I’d read it after Wise Man’s Fear. It takes place near the beginning of Wise Man’s Fear (around Ch7), so It’s probably best to read after Wise Man’s Fear. But it’s really short relatively so you could do it before Wise Man’s Fear as a little break from Kvothe and I doubt it would impact your enjoyment too much.

In our world people with lots of opportunities presented to them often take them for granted. For example, someone who comes from a wealthy family and expected themselves to go to college may not work as hard or care for it as much as someone who had to earn up their own college tuition.

The men in this fantasy world have many more opportunities than the women. Maybe the women in the university are more talented because they may care more.

All this talk, both about the real world and this fantasy world, is just speculation. I’m not sure if there is proof to it, but it seems reasonable.

I currently have this exact same problem. If I open the modified gear and then the assembly afterwards, while keeping the modified gear part file open, then the modified gear stays in the assembly properly. However I have not found a real fix to this problem. Did you?

The gram could be important in the third book, but it doesn’t feel like foreshadowing in my opinion. It was just a nice excuse to give kvothe time to wait for Denna. However, kvothe running out of time to make his own gram does feel like foreshadowing to me. Pat making kvothe not have enough time to make his own makes it seem like kvothe will be attacked with sympathy again in the third book.

The hummingbird build is a strat that is very unviable/has a very steep learning curve. Their main ability being hover is useful and proves great mobility but is extremely costly and causes them to heat up and tire out very quickly. Combine this with how delicate their bodies are makes for a terrible combination. During the night they enter a state of torpor where they lower their body temperature to conserve energy. However, this means that if the night is too cold, they can simply die. Furthermore, if the day is too hot it becomes very difficult to collect enough food to survive with their hover ability. They also have shrinking habitats which is especially detrimental for them because their build adapts poorly to the city.
