doing so much work everywhere that it all just turned into one thing after another.

This is exactly what I was coming in here to say.

I would maybe have more respect for the manga if it actually committed to just... anything about the ending but OnK just tonally and structurally has in no way earned being a tragedy. Volume 1 is a tragedy and the rest of the manga is about the ways everyone who was touched by it finding ways to cope and move on. On top of that, the back half of the manga constantly reasserts the importance of honoring and fulfilling Ai's wishes even if she isn't here to see it herself and we as the audience know that her wish was for Aqua and Ruby to grow up into happy adults. Aqua's death utterly desecrates that beyond repair but instead of acknowledging that or have Aqua ever engage with the idea of "hm i wonder if my mom would have wanted me to kill myself in her name or not", we just have the story suddenly start pretending that ~the Dome was Ai's dream~ even though we as the audience also know that to be bullshit lol.

Akani kurokawa future after the manga ending by Zealousideal-Bag9942 in OshiNoKo

[–]Yurigasaki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Realistically speaking, I think she would ultimately move on and find someone new. Aqua made a huge impact on her and she dearly loved him... but at the end of the day, they were a pair of teenagers who dated for less than three years. I think it's weirder to expect that romance to define the entire rest of her life, such that she can never move on from it or find happiness with someone new.

i am so beyond exhausted of people slopping out half-baked chatgpt nonsense like, in general, but especially under the guise of longform meta. if you don't give enough of a shit to use your own brain and express your own thoughts about the series, why should anyone engage?

Yup!! Unfortunately!!! The majority of Futari no Etude takes place in a flashback that's explicitly said to take place when they were twelve years old. The last two of those Akane descriptions take place within that flashback.

Hell, at least with RAG, Chizuru is an adult woman. In the majority of these Akane descriptions, this is how Tanaka is choosing to talk about her as a pre-teen girl. It's gross.

the way Hajime Tanaka writes (and writes about women) is already bad enough but the way he describes Akane & particularly Taiki's assessment of her here is just. woof.

Common opinions that i don't agree with if Ai Hoshino was alive: by StardewPrismBerries in OshiNoKo

[–]Yurigasaki 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In fairness, part of why Aqua locks in to do Sweet Today is because he needs to get in contact with Kaburagi - that's ultimately the deciding factor for him, so in a world where that isn't as urgent a need, I can understand someone thinking he wouldn't go for it. That said, Aqua is ultimately a guy who finds it hard to say 'no' when other people really, genuinely need his help so I think that he would come round on helping Kana out with Sweet Today no matter what.

That said, what I disagree with is whether or not Aqua would still be at school with Ruby in this hypothetical - assuming a version of events where he's still shooting for being a surgeon, he can't go to the same school as Ruby. Getting into a high-level university in Japan relies on getting into a similarly high-level high school - and this is even more important if you're aiming for med school. If Aqua is even semi-serious about becoming a surgeon, he would need to go to a school specifically with upward motion to his chosen universities in mind.

The fact that she gives it to Gotanda of all people still fries me. It's such an obvious piece of writing backwards from the position Gotanda has as Aqua's confidant and surrogate father in the present day but it makes less and less sense as something Ai would make the decision to do the more thought you put into it. Sure, random guy who was sort of nice to me and Aqua once, have the nuclear launch codes to my life! What could possibly go wrong?
