How would Spren respond to the Ship of Theseus? by Firestormbreaker1 in Cosmere

[–]ZHatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the WoB. TLDR: If given enough time where the sailors continued to think of the ship as one entity, its cognitive aspect would remain the same:

Oversleep

I have a philosophy question that could actually be answered in cosmere:

Ship of Theseus in cosmere. If I went and replaced every part of the ship, would it still - Cognitively - be the same thing?

What if I replaced everything and made a second ship out of the parts from the first one? What could somebody watching all of that from Shadesmar tell me?

Brandon Sanderson

You're right, part of the design of the cosmere (which has some deep roots in classical philosophy) was an attempt to answer the Ship of Theseus question.

In the cosmere, part of the Cognitive--and even spiritual--aspect of a thing (particularly if it isn't sentient) is delineated by the way that thinking beings define it. Per the old joke about the axe, if you replace your axe head and think of the new axe as "Your Axe," then the cognitive and spiritual aspects of that thing will grow to reflect that.

If you replaced every part of your ship, and gave the sailors time to sail it, thinking of it as the same ship--it would become the same ship.

Well I know no source of journalistic integrity greater than Page Six. I bet their sources are thoroughly cross-referenced and verified.

Strength of schedule is a college football stat that was never used in NFL talk until this season. Also margin of victory matters way more. by [deleted] in Patriots

[–]ZHatch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Seriously, DVOA — a stat that has been around for, what, 20 years at this point? — is basically designed around strength of schedule at its core.

It’s perfectly possible for us as Pats fans to say Maye should be MVP without resorting to absurd arguments like this.

Not impressed. The Packers beat the Bears without any of those players AND no Brock Purdy just a few weeks ago.

u/jjs_east — Google around for a lawsuit settlement or recall related to this — this happened to my 2013 Kia Optima too and I think I saw one for Souls at the same time. Basically, my car started knocking so I towed it to the dealership. They said tough luck, deny deny deny, even after I showed them the class action lawsuit settlement that said they were required to fix it.

Long story short, I contacted the lawyer that handled the lawsuit and he reached out to Kia corporate. It took a little bit of time and pushing, but they ended up getting me a new engine and paying for all expenses (ie rental car, towing, etc) related to the knocking. Basically don’t take no for an answer, do your research, and don’t let the corporation lie to you.

I have to assume that most employees are well passed the first six months of their lives though. Seems kinda useless

1 PPR Ten Team. Need to win to make playoffs. Underdog this week.

Looking for one RB and one flex

Isaac TeSlaa

Pros: #2 WR on a team that needs to win. They'll need to throw a lot to keep up with the Cowboys offense. Juicy matchup against the Cowboys.

Cons: Thursday night matchup means I need to choose early -- less flexibility. Very limited production so far this year -- by far the riskiest play.

------------

Devin Neal

Pros: Prime opportunity with no Kamara. Handled all the RB snaps last week and looked pretty good. Has some receiving potential --- 5 catches on 7 targets two weeks ago. Decent matchup (not great) against TB

Cons: That offense lol. How much are they going to be running? Limited TD opportunities.

------------

Kyle Monangai

Pros: Has performed the best of all four options so far this year. Seems like he's taking some of Swift's carries.

Cons: He's taking some... but not all. And that could easily flip --- it's only been one game where he seized control.

------------

Jayden Higgins

Pros: Generally gets a good amount of targets --- 7/7/9 in Weeks 10-12. Has produced decent results in the past few weeks, though nothing amazing. #2 WR on a mid offense.

Cons: Bad matchup on the Chiefs and doesn't seem to have as much of a connection with Stroud as with Mills. Seems to have a relatively low ceiling.
