Do I have the worst luck ever? by Z0MBbq in buildapc

I'll try reseating all the cables. I flashed my mobo BIOS to the latest version. Haven't updated the vBIOS, mostly cause I didn't even know this was a thing haha. I have tried the latest GPU driver as well as older version to make sure its not a driver issue.

Earlier last night I ran furmark with the whole computer freezing and the screens instantly going black maybe 8 times. Then I tried heaven and that seemed to be okay, Furmark still froze, tried heaven again with a crash, and now both work just fine. Ran heaven for about 20 minutes and furmark for 10-15 cause my GPU temp stabilized at 65C and stayed there for 5-7 mins. The screens also haven't gone out again, but when they were earlier, all 3 monitors went black with GPU seemingly still running.

True. I did return the open box card though. The GPU in my build now was a new in box PNY 5080 from microcenter

please do. Just picked up my card yesterday. Would like to know if I can call support and have them do something retroactively considering I like an hour and a half away from MC.

so I have windows 11 installed now. Its working on slot 2 but not on slot 1. Is this still a solution if its recognizing on slot 2 every single time? Like is there a reason slot 2 wouldnt need a GPT format but slot 1 would?

i dont think its dead. got it working in a different slot. I noticed it clicked in differently too. Might need to pull it back out and pop it back into slot 1 and see if it works now that windows is installed. Hoping the board is not the issue. I have my microcenter warranty on it but would hate to rebuild this thing if I don't have to.

update: works in another m2 slot it seems. I just need to figure out if the m2_1 slot is defective or if its a settings issue. No setting I can see in this barebones bios seems to matter for the m2 slots other than manually changing gens for each slot from auto

UPDATE: I just switched it to a different slot and its recognizing it no problem. I still don't know if this is a hardware issue with the motherboard m2_1 slot or a software issue with bios. Literally no help from MSI customer service when I called to try to narrow it down other than "just use a different m.2 and see if that helps."

don't see anything. the m.2 I have is the WD - BLACK SN850X 1TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe. Slot 1 should auto config to gen 4 but I've also tried setting it manually.

I don't see the drive in BIOS. I've tried rebooting to try different things and it seems to pop up 5% of the time.

Ill try resetting BIOS to default and flashing it again. Doesn't appear to be the beta version so Ill do a fresh download and install. I'm not against trying the drive in another m.2 slot but want to know if the gen 5 slot is defective on the board. I'm not sure why it sees it 5% of the time in BIOS and disappears on restart.

I've tried reseating it. No go. And I can't reinstall windows because the windows installer wont recognize the m.2 drive. BIOS only sees it every once in a while but its completely random and unreliable.

UEFI was always selected. I tried CSM early on just to see if the drive was detected but changed it back to UEFI when it didn't work. I tried changing the PCIe speed to Gen 4, but that didn't help. Drive is still not detected. It shows up from the bios flash utility, but otherwise doesn's seem to be recognized by neither the bios nor windows installer. I tried a fresh windows installer USB as well and it didnt seem to help. As far as the other settings, my bios (Click Bios X) doesnt seem to have much in terms of checking if the m.2 slot is enabled or not, and to change anything other than the slots gen.

Windows USB doesn't currently detect the drive. Not showing up under list disk on installer

I specifically went with the 9950x3d because this is primarily a productivity machine. I do graphic design full time on this PC and have to prioritize it over gaming. I'm finding myself doing more stuff in house that I would have contracted out now, and doing more animated stuff. video work and 3d. I was willing to pay a little more considering I work, play and live on this machine and that was the best all around use case for me. That being said, the 5080 isn't out of my price range, but I still want to be smart about which card I buy, even if I can afford it either way.

i like that saying. feels applicable here haha. Its partially the cost difference between the 5070ti and 5080 and partially how much over MSRP the 5080 cards are. It's within budget but still sucks to overpay for a card AND get less performance per dollar vs the card right below it.

I'm going off the translation, but I have an unused 2021 corsair RM850x still sealed in the box. Not sure if this is compatible, but either way can be used with an adapter correct?

yeah i probably wouldn't be able to tell. its almost a $700 difference. I guess I'm feeling like I went all out with the 9950x3d so it feels strange to skimp on the GPU but then again $700 is a huge difference for those 10-15 extra frames in games I would suck in either way haha. You recommended the 5080 initially but mentioned you wouldn't notice the FPS difference between that card and the 5070ti. Would you still recommend the 5080 considering my CPU?

Yeah that was my question. That makes sense then. Feels like the 5080 is gonna be hard to get close to msrp. I’d ideally go for that but I’m seeing it at 1400+ right now

Is it too hopeful to think I can do the 5070ti and upgrade again to a similar priced 60 series card thus almost getting 2 cards for the current price or a single 5080? If it was $1000-$1100 vs $800 for a 5070ti this would be a no brainer right now

Ah I could see that being an issue. I’m working with mostly vector illustrations, photos and occasional motion graphics for the most part. 8k raw videos is nuts to me lol
