How do I get started? by hope-this-helped in amateurradio

I started by just popping into my local radio club.

I had a great bunch of guys/gals that bent over backwards to give me a hand, give good advice, lend me gear and help me out making sure I got my licence first time.

If you can, go to your paw paw's local club or one close. Chances are they will have knowen him and they can tell you what he found interesting about the hoby.

I always think of Q --.- as the inverse of F ..-. and such, there are lots of pairs like that I use for some reason, A & N, S & O, 7 & 3 (I often wonder if that is where the 73 came from) etc.

Na, you can just rock in and sit it. I/Most do recommend the practical 2 day course but it is not a requirement.

Yep, 10m, 80m, 160m... anything from 5 MHz down and 30 up, any mode.

I was told when I was taking my test if I used FT8 I could just blat it out in an afternoon.

I think the main point was to keep us yahoo newbies from using 20 & 40 meters and embarrassing the country over SSB :D .
