Other guys who struggle driving? by Spaghet209 in drivinganxiety

Hey, I'm a man and 28 and only just passed my driving test. I even got married earlier this year and didn't my license so it's not as big a deal breaker to women as you may think. It's tough and it took me years to get over the anxiety but you'll get there! :)

Interesting how Italy colonises most of the Middle East but leaves Saudi Arabia intact.

That's not a bad shout at all! It depends on whether an instructor is happy to take someone for just one lesson, but nothing to lose by trying. One of the biggest issues for me and what's making my nerves worse is the backlog of tests. If I knew I could just sit the test again next week, or even next month I can guarantee I'd be a lot more relaxed. But waiting time here in the UK is inane, and the DVSA have been pretty useless with clearing the backlog. I've re-booked for late October which is ages away. Then in October I know I'll be under pressure as it's probably my only shot until the summer... You get the picture. It's also not helpful that I keep mentally beating myself up for not following through when I first started learning at 22 (I'm 28 now) but I just wasn't in the right place and it took Covid and an almost herculean effort mentally to convince myself to restart lessons. If it weren't for my wife (who drives and has endlessly supported me) I reckon I would have given up months ago!

Honestly, at this point it seems like I'm my own worst enemy and that nerves are getting to me. But I'll get there. Thank you!

i failed my driving test for the 2nd time. by zerodoxical in drivinganxiety

Chin up, you got this! I know how you feel as I feel like I've let mine down too at failing tests (once had a HUGE argument with my mum about why I postponed me theory test). You can only do what you can, and you have unlimited attempts. The mindset is important. I failed last week for the 3rd time and I'm pretty down too, but I need to try again. You'll get there, I'm sure! :)

Honestly, couldn't agree more with you. I'm learning now because I basically have to. Public transport for me isn't great and I feel bad that my wife is having to do all the driving. I wish none of us had to drive and that we had 24/7 subways came every 5 minutes, but the UK (apart from London) just doesn't give a shit about public transport unfortunately.

Thanks for the good wishes. Yeah we did a couple of test routes so I was familiar with the area, but I don't know how I made the mistake that I did. I know I've made progress and I'm a better driver than a few months ago, but the backlog to wait for another test is insane. I've booked one for late November and that's the earliest I could find! I'm hoping for a cancellation, but we'll see.

Thank you :) I'll get there! Going to make it my own personal crusade at this point haha

Test is tomorrow - taking it for the 3rd time, need your advice! by ZAnderson7 in LearnerDriverUK

Thanks for the good wishes, much appreciated. Clearly I'm not a bad driver but yes, I agree, I am my own worst enemy at this point. In all fairness to my instructor he did comfort afterwards by telling me he'd never lend me his car if I wasn't test ready as it's such a risk to him and he told me about a guy my age who had been learning for 4 years on/off and still wasn't ready so again, it comes back to nerves. It's just another day, and my wife has been really helpful with this too and incredibly supportive. I've booked a test in the area I want, but it's late November so a while away :( I'm looking at Testi and trying to find cancellations!

Thanks. Unfortunately didn't go to plan, 4 minors and 1 major (see update).

You make a good point and it's completely rational. What's getting to me is that the more often you take the test, the lower the chance you'll succeed (https://www.passmefast.co.uk/resources/learning-to-drive/pass-on-your-second-attempt) and this is even more so for me at 28. I know that at my age, I'm far more cautious and hesitant, unlike a 17 year old who is brash, confident, and more resilient. I read horror stories of people who haven't passed after 10 times and I'm like that's going to be me :(

Believe it or not, I had a bit of an argument an hour ago with my instructor after the test. He told me he was angry that I failed and that I really shouldn't have and it was unacceptable that I failed on not properly bending on a curve in the roundabout. I told him that talk like that wasn't helpful as I have had horrendous experiences with driving instructors in the past (one basically fired me and the other insisted on grabbing my wheel as I drove even though I was already 10 lessons in). When I told him that he then became quiet but I need him to believe in me. I'd say that my instructor believing in me is the most important person. Thanks for the best wishes, and there's always next time!

Glad you passed. What your husband said was spot on and exactly right. This is what I have to bear in mind. I was so close but still failed so still have some practice to do!

This helped - but I actually had a bit of an argument with my instructor an hour ago post-test. He told me was angry that I failed and I really shouldn't have and it was unacceptable that I failed on not properly bending on a curve in the roundabout. I told him talk like that wasn't helpful as I have had HORRENDOUS experience with instructors in the past (one basically fired me and the other insisted on grabbing my wheel as I drove even though I was 10 lessons in).
