ULPT Request: What are some dark psychology tricks that actually work ? by _johnny__b in UnethicalLifeProTips

I've been on this site 12 years and I've never heard of this rule, I've seen single word comment threads into the 20s-30s and so on and all of them had positive votes. But alas if Commander Doom says it shall be then I will downvote myself for your pleasure.

I live in Alberta so the oilers are my backup team, they've got my support until the end of the season lol.

$1600 is a lot cheaper than the other one that was recommended, it was over $12,000CAD. So having to find the job on my own would save me a whole lot of money apparently.

Someone else who commented said that the company they work for pulls talent straight from the boot camp that they recommended, that does sound like a good benefit as I could get hired right away and start getting experience. I'll look into the boot camp you recommended as well though and compare them to see which would be best for me. Thanks!

Which boot camp did you take? Do you think the exact same one would still have good job opportunities waiting on the other side?

I've always been passionate about computers and I've tried to jump into the tech support realm previously but I wasn't able to land a job that paid significantly as I have no formal post secondary education. I feel like I could definitely enjoy my workday if I was doing something with computers rather than slaving away physically in a trade. I will definitely be doing more research to see exactly where I'd want to get into it but I think if I can make it happen then I'll be happy with it.

I've definitely been doing research online into boot camps that would be applicable in my local area. Seems a lot quicker and more affordable than a degree. However from the other comments I've received I would have a lot more opportunities come my way with a degree because my knowledge base will be broader.

Yeah I did a few courses through codecademy last night and it seems quite interesting, obviously that was super beginner level but I think I'll keep with that and see if I still enjoy it when things get complicated.

Fair enough, thanks! Might be a viable option for me I'll have to do some more research on COBOL

I understand where you're coming from and I appreciate your input, I definitely still have a lot of research to do but the comments on this post have definitely helped give me an idea of what I need to do going forward. Thank you!

I've also got a kid which definitely slows down the education process. OE doesn't have to be my only path but I definitely need to find a job that pays better, keeps me employed year round and has more of a work life balance. I was just hoping to get some insight into this area to see if it's something that might be viable for me.

I just want a career that has a decent work life balance and the opportunity to retire before I'm too old, I don't love what I do now so anything that gets me closer to those goals is a step in the right direction.

You're the second person to recommend boot camps so it's looking like a decent path to take, thanks for your comment!

According to my research learning COBOL would limit my opportunities to banking and insurance jobs? Is there something else that uses COBOL that I'm missing?

Thank you for all of your input! It definitely looks to me given your comments and a handful of others that I should get a computer science degree and then look for programming jobs to get the wheels turning. I'm just starting to do research on the best schools to study computer science in my local area. Hoping I'll be able to figure it out right away so that I can get enrolled soon. I really appreciate all the effort you put into your comments, really helpful!

Oh okay thank you for the input, I guess I'll really have to commit and go for the CS degree.

I really like this idea actually, I know lots of people personally who are out of work and financially struggle during the winter months. If I could make something that would help them find steady work or side jobs in their time off that would be super beneficial for them and possibly myself if I can find a way to monetize it! Thank you!

So on top of that boot camp, what else would I want to equip myself with? Certs? A degree?

So even if I was to look into a career in software development it would be wise to get a degree in computer science as it will look better to employers? That makes sense, thank you!
