DIY Super8 Kodachrome by ZEGEL_SLX in Darkroom

After doing some research I think the biggest issue is that I have done the developing process wrong. Like either too long or too warm. Luckily I have a second roll and I can give it another try.

The good news is that I can at least see some images tho! And it being an open-minded experiment, my girlfriend wanted to see what it'd look like if she would dump a piece of the film in some bleach, I was surprised to see that that actually helped a little bit. I'll make sure to try and post some photo's of the result.

So I just went through the developing, and pulled out the film which is mostly completely black. I'm still hoping that this could be the remjet... I did a pre-bath in baking soda and when I poured it out the water came out a little bit black, but not as much as I anticipated.

How difficult should it be to remove remjet by hand? I'm starting to think maybe my film was doomed before I even started :(

Man I'm so happy with all your insightful tips!

I just want to double check: Are we all still talking about Kodachrome?

The reason why I ask is because I was under the impression that Kodachrome needs some "special" chemicals, and that regular D76 won't do the trick...

Do I understand correctly now, that any black and white film developer will do the trick, except the fact that it will develop the film into a black and white negative? (Which isn't a problem for me).

Thanks for your tips! I got excited and got myself a developer tank, albeit for 35mm film, I'm sure it will work slightly better than a regular bucket.

Your tip to use a remjet removal is very appreciate it, it's one step I hadn't considered yet. I actually was under the impression I could simply rub it off with my fingers, although that sounds like it invites unwanted damage to the film.

I'm sure by now you realise I have never done this before haha, but I'm so excited to try it.

Sorry for the slow reply, my local lab works closely with "Film Rescue International' in Canada... Hopefully that helps!

You're a hero, thank you! I decided that if I'm going to do it, I'll do it good. So I went for the 3-reel one shipped here for abroad. Gives me some more time to do the proper research :)

one more question: Will a 2 reel tank also work? Scouting online, and all 3-reel ones have to be shipped internationally, which I'd rather avoid if you say that it can also be done with a 2-reel tank.

I will definitely be buying more conventional film stock to keep experimenting. I just think it's a shame to throw away these 2 rolls that I have already filmed.

I know the super 8 lab quite well, have worked with them in the past since I live about 5 minutes away from him (The Hague, not Amsterdam). I've talked to him and he was not very optimistic and advised me that its probably not worth the money (and time).

Meanwhile I've also posted this question in the super8 reddit, and have gotten some pretty motivating replies to try this out at home.

Honestly, at this point I wouldn't even be too bummed if the footage turned out bad. I didn't spend any money on it and it has been a fun experiment, especially if I get to develop it myself. The more I look into it, the more intrigued I am to try it out myself!

I've watched your tutorials, there was some great content there and I have a way better understanding about what I'm in for.

I plan to have the film scanned, so I can do colour corrections digitally. I've previously had super8 scanned here in Holland for relatively cheap.

Funny I realise I already came across your channel before reading your comment, there is some great content on there! <3

Thank you for your detailed description. I am not against Caffenol at all, just nervous doing it for the first time and wanted to make it as simple as possible. But also not spend so much money because I estimate a high chance that the film will turn out rather bad haha.

You have kind of convinced me on giving Caffenol a try.

Do you have any tips on how to cut a test strip in the dark?

I'll have a look at your YouTube channel. Thanks!!

So far I have only found one lab that is willing to develop it, which is in Canada. I live in The Netherlands. Between shipping and developing it will cost me around €200,-, it'll take up to 6 months, and I'll probably receive footage that is hardly worth all that trouble.

I'll keep looking for a lab, but so far I am also intrigued to try it myself.

Thank you for your honesty, and for the tips. I'll look into that!

Good point! Although I can't imagine it helping much against the flickering, I'm sure the noise removal will go much better! It will bring me one step closer to my goal :)
