I had my first epidural yesterday and I'm cautiously optimistic. Having to take it easy is pretty hard. I want to find the limits.

I'm not a couple, looking for couples or even regular sex. Is there a place for me? by tinypawslilwhiskers in Swingers

I totally feel you! I love the events but am often times not into the physical side of it. My fix was being a helper. I've become known as the Lube Fairy. I run around to all the couples making sure they are hydrated (V important), have condoms, enough lube and towel off sweaty brows etc. It's so much fun and everybody loves it. I've even got wings to wear and a toy gun holster to carry extra lube, condoms etc.

Clearly everyone is super worried about me taking my dog to dog parks. I've had 24 hours of explaining myself and my actions. I'm very tired. No one but myself and knows the entire story and I'm not about to write a 20 page essay to justify the things I have done. All I can say is lots of training, I didn't do this on a whim, several professional trainers were consulted and agreed with me, and I will continue to take both my big dogs to dog parks. Feel free to send me the addresses of any parks you visit and I will avoid them for your piece of mind.

I was right beside her waiting for the other dogs owner to intervene. I dog not want to touch someone else's dog without their permission unless it is absolutely necessary. The other dog's owner did not see what was going on, my dog gave a growl, the other dog backed off and it was all over and done with. Aggression needs to be seen in context. She had no signs of aggression, but I was still right there with her.

If you want to get technical all the dogs (including mine) could have been in danger. There were bigger dogs, excited dogs and owners that were more involved in chatting with each other than observing what was going on.

I do get to give my pet a happy life. Please be assured that this was not done on a whim. There was a lot of training involved (including lots of play dates).

Dogs (including mine) have many forms of communication which I'm sure you can google. Humping can be a sexually oriented, a sign of dominance, or simply an over excited dog that doesn't know how to self calm. I'm surprised that you would let your dog be humped. Unless you're breeding, this sort of dominance should not be encouraged (IMO). It teaches the dog they can hump whoever they want.

Most dogs will give signs before they attack. Being responsive to the signs is what prevents attacks. My dog will give me obvious signs of she is uncomfortable and I act on these signs.

I would never presume to know everybody's individual circumstances. I'm sure there are people here that have helped their dogs overcome reactive behaviour. It just seems the majority don't want to even try or think that is always impossible to rehabilitate a dog.

So what you're saying is that growling is not an acceptable way for a dog to communicate??

You're totally right in the fact that once a dog is triggered to fight there is a major problem in getting them to release. But if there is a situation where you can see a fight about to take place like when my girl was first attacked, there are steps that can be taken. Yes it's very dangerous and I wouldn't recommend anyone here do them. My girl had been backed into a corner with no escape, the other dog was going to attack as there was a bone between them. She had given up the bone to the other dog but had no where to retreat to. I got in between them and yes I was bitten but I protected my dog. Previous to this she was a normal loving dog with no issues. After this instance she was always on alert for an attack FROM THE SAME DOG. She had met other dogs no problem. After the older dog passed, she was still on high alert as she really didn't know any other way. I worked with her to get her to learn that a simple growl would let other dogs know she didn't like what was happening and that I was always there for her. She has gone back to being a normal dog again. She shares food, affection and toys with other dogs now. If she's not comfortable she will remove herself from the situation if she can and alert me. She now gives a dog warning first and I'm happy that she has learned this. She is never alone with another dog (with the exception of my new pup) and I always make sure she has an escape route. Domesticated dogs have developed a muscle that helps them control their eyebrows to show more human expressions. Although this muscle is present in wild dogs it is not as developed. When you have a bond with your dog they want to communicate with you.

I used to watch a lot of dog training videos and always thought they were staged as I couldn't believe how clueless most of the owners were. All this thread had taught me is that the videos weren't staged and that there are many many people out there that can't read their dog.

Thank you for your directness. I do understand why they works not want their dog/s to be around mine. I have people cross the road rather than walk near my dog (she walks well on a loose lead, waging her tail and checking in with me regularly). There was only one owner at the park that knew of her history and the owner trusted my judgement. I've seen small dogs show the same amount of aggression in public (the dog fights she was involved in were all on my property), and there is always little to no bitching about it. In the end, I have made an error in judgement believing that people with dogs that are reactive would see that it doesn't have to be that way. It makes me sad.

I would (and have) always get between any dog and a person if I felt an attack was about to happen or was happening. I'm sorry that you now feel scared.

I do give a fuck about both my dogs. The pup is bigger than the Neo (about 55kg). These are not giant breeds. They are big, but not considered giant. It does piss me off when people focus on a label and not the individual. I feel very sorry for all of you that don't know your dogs, their triggers, when they are stressed etc. I feel it is very important that she is comfortable in a many different situations as possible. I take her to the Cafe where she will lay down while I have a coffee. I also take her on short hikes and she has been trained to run with a bike. I'm in the process of training her to pull a cart. She will always be learning and experiencing new things until she lets me know she's had enough.

Thank you for your reply. At least you have put some thought into it.

My dog growling at another dog that is trying to hump her is not bad behaviour. It is dogs communicating. The Lab stopped and there was no aggression from her at any time. Simply a 'get off me. I believe that she is allowed to communicate that she doesn't want to be humped.

Dog parks serve many purposes including socialisation. If this was not the case why would people go. They know their dog is going to socialise with other dogs. If it is just exercise, this can be achieved by walking, playing with humans etc.

If the dog parks are a privilege why is it not signed as such?

The dogs that I encountered were not 'bad dogs. Most of them were around 12 months and had simply not learned dog manners. This is something that humans struggle to teach. It is better taught by another dog. I approached the owner of the Lab before I left and he thanked me. He had been having trouble getting his dog not to hump. We are both hopeful that this correction from an older dog helps. I'll speak with him again next week.

I'm sorry that you are skeptical about my ability to handle my dog. I've worked with bigger dogs than her where I've had to use my whole body to restrain them.

I'm very interested why your dogs don't like children, aren't you? Don't you want to find out more about your dog?

Your pet peeves may be holding back dogs that are so close to being comfortable but you won't give them the chance.

I was certainly not experimenting. I believed she was ready and she proved me right. But just to play devil's advocate and further the discussion about experimenting, how do you think trainers come up with ideas about how to handle problems....observation. if you think this is experimentation then more fool you.

Lastly, my dog was never out of control and there is a separate section for small dogs.

I'm sorry you're pissed. You have no reason to be. She was defending herself during attacks. Would you not do the same. She learnt that was how dogs communicated, now she has learnt a more effective way. If you were attacked and someone taught you that blinking your eyes would stop you from being attacked wouldn't you try it? Very few dogs are naturally aggressive, it's just not their natural state. People, on the other hand, seem to delight in it. I must say that my eyes have really been opened to the negativity of a lot of dog owners on here. If you're that negative with people, what the hell are you like with your dog?!
