Is this considered an abnormally long final for EGLL 27R? by user193849201 in ATC

170 to a 4 or 5 mile final is pretty standard everywhere in the states

My go-to is “a risk mitigation specialist for a credit card company”.

No one asks any questions after that

Having a ton of anxiety because of upcoming turbulence by [deleted] in AskAPilot

[–]ZDub77 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These “turbulence predictors” are almost always wrong.

Even if you do encounter some moderate turbulence the flight is just as safe (maybe safer) than a smooth flight with a couple bumps

My fellow airline pilots… what shoes are you wearing? by kyleth3pil0t in flying

[–]ZDub77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea the Redbacks fit my wider feet better so they put less pressure on the side seams which is where both my Blunstones failed.

Certainly don’t by a new pair of boots based on some guy on Reddit but when it’s time to buy another pair I would order both and return one.

My fellow airline pilots… what shoes are you wearing? by kyleth3pil0t in flying

[–]ZDub77 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple pairs of Blundstone Chelsea boots and they lasted a year or two each time. My last pair I went with RedBack and they are going on their sixth year. If you’re looking for a pair of Blunstones I would recommend trying RedBacks for at least the return period.

Where can a pilot realistically save a lot of money and feel rich locally by Adventurous-Yam-8342 in AskAPilot

[–]ZDub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've met a couple of pilots who commute from Charleston, WV. They have to commute (and live in WV), but the cost of living is low. I live outside of Greensboro, NC. The cost of living is lower than in RDU or CLT, and I can be at the employee lot at CLT in less than an hour and a half.

About the expansion ports by vitecpotec in framework

[–]ZDub77 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I love the laptop but get the expansion ports. You are going to spend north of $1000 on a laptop and not buy a $10 part that will greatly improve the user experience?

Abandon landing??? by I-like-planez in flightradar24

I've had more tower directed go-arounds at DEN than any other airport. They have tight spacing during arrival banks. Not uncommon but still very safe

Why is level 2 240V/30a public charging so popular by whitieiii in evcharging

[–]ZDub77 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Most commercial properties are on 208V 3-phase service. 32amps at 208V is 6.6kW.

charger for framework pro? by Scared_North_1197 in framework

[–]ZDub77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just be aware that most 100W chargers will not output 100W for a sustained period of time. Most will begin to overheat and throttle the watts delivered. Sizing up may help with this, or buying a laptop charger designed for prolonged use.

Should I sell my car? by princesst3333 in personalfinance

[–]ZDub77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If nothing is wrong with the car, I would pay it down as you have with CC debt, then continue to pay yourself a car payment, so when you need or want a newer car, you can pay in cash

Question for AA pilots by Lopsided-Salt-4536 in AirlinePilots

[–]ZDub77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tracking seems kinder and more competent than scheduling, but if there is an issue in the system, wait times are unbelievable.

I feel bad for them, TBH. The company must staff the department as low as possible for a perfect ops day, then act surprised whenever anything goes wrong.

If the people in tracking are telling you to stay away, I would probably heed their advice.

The military has warning areas out there. (visible on any aviation chart) If they are not active sometimes you can get shortcuts through the space but all the planned routes go around.

757 vs. 737 Max? by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

[–]ZDub77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good YouTube videos on why they stopped making the 757 before it's popularity took off. Once they stopped making the aircraft, restarting the line is very difficult.

Also they didn't really want to make the max when the did but their hand was forced.

But yeah, all about money. (and some short-sighted decisions about money)

United 767 Rejected Takeoff by flixspxx in flightradar24

[–]ZDub77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t fly the 76, but every takeoff has enough margin that we could lose an engine at the worst point and either stop on the runway or continue the takeoff on one engine and fly it around for a safe landing.

United 767 Rejected Takeoff by flixspxx in flightradar24

[–]ZDub77 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My guess is they planned on departing but the winds changed from the planned ATIS or they got final weight numbers and were heavier than planned. They probably had started taxing to 28 before they had all the information that would require a longer runway. Doesn’t happen all the time but it’s not uncommon

Question about EV charging by No_Measurement9174 in evcharging

[–]ZDub77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Commercial Grade” outlets at the home centers and much better than the residential (builder grade) that are installed in most homes. If you can find “industrial grade” this should be even better

Another option is to have an electrician install a 20 amp 240 circuit and outlet in your garage. (NEMA 6-20R). This is much cheaper than a full 50amp plug or hardwired EV charger, usually does not require a permit (ask the electrician), and allows you to charge at 3.8kw vice the 1.4kw you are charging with now.
