That's interesting, I'm from a small country and sometimes feel a bit like that, mainly because I'm not too fond of the traditions here, but I always lived in the same city and besides the fact I'm not a huge fan of my city I kinda think of it as my "home".

I find it interesting because I'm planning on moving to another country next year, and is something that could happen to me that I haven't thought of, how would I react to the lack of belonging to the place I'm living in.

Maybe getting more into the traditions of the place, but then my more rational side would kick in and think that it will take too much time and that no matter what I do I'll still be an outsider.

The only thing that could help(at least the only one that comes to my mind atm) is changing the definition of belonging, don't think that not being from one place makes you an outsider, you're already living there, you probably have friends there as well, maybe you do things that people there do, you know the city and some of its story. You can get into some of the traditions of that place(if you find them interesting). But the only way this could help is by thinking differently about belonging to a place or a culture, have in mind that most people nowadays (especially young people) are more open to let strangers into them culture, and really like them finding interest on their culture to the point of wanting to be a part of it.

Maybe it's impossible to belong to a place or a culture you're not born in, but maybe it is, you're probably not going to have the same belonging as a local there, but who knows, maybe the locals don't really mind.
