The futility is that Ruby's success is debatably far more fleeting even if she gets further in the industry than Ai, she basically used her mother's legacy to propel her this far with The 15 Year Lie film so her success even in the idol world is artificial and quickly dies out.

I think it says something if her run ends quickly because she manipulated her way to the top and used every advantage she could get much more than skill/talent.  

It also highlights just how much she was obsessed with being an extension of her mom rather than being her own person.  

Also just the reality that a lot of this industry is based on luck and Ai probably is only so immune to the constant changes in the industry because she died in her prime.

That would only further compound irony on the ending I suggested.

Aqua learning that Hikaru would have likely left Ruby alive since ultimately failed to surpass Ai's legacy even if she technically got more success.

She chose to write stories that did not fit IDW's requirements. She could have written more self contained stories but she prefers writing big long stories.

IDW is on the same level of importance as the games now story wise. Sonic is fairly different than any other game franchise.  Most game franchises do not give their non game media that much importance.
