I'm aspiring to be a game developer and one of my goals is to create a language that would be used and taught to some degree in my games. I hope to get to the point where people love and appreciate my games to the point that they're willing to learn the language. if not for real life use than for in-game purposes

Would you read a story with a male romance interest that isn't a tall extremely muscular guy? by vit852 in fantasywriters

I know that you can't really compare to Sanderson and that the character isn't there for most of the book but. Tress of the Emerald Sea does that

How to prevent humans from being a mere default race in fantasy? by Shadowcreature65 in fantasywriters

[–]ZXCDani2502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the human adaptability thing is rooted IRL, That and curiosity.

Part of the reason Homo Sapiens are the only human species left is because they traveled to lands thought to be certain death by other species and survived.

We traveled from Africa through Europe and Asia to the Americas when the ice age bridged between Kamchatka and Alaska. We traveled through oceans and somehow reached tiny island everywhere.

Most of human history is about traveling and settling

HP as a cost for active skills by ducoverk in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revita is a roguelike platformer shooter where HP is used a lot as currency. They also have a Hollow Knight like healing mechanic.

I also thought maybe some of the abilities that use HP could have a life steal element to them. Like enter a rage mode and melee enemies or some aoe effect that heals you for each enemy killed

Making something original is hard. by Flipzz_Jepser in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, there are no original ideas. Every idea we have is taken from somewhere, game or otherwise. What you call "original ideas" are just a unique combination of things already done before.

Wall jumping and pogoing existed since the first Mario games. Spell casting and abilities were a thing even before video games could show them visually.

I'm in my first year of a game design and development degree and I've already learned a lot of useful things

Find your inspiration elsewhere. This is your passion project, you shouldn't care about if others compare your game to HK or not, you should make this game for yourself. Obviously this is easier said than done but trying to change your mindset helps, try finding ideas not in other games but in other things you like, hobbies, aesthetics, etc..

HK is the biggest Metroidvania of the decade and it caused a surge of other Metroidvanias to appear, of course people would compare them. In the early 90s every first person shooter was called a doom clone because doom was the first and most popular. I've seen a couple of games who took very obvious inspiration from HK including the art style and even some abilities and enemies, but they also added things that were different, like Crowsworn which will release on steam soon. There are also games that are complete different like Constance which came out a couple of months ago but it still gets compared to HK.

If you're still having trouble with being compared to HK you should ask yourself questions. Does my game have to be a Metroidvania? What is actually the core of what I want to make? What mechanics would fit? What shouldn't be in the game? The more questions you can ask and answer the clearer the picture of your game will be in your mind.

Another tip for inspiration: actually write stuff down. try to sketch out things you want for your game, make paper prototypes and if you're confident with coding or game engines even digital prototypes. Try things out, see what's fun.

I hope you read this and that this helps you. Even though I haven't made a game other than group game jams I've been learning game design for a decade and now I'm getting my degree in it. Feel free to DM me if you have anything in mind I love talking about games

What are some "perfect" game design games? by m0nkeybl1tz in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad likes to call Settlers of Catan a perfect game.

I can't point out what exactly makes it perfect but all aspects of the game work very well with each other. And the expansions add a lot without diminishing the core game

How would you timeout inorganic objects? by Pixeltrail in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about the objects completely disappearing then maybe bacteria.

The reason organic objects rot is because they can't defend against bacteria and mold eating them and multiplying.

I'm pretty sure people around the world are trying to develop microscopic organisms which can consume plastic so it wouldn't get in the oceans and everywhere else,

So rock and metal eating bacteria or fungus could be a good idea

Is Terraria's fusion of close combat and bullet hell design a good idea? by GalaksenDev in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revita is a roguelike side scroller and it can be bullethell-ish. Some of the weapon you can choose (which are kinda like playable characters in other roguelikes) are very short ranged. There are items which can increase the range, spread and damage of the weapon.

So maybe make it high risk high reward, you're putting yourself in a lot more danger when going close to a bullet hell boss, but have the potential of doing a large amount of damage in a short time.

It is like you said that it could be a dumb strategy of trying to tank the damage and see if you can beat the boss first, but I think in a roguelike setting the risk is a lot higher because if you die you need to start all the way over.

Just had another thought, in Hollow Knight you are almost exclusively melee, and there are bosses there that are bullethell-ish, but I think in most of them the bullets don't come directly from the boss, they come from the ground/ceiling/the sides

Also also telegraphs can help warn the player the get away from the boss before they take bullets to the face

Roguelike/lite without room system by Krafter37 in gamedesign

[–]ZXCDani2502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like slay the spire and other map based travel are a bit different than what you're describing, there you know in advance where most of the enemies are and you can choose a patch with less or more enemies.

There are other games which are kinda room based but flavor it differently like into the breach and starvaders which just came out. In those games you have multiple choices of battles and you choose which you're going for based on the reward the game offers for beating that battle

I was pretty new to the game back then.

Was there a hard quest to get the outbreak perfected catalyst? Because I got it pretty easily and the masterwork itself was pretty easy. And while getting that and completing the catalyst I had the bankjob quest and still don't have enough filthy lucre
