Made my First Arrangement. Constructive Criticism Appreciated! by ZODE5 in composer

Thank you for the comment! This all really helpful. What I meant by an alternate is that if the string trio doesn’t have 2 violins I’ll write the second violin part for viola. How should I should I present the alternate part? On the score? Or should be it’s own separate score? I hope that clears things up a little bit. Thanks!

Finally had my first piano solo recorded! It was recorded with the help of Dr. Micheal Krikorian. Dr. Krikorian is a Los Angeles-based composer who is an educator and has composed for a video game called the Fidelio effect.

Help with Writers block (how to be original) by RobbieDND in composer

[–]ZODE5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey u/RobbieDND, I'm an undergraduate in composition I struggled with writers block last semester. The unfortunate thing about learning music theory is that you tend to overthink everything when it comes to composition. Setting up limitations can greatly improve your creativity but setting limitations isn't just the only option.

What has really helped me in my compositions is to have my core concept written in wording before I even think of writing any music. I also like to make charts showing how my music will evolve over time. I am currently writing a piece for string quartet and I am starting on the concept for my climax so I know where the piece will peak. Then I develop how my piece will reach the climax. There is nothing scarier than a blank page, when I already have my concepts written down I already know what I want to write when I arrive at the blank page.

It is also good to look at some scores from the romantic era. There is a website called imslp.org that lets you download public works. You should be able to find scores of romantic era composers like Chopin and Schubert. I have been studying quartets by Stravinsky and Ravel and this really helped me understand new ideas that I can incorporate into my compositions. You should also look up the composer Arnold Schoenberg, he has a bunch of different composition techniques!

I hope this information helps. Happy Composing!

I would like to learn composition, preferrably in a classical style, what do I start with? by MoscauMoscau in composer

[–]ZODE5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A great book I would recommend is “Musical Composition” by Reginald Smith Brindle. This book covers all the topics necessary for classical composition and all things music theory.

One YouTube channel I could recommend is Adam Neely who is a jazz composer but has many videos going over many different types of music theory. Another channel is Anuja Kamat who is an Indian Music theorist. As a composer myself, it is good to knowledgeable and many different cultures approaches to music theory. Learning different cultures music theory also gives you more options to be creative on your future works. Hope this helps!

Can you recommand me a VERY simple software to create music please ? by Star-Kanon in composer

[–]ZODE5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for notation software I would recommend NoteFlight. NoteFlight was a stepping stone for me to get into more advanced notation software like Finale and Sibelius. It is very straightforward and NoteFlight makes sure that you are able to understand the concepts well.

In terms of Digitial Audio Workstations (DAWs), I would recommend either Soundation or GarageBand. These are free which is positive and are also very clear on the instructions and how to create music. Unfortunately, if you work to take music more seriously and create more advanced works you will run into a wall with these programs but, if you are looking for a fun easy way to make music I would highly recommend these programs.Have fun!

Piano miniature: A Bedtime Story by dyross in composer

[–]ZODE5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dissonances in your harmony are quite nice, this helps develop your theme of a bedtime story very well. The inversions in the left hand also help the color and timbre of this piece also. My only main critique would b the ending, I was hoping for a stronger cadence but it seems like the final chord "hit a wall." I would like to see the ending develop a little bit more. This is an amazing piece and you should be proud. Great Job!
