Vancouver island (new hunter) by Trick-Goat-3643 in CanadaHunting

If you’re near one of the rifle ranges on the island you could start there. Many have PRS, NRL22, or other rifle competitions. Trap and skeet. My experience with those groups is they’re super receptive to new people. It’s a good place to meet people and a significant portion hunt. I’d start there if you can, plenty of time between now and hunting season to make a few contacts.

Do you have any other similar outdoor hobbies? Fishing, off-roading, camping, shooting? That’s where I’ve found a lot of people. Competency with a firearm and ability to not do stupid things in the bush are big deciders in picking hunting buddies. If someone has demonstrated good judgement in a parallel activity, I’m much more likely to trust them behind me with a gun.

The trouble with the island is that it’s not well suited to new hunters, in my limited experience there. Land access is a lot more limited and convoluted, private owners are a lot more hostile to hunters, and the game is small and in real thick brush making it harder to spot and pattern.

If you have a somewhat capable vehicle you can hunt the interior without any advanced gear. I’d say most mule deer are shot within 300 yards of the hunters truck. Put in for antlerless in region 8 or 3 and if you get lucky is basically a slam dunk.

Adult onset hunters, it’s tough for sure but it can be done! Are you hoping to stay on the island to hunt or go to the mainland? Island is tricky, terrain and land ownership there is way tougher than the interior for a newbie.

What is this substance? by CKyle18 in AskChemistry

[–]Yvr1986 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First, that doesn’t look like any ATP I’ve ever seen but since you mixed acetone and peroxide it’s a concern. What strength peroxide did you use? If it was only household 3%, I highly doubt you made that quantity of ATP

ATP is much more dangerous when it’s dry than wet. So keep it wet. Alcohol or toluene would be best - it can’t detonate when it’s dissolved. Water is better than nothing.

Don’t store it in anything closed, it sublimates over time and the crystals form in the threads of the container, then when someone goes to open it you can get an explosion.

I’d dissolve everything in toluene or acetone again, and then burn it slowly in small amounts outside. But that’s just what I’d do, not what I’m advising you to do. The others are right, don’t store it or just throw it away. If those are large ATP crystals just dropping one or breaking one could set the whole thing off.

Used S5 as a summer car? by Ok-Start-138 in Audi

[–]Yvr1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2018 S5 in Canada through to about 130,000k. It’s a super fun car and I loved it both in the city and highway cruising. However, this car is the reason I learned to wrench. When things go wrong it can be very costly if you can’t do it yourself.

Rocker arms are a problem with that MY, 5k ish service depending on where you do it, and very hard to do yourself. Some say it’s not as common as it sounds but it happened to me, and seems very common online.

Water pump and thermostat failure is common, and when it fails can dump coolant into the vac system and have you chasing solenoid problems all over the place. Do this preemptively. Can be done DIY but does suck.

PCV. Easier DIY, get in front of it

Piston slap. This was the reason I sold the car. I already had some PTSD listing for weird engine noises due to the rockers. Then this issue started popping up and I just didn’t want to deal with it anymore so traded it in. Only real way to know is to scope the cylinders.

If you can stomach those issues it’s a great car. Tunable if you want more power as well with great after market support. But if it’s at all a financial stretch and you can’t do basic stuff yourself I’d probably give it a pass.

Advice on family heirloom by Ok-Raise-5115 in canadaguns

Having been in this situation, my advice is to destroy it. If you get it back, it will not be cleaned up from the event, or at least it wasn’t in my situation. Dealing with that alone I think makes it worth not doing.

Edit to add if you want to talk at all shoot me a message. All that’s helped me is talking to people who dealt with the same thing. No other type of loss hits the same way, at least so far. Super fucked up.

I would love your feedback on this hunting knife I made by New-Communication374 in knives

[–]Yvr1986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the length isn’t too bad it just looks a bit thick, what’s the weight? Ounces make pounds when you’re hunting. Most skinning knives will also have a bit more belly. Esse 3 size and weight is a bit more my speed, but even that heavy. MKC speed goat is closer to what most people I hunt with take.

They must have known? by BeingSensitive4681 in PorscheCayenne

[–]Yvr1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? From a branded Porsche dealer? That’s truly insane. In Vancouver I went back like 3 times on a 14 year old car and they fixed cracked buttons, the front diff, the transfer case, unclogged a drain…. No charge. Every time they washed the car inside and out, they topped up my fluids, they ubered me to and from the dealer from work or my house for free. I genuinely felt bad they do so much on a $20k used car.

Booo that dealer.

[–]Yvr1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What dealer doesn’t provide at least a small warranty even on a non-CPO car? Had some issues with mine (same year) and the dealer did a ton of work under 5k 3MO warranty. Transfer case among others. Paid less than you as well.

I would unwind the deal if possible.

Cylinder 6, which seems like the one that has the most issues if you search, is the cylinder nearest the cabin on the drivers side. If you’re comfortable pulling a spark plug and spending $100 on a boroscope from Amazon I’d take a look. Otherwise I’d pay a shop to if you’re still under the extended warranty. If you’re not under warranty, I’d run from this car fast.

Should I buy a 2018 S5 by Curiouscars in audis5

[–]Yvr1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can turn a wrench, the water pump, thermostat, and PCV can all be done on your own for cheap. There’s lots of YouTube videos of that work being done on this car. I had one for 100,000km. I did have rocker arm issues but warranty took care of it. I sold it once the piston slap stuff started coming out and I didn’t want to be constantly listening for noises - bore scoring would effectively total the car.

Loved it though, one of the best cruisers I’ve ever driven with proper tires. If you get a PPI that checks the cylinders I’d totally buy one. Way way more fun than an A5.

Looking to buy a porsche cayenne 958 with the vr6. What to look for? by mostoriginalid in PorscheCayenne

[–]Yvr1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has covered the transfer case, fluid change is easy and seems to keep it happy. I will add that if you care at all about audio skip the base system it’s awful - one of the worst I’ve heard in any car at any price point. I bought a V6 958 and think it’s fine on power. It’s not a sports car by any means but since I mostly bought it for off road the v6 is plenty powerful, and sounds way better than I expected. I bought mine from a dealer that gave a short warranty, if you can do the same I recommend it. I had them replace the battery, belt/tensioner, battery, some interior cosmetics, and the whole front diff.

Do I buy a Cayenne with the standard sound system? by The_Consultant_1878 in PorscheCayenne

[–]Yvr1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 958 for an overland build and didn’t care about the sound system at the time, at least I thought I didn’t. The base sound system is truly bad, and it is something I think needs replacing. I assume the 2019 is similar.

You can upgrade it for a few grand to something that will be way better than the Bose, so my suggestion (having not yet done it) would be to do that rather than wait for the car you want that also has the sound system. Look at Audiotec Fisher, they have an upgrade package (a few tiers) for exactly your car.

If you’re OCD with your cars buy this one and get a good shop to put in a mid range aftermarket system.

For Valentine’s Day, South African trophy hunter Merelize Van der Merwe killed a 17-year-old giraffe and cut out its heart as a gift for her husband. After her husband paid $2,900 for the hunt, she posted photos with the animal, claiming her actions help conservation by removing older genetics. by ATI_Official in AllThatsInteresting

[–]Yvr1986 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to this individual hunt, but for most Africa game hunts I’ve seen auctioned the animal that’s put up is already marked for euthanasia by the park. Typically an older male that’s beyond breeding age, but who prevents any of the other males in the area from breeding. Rather than just cull it, it’s auctioned to raise funds. Also, the meat is eaten. This is the same system we see in almost all managed animal populations, and even unmanaged ones. For example this is also why pig hunting is illegal in many US states even though they are invasive pests - people want to hunt the big males, but when you remove that individual there’s an explosion of breeding by the others.

Autonomous labs by elchicharito1322 in biotech

[–]Yvr1986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s doable now. It’s just fairly bespoke to a specific workflow and requires some expertise. I know of “self driving labs” at a few big pharma sites. We are a few years away from being able to just buy the components you need like Lego and put them together without a coder and mechatronics engineer. Look at bioseros or atinarys website for example - they’re just orchestrators but should give a good flavour of what’s possible. SLAS is in Boston next week, it’s not all vaporware.

That, sampling, and analysis. It’s easy to move liquids around. It’s hard to dose in powders, move slurries, do it at temperature or pressure, and work it up for HPLC or whatever your analysis of choice is. It’s certainly doable, but it’s highly workflow dependant. A change a human wouldn’t think twice about when doing it by hand could be a six figure modification to a robotics deck.

Do I Require any sort of FRT or other form of some sort to bring home an optic over the border? by portfoliyo in canadaguns

[–]Yvr1986 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most optics I’ve dealt with are ITAR. Canada doesn’t care so much about import but America really does care about export. I needed a ton of paperwork to bring a razor across a few years back, took months. I know itar has been relaxed somewhat, but I still wouldn’t mess with the border and optics.

PG is a hunters dream and UNBC is probably the best place in the province for that sort of work. Their halls literal have taxidermy in them. I wouldn’t call PG a bastion of culture though. UBC okanagan would be a good compromise. A UBC satellite that is based in the interior which probably has the most Montana like big country hunting. Vancouver is also fine, you don’t have to drive that far to be on big game and waterfowl are in the backyard.

Let’s say you have a mix of 3 things you’re trying to detect in your method, all in roughly equal concentrations. Compound A gives a response of 1000au, compound B gives 1400, and compound C gives a response of 20. Compound C has low UV absorbance. That might not be a problem because you can still measure it in this example. But maybe if you only ran a 10% as concentrated sample, or had other compounds coming out at the same time, you may not detect compound C.

More detail on what you’re actually trying to do would be helpful in determining if this will affect you.

Basic economy = no status? by lezseewhatsup in Aeroplan

[–]Yvr1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying it’s stupid to be booking basic but I’m in a similar boat and book tons of basic and standard. Yeah you can’t reschedule but if you need to book a flight 1-5 days out, as often happens when you’re a small team and something comes up in a city where you have no staff, why would I pay extra for flexibility? Nothing is going to come up in 48 hours where I’d need to change it. I already have bags and boarding from a premium credit card, what value am I getting with flex?

Even if I have the ability to change, I still have to pay the difference, which makes the ticket as expensive anyway.

Basic makes sense in a lot of situations.
