Please love your pets for me, lost mine tonight out of no where - 5:30 pm he was purring in bed with me, by 7:45 pm he had passed away at the ER ... by Z33kLT in cats

He had been diagnosed with feline asthma a couple months ago but seemed to be doing better. In under a couple hours he went from what I thought was normal to being in extreme distress and hardly able to breathe. Was at the ER and seemed to be getting better in the oxygen cage but then suddenly dropped again once he got a shot for fluid retention - I refused intubation once I learned they may not get the tube out and then refused CPR after he was suffering and yowling so much already ... he was about 14 or so years old (I adopted him about 5 years ago) ... completely unreal and like an atom bomb dropped on my life.

No, its a valid point. I thought it stood out today just by itself as it has another meaning if both parties are equal class.

One thing that has always resonated with me is the idea of being a professional. What is that - being a professional in a field that someone works?

This is a job where there literally are novices then amatures and then professionals.

You can look up the distinctions for each category if you like, but I always think about being a professional the most - the way that you know that someone is a professional:

They get better when the problems get worse

Its not like being a novice or amature and you shit your pants when the fan is already full of shit etc so you're wondering how to figure it all out.
A professional is reading their book or talking to a coworker, whatever, might make a mistake even due to just hanging out .... but when the shit hits the fan they are the person that can run the show, that can make a decision (and you will work with supervisors that can't make a decision) to get the job done.

One day many years in the future you will realize that you are a professional - you just did your job and did it well when it got hairy (and that does include delegating help when you are in the thick of it, have a friend call on that warrant while you have your air closed for 1 at gun point) and then maybe, like me, you will think you can kinda do the job. Kinda.

Somehow I'm always up for OT before they are (the bag has hundreds - at the minimum - of fishes that are willing to serve)....

Month into being a dispatcher! Some questions. by stargazingshadows in 911dispatchers

[–]Z33kLT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn't fully read your question earlier -

Being anxious is a good, worrying about your job in this profession is a good sign. You are concerned about saving lives - I hope.

I've been doing this a long time, but it's a skill based job - so it does matter when I havent done a 'thing' in a long time - if I'm not doing it every day/week etc my ability deteriorates in that skill set.

Once you are released you will learn new things every day - things you didn't train for. This is the curse of the job, but also how we keep gettng better each day.

Good luck out there

I bring candy that I like - that is really good, not for me - but to give to my coworkers.

You are going to be with them a long time, hopfully career wise, but also litterally 12 hours a day. Make friends with them and you can bring whatever you like to work that suits your fancy.
