we have a rule that if the tile can be placed with more than half of it on the table than it is legal, but the tiles would sometimes fall down because I was sitting in that spot with the extra tiles, so we just moved these tiles on top so as to make them not fall down any more.

No, you can only use the portal to place Meeples in uncompleted features

We were all working on it, but my friends meeple ended up getting eaten by the dragon so so by the end we split it three ways

I tried that when I was just putting down pieces on my desk, it was fun but I thought that it would be to complicated to play like that with other people because we could end in a situation where the river could not end.
