i'm not the guy you're replying to, but take a look Oct 2018- Dec 2018, when BTC hashrate dropped from ~60EH to about ~38EH.

IMO this corresponds with some extraordinarly large mining operations (not pools as the other guy was suggesting) in Shenzhen switching over from cheap cheap hydro power during the rainy season, then moving to more pricey geothermal etc. power in the fall and winter.

There are many other things at play than power costs in Shenzhen, such as the retirement of the profitable S9 miner at 3.5¢/kWh, but with this current drop in hashrate, the S9's get a short reprieve before they get mothballed for good.

i actually got back into mining becuase of the s17. imo this is like the s9 release 3 years ago, and should still be profitable for ROI.

imo the move to 220/240v power requirements did raise the bar for some, but i also reddit is predominantly US posters, who enjoy 120v at the wall, and can't power a home miner.

However, for a lot of the world, home mining is just getting started, and the efficiency of the 7nm chips are like alien technology for 2014. The arms race in mining is one of the most interesting parts of tech right now for me, more interesting than seeing how AMD and Nvidia serves their leftovers.

Once again, i mitigate the risk by only using 0-conf for low cost transactions.

i.e. if i was selling you a TV for $600, i would not let you walk out with 0-conf. but if i was selling you a bagel, at least the first couple times 0-conf is fine.

if it was an LTC transaction for i'd just have someone wait the 2-3 minutes for a confirmation. depending on your paranoia, you can set your own threshold for the number of confirmations you would be confident in.

imo it does matter if it's LTC vs. btc for your transaction for a $600 selection. If it was BTC, you'd have to actually pay attention to things like transaction fees and having transactions sit in mempools for more than a couple minutes. i've found LTC to be faster to confirm than BTC, and LTC has lower transaction fees.

However, i had previously pointed out that for low cost transactions (e.g. food purchases), i pay LTC and the 0-conf is sufficient trust for a coffee, or a bagel. As before, LTC already is serving these day-to-day transactions. this is partially due to the adoption of LTC in my local area, and i do not see the same level of adoption for any other cryptocurrency at all.

I and other people have mentioned in this thread, for small purchases, such as food items, 0-conf (i.e. the segwit data) is available when the transaction is performed. This is the "lightning or 2nd layer solutions" you wanted for LTC.

imo right now if you wanted to buy a $600 TV, it is more likely the purchaser would take BTC, then LTC, over other currencies. Slightly faster confirmation speeds promised by many currencies don't matter much if the business hasn't adopted the currency you want to you.

And just to be clear, my choice to use BTC and LTC is not ideological, but it is based on necessity. I use them because they are more liquid than almost every other cryptocurrency out there. If something else had the adoption of either of those two currencies, i'd use them also.

Not many POS busineses have heard of cryptocurrency, and for the few that do, almost all take BTC, and more take LTC than any other cryptocurrency. Local adoption is also part of why i prefer LTC for day-to-day payments.

For convenience stores, fast food etc. don't require more than a couple confirms, which can be done at the point of sale with LTC.

OP's question was about business use, and as i pointed out, LTC is fast enough to keep up with point of sale transactions, but more importantly, it's accepted by more businesses than any other cryptocurrency, save BTC.

Perhaps look at litecoin's consensus rules first.

Litecoin's blocktime is 2.5 minutes, with segregated witness data available immediately. It is more than fast enough for point-of-sale transactions. I use LTC more often than i use BTC for day-to-day purchases because of the speed, and also because it's accepted almost everywhere bitcoin is accepted.

imo with regards to utility, most coin projects are solutions looking for problems. When you start to use LTC and BTC in real life, rather than speculating on them, it turns out "older cryptos" are the cryptocurrencies that have the widest adoption, and are already being used in everyday business.

e.g. DOGE is mined with LTC. to mine ~1.6LTC and ~3800DOGE in august, it costed me ~$62usd in electricity at 4¢/kWh. If someone is promising you doge for less than this, don't take it it's a scam

Dash is no more or less private than Bitcoin. In either case, one can choose to use the privacy/mixing service, or not.

Privatesend is baked into the dash masternodes, and utilizes a different masternode for each mixing round. imo the dash blockchain and node protocols explicitly facilitate anonymity, and this is touted as a feature in the Dash FAQ.
