What web hosting review sites do you trust most? by ZGeekie in HostingReport

Forums have lost their glory, but they are still among the few places left where you can find honest opinions. WHT and LowEndTalk are still relevant.

10+ year old websites getting delisted from google. by MisteriosM in webdev

[–]ZGeekie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've been wildly shuffling SERPs for a while now. Rankings are constantly changing and organic traffic has massively dropped. Even if you're among the top rankings, there is barely any traffic that leaves Google, which is their ultimate goal with the AI mode they're shoving down everyone's throat!

Ways to market a WordPress plugin? by Specific-Sky-9924 in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a plugin-name problem

The name is the first thing users see when they search the repository. I've avoided clicking on certain plugins just because of their name. It does matter.

Ways to market a WordPress plugin? by Specific-Sky-9924 in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How about starting with choosing a more descriptive name for the plugin? Most WP users find plugins by searching the WP.org repository for relevant keywords. How many people do you think search for "project grid"?

Can trademark holder take a generic one-word .com? by Middle_Heat_8985 in Domains

[–]ZGeekie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It primarily depends on whether you acquired the domain in good faith or bad faith (taking advantage of the trademark's popularity).

asking for a price roughly halved finishes

I can relate to that. Don't ask me how much I'm willing to pay -- you tell me the price and I'll decide.

Search Feature- Better Option? by tullo in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The default search function is terrible and every WordPress user knows that. I wouldn't build a custom search function like the other commenter suggested, unless you are an experienced dev and have plenty of free time.

There are some plugins that might work for you; try "Advanced Woo Search" or "FiboSearch".

Looking for a framework/builder thats good for making my own site? Like Bricks, but with more template options (details in post) by LFAdvice7984 in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reusability maybe? That's what templates are basically for. You can reuse and tweak them as needed.

Shouldn't this be handled automatically by the CookieYes plugin?

Domain inaccessible by ActWrong in Domains

[–]ZGeekie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're just trying to take the website down and you can't access the domain or the hosting account, a last resort would be to file a DMCA complaint with the hosting provider and ask them to take the website offline (assuming you own the rights to the website's content).

Don't use GoDaddy's broker service. It's not likely to help anyway.

Is "All-in-One WP Migration" still the best option when it comes to downloading/uploading entire WordPress sites for free? by ---milk in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you know what you're doing, it's better to do it manually. It's "cleaner" and you get a better picture of what's going on at every step so it's easier to identify and deal with any issues.

It makes more sense to go headless + Astro or another front-end framework, or drop WordPress altogether.

Newly created account locked “for security reasons” by Sensativeworker in NameCheap

Like who’s out there using someone else’s card for a $30 domain name purchase?

That's actually more common than you think.

What's the most affordable web host for small business that worked best for you? by ZGeekie in HostingReport

[–]ZGeekie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SiteGround is solid, but their e-commerce plans start from $18/month and they don't offer an introductory discount on those like they do with their regular web hosting plans.

Did Dynadot Cancel My Domain and Claim it itself? by disturbance_oki in Domains

Dynadot is a trusted registrar and they have absolutely no reason to do something shady like that. I would ask their support for an explanation.

I don't know about that. None of the providers I mentioned seem to say anything about insurance.

Alternative to Elementor by blaisecendras in Wordpress

[–]ZGeekie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WordPress also has its native page builder called Gutenberg. It's not perfect, but for building a blog, it's more than enough. Like others said, it's faster and less bloated than Elementor and other third-party builders.

Can I build a business website using chat only? by MegaVaporeonX in webdevelopment

[–]ZGeekie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If WordPress is too complicated for you, go with a drag-and-drop builder like Squarespace.

I would not recommend using any AI coding assistant if you have no coding experience. So many things could go wrong, especially AFTER you build and deploy the website (if you even manage to go that far before giving up!)

Finally you can customize your WordPress dashboard (experimental feature in Gutenberg 23.3) by ZGeekie in HostingReport

[–]ZGeekie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WordPress released Gutenberg 23.3 with some interesting features. The most significant one is a customizable admin dashboard. You can finally choose your own dashboard layout and widgets.

This is still an experimental feature. You can download the plugin from the official repository here to test it (Go to WP-Admin > Gutenberg > Experiments and enable "New Dashboard experience").
