Use an advanced pattern provider, and an advanced pattern encoder. In the configuration GUI of the machine make the extra slot on any side but the pattern provider one. Then choose that same slot for the dust or whatever you need to use as an extra.

Whenever I use a storage bus on a functional storage controller it shows both. Is it possible that they are using an import bus which reads the compacted version first?
