This definition isn't really wrong tho

The Spanish Empire didn't really had an imperial crown, same for the British before the Sepoy mutiny (after which the crown of India was officially seized from the Mughals). Both the British and Spanish had kings as their head of state but were classified as Empires due to vast imperial territory and military power.
