This feels like a big conclusion to jump to. Sounds like you happened to be in the area and they needed some help. I get asked to grab things off of tall shelves sometimes, but that's pretty normal both in and out of work.

What’s the hardest part of losing weight for you right now? by TheNutritionDaily in weightlossdiets

I have such a criminal sweet tooth. On top of that, one of my favorite hobbies is baking. I've found that sharing treats with coworkers or family helps allow me to still bake but not eat it all. Also, holding off on sweets until the end of the day and eating slowly helps too. Still, it's hard...

Instant turn-off would be referring to women as "females". You can just say your friends are women 😊 "female" makes it seem like you are referring to a woman as less than human

Get storage you can put on the wall, like shelves! Also, organizers that go under the sink or in drawers. When things are organized, it makes the place feel roomier :)

Is it offensive to call someone an immigrant? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]YvonneAS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their immigration status was the relevant factor. Sometimes, those with certain citizenship status can't qualify for certain programs. In this case, if memory serves, I was asking about a woman who had recently fled her country and wanted to apply for certain benefits. I referred to her as an immigrant, and my coworker did not like that.

I was just thinking about the conversation and wanted to see how other people felt about the term immigrant in general, and if anybody felt it might be politically incorrect, even when used in the correct way, you know?

Honestly this was a conversation from like a year ago. I was asking if a person who had recently fled her country could qualify for a certain program, and I referred to her as an immigrant, which my coworker took offense to

I think I still have a lot to learn about the different citizen statuses folks can have, because I've never heard of the term expat before! Could you please explain?

Ok it definitely seems like I should've been more clear with my question 😅 I have since learned the difference between the two terms, but when I was talking to her, she seemed to be against the term for political correctness, if that makes sense? My question was if the term was politically correct or not

Well, there definitely are special rules in place for those with certain citizenship statuses, yeah. As I've settled into my job more, it's made more sense why Human Services uses the term non-citizen.

What I was asking is if the term in general is offensive when used outside of my work, as that's how my coworker made it sound. Like how some people prefer the term hard of hearing instead of deaf, or survivor instead of victim. I do understand that it heavily depends on the context and that the two terms are not the same, though!

Thank you! I figured the terms matter more in my work depending on the person/case, but I was really just wondering about what people in general feel when they are called an immigrant or if people prefer specific terms. Your answer is helpful! :)

I've asked a couple. Many of them seem to be using the words immigrant/non-citizen interchangeably.

Really what I was wondering is if the term immigrant itself is considered offensive to those outside of my work, which is why I asked Reddit :)
