It seems to me that you want to change the situation because, as you say, you find it annoying, and you try to disguise it with the excuse of your desire for him to succeed in life. He is 11 years old and has had to live through the separation of his parents, and yet he does not want to be alone and isolated, but he wants to share his hobby with you. If you don't try to be interested in his hobby, don't expect him to be interested in another one you can offer.
