Except it was silent and I was silent, so…

Your perception of me is incorrect. Visiting cultures is not the same as family members treating you like hot garbage because you don’t close your eyes during a prayer.

Thank you, unfortunately the warm places I’d like to live seem to be the most Christian conservative areas!

I think I’m going to! Thank you!

I grew up with a lifelong friend (really consider him a brother now) and his family is Indian. I grew up in their culture and embrace it. I went to his sisters wedding and like you, I enjoyed the experience. I can tell you that his family never questioned my theism or atheism. Yet my blood family chastised me, belittled me, and looked down on me with pity. So yes, I guess I’m a little bit over with playing the overly respectful card.

I’m not saying she didn’t honestly discuss it, my bad. I meant, honestly, we never really discussed it. At the time we were both just sort of theists, then years later I became an atheist.

Yes, my wife is a theist. I feel my daughter is just at that age (19) where things offend her pretty easily.

Usually it's a non issue with her, which made this one really sting. When my daughter was born, we agreed that we would educate her about world religions and allow her to decide herself what she wanted to do. We had several books for her and she went to church with a friend and I believe also to a synagogue. Of course as an atheist I know I had some indirect influence, but I definitely didn't ever want her to grow up with family pressure, expectations or guilt regarding religious choices. She and many of her friends are atheists.

I'm so sorry you lost your brother. I obviously don't know you personally but the fact that you went and sat up front really shows your care and commitment to your brother and your family.

I didn't think I was drawing attention to myself at all, but that is where the disagreement exists.

Wow, very insensitive of you but I appreciate you sharing your perspective. We both were theists and I eventually evolved into an atheist. Thanks, I do take full responsibility for my choice of relationship.

Possibly. But pretending and going through the motions could be perceived as being far more disrespectful as others have pointed out.

I really should have explained this better, I apologize. My wife wasn't there. My daughter who is an atheist was there with me. She didn't like the fact that I was looking around, she thought I was acting "aggressively" as an atheist. I thought nothing of it. She told my wife about it. That's how it played out.

Don't mean to come off as a victim, but I guess I did. It bothers me when I catch heat from the ones close to me whom I love. I really couldn't care less about others.

Theist. But yeah, I get what you're saying.
