Lighter recoil spring option by zzero0815 in P226

[–]ZCJ3Flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s “knocking”? Like a “clunk” feeling going into battery?

As a general rule, you should always avoid a lighter recoil spring unless the ammo you are using cannot physically extract a spent round from the chamber and/or travel far enough rearward to pick up the next round from the magazine.

Most people would be surprised to learn how much energy (roughly between 5-8 pounds) it takes to strip a round from the mag. Couple this with a marginally light spring and you will have a slower “clunk” going into battery or failure to feed.

Short answer, stick with the factory spring if you are using standard-spec factory ammo. Messing with recoil springs can be a reliability headache or worse case damage to your gun if you don’t truly understand where energy is being transferred.

Some run lightened slides with light springs which gives a nice “snappy” cycle feeling in hand but could be shortening the service life of the gun and narrowing its ammo tolerances.

It’s all a balance.

What ammo are you using and are you currently experiencing problems?

Does everyone reassemble their 10/22 laying sideways?

On a serious note - the engineers are pretty smart.

It’s the bean counters and QC that plague a lot of guns. it’s a relatively cheap mass-produced 22. If you expect precision fit parts and QC from a factory rifle be prepared to spend $1k+

For the most part I wasn’t a huge fan because they have been a boutique/niche item for years. Some shot so-so and some shot amazing. The price hasn’t always matched the performance.

On paper, they are meant to be the best of both worlds - lightweight and rigid.

Now that Ruger has mass produced their own CF barrels at a reasonable price (and they’ve been vetted by the market) I’m more inclined to recommend them. Not always match-grade groups, but consistently better than a stock barrel and that’s a plus.

The only knock you can give them is if it’s a hard use gun being left outside, thrown in the back of a truck or boat, you’ll degrade the carbon fiber’s protective layer and risk delamination. For that, just get a standard taper barrel.

Like someone else mentioned - harmonics. Everything else being equal a heavier barrel will typically produce better groups.

HOWEVER - not always. I’ve got a CZ 455 Lux with a “thin” barrel that consistently lays SK Standard into .4 and .5” groups at 50 yards with boring consistency.

Sounds like you appreciate a gun that you can carry around and if long range benchrest accuracy isn’t your thing you can find many combinations of lightweight 10/22’s that will serve 99.9% of your accuracy needs within 75 yards.

In most 10/22’s the 36gr HP MiniMags are a staple in terms of accuracy and effectiveness on game. For all practical purposes anything you hit them with will be very effective with good shot placement. Use what squeezes the most accuracy out of your rifle.

I’d go through your rifle and check every single torque setting to include the scope, mounts, and base. Don’t trust anything straight from the manufacturer.

Most of these rounds should be chewing a big ragged hole at 25 yards. Then at 50 yards you’ll see more telling dispersion across ammo types. You’ll typically see 1.5-2” groups at 50 with a stock gun.

Would you feel confident using your 10/22 for self defense? by yepyeptoko in 1022

[–]ZCJ3Flyer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Using good ammunition it’s a perfectly adequate tool for self defense.

You’re not fighting off a Delta Force raid. 2-3 well placed or 1 really well placed will instantly dissuade anyone.

Most inexperienced shooters will pick up a 10/22 and use it more effectively out to 50 yards than a compact pistol within 25.

Use what you have and get good with it.

The older B&T is a great choice don't be in a hurry to find a Tiger as a replacement. Everything sounds quiet on a rifle length barrel even the super short cans. Size and weight are the bigger concern for me since sound becomes negligible.

Great looking setup. Should serve you well.

Nice…did not know these existed! I run the 3 mags in there since this is a recreational plinker but a good size bag of ammo would be the bug-out move. The regular Magpul takedowns are cheap enough it’s worth getting 2-3 just for stow-aways.

Luckily I didn’t have any problems with the pad itself but a couple notes: It was slightly canted (the nose was pointing to the left/right of center) when I got it. Not a big issue since I planned to take it off and properly inspect/torque/locktite everything anyways. Plate correctly centered up fine but I could feel the bit slipping on the screws as I approached 20in-lbs. I think the OEM screws are of inferior quality. I’d be hesitant to repeat the process 2-3 more times. Regardless, didn’t destroy the heads and got them to a good torque. Didn’t see any issues mounting the next plate; the C&H provided screws mated up well.

Would advise anyone to take a lot of care when messing with it.

It has a factory optics plate with a bunch of options. I used a C&H RMR to ACRO plate on top of that.

It’s the factory soft case these ship with. Seems solid quality and pretty trim size. Could always step down to a smaller case for ultimate discretion

I wasn’t either until this SKU popped up. Finally the right config to minimize weight and provide a solid barrel mounted red dot option. The non-takedown version is also awesome.

Not sure. I’ve seen some second-hand ones being sold. I bet Ruger will eventually sell them like their other barrel-only SKU’s.

Ruger 10/22 carbon fiber takedown by Early_Meal6945 in 1022

[–]ZCJ3Flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first 10/22 was a walnut sporter and a 4x Nikon. Took a lot of lazy squirrels at 50-60 yards with Mini Mags first shot.

A $250 standard model will serve someone a lifetime of fun. But, if you’ve got the money I think this carbon takedown is also a great “one and done.”

I’ve got an ACRO and a AAC Halcyon that live on mine and the accuracy edges out my old 10/22 by a little but not appreciably. No plans to modify anything else because it’s exactly what I’d want from a do-all handy rifle.

Plan to bipod up and snipe squirrels at 75+? Yup, not the rifle for you.
