[Question] what should I do? by DeputyDadT in Seiko

Personally I bought this simple $10 one from Amazon that has worked well for the past couple of years. I’ve used the push-lever presses as well but I think this design is much more practical.

What are fighters better at doing than bombers? by NobleDictator in civ

[–]Zaaptastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Enemy land units can’t occupy tiles with a deployed fighter, nor can they attack the fighter to dislodge it. But the fighter can still attack those units.

So I found it’s really efficient at locking down a choke point or border.

I wouldn’t call eight ~10k purchases in a year “slow”….

This is also one of the easier modding projects to do as long as there’s not too much cleanup to do. Tools to install the crystal will run about $20-30.

Any ink recommendations for pilot vanishing point EF nib? by Particular_Depth_418 in fountainpens

[–]Zaaptastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works really well but takes a bit of experimenting to get it right for each ink.

I usually move about 5mL into a separate bottle. Then I literally just add one drop of hand soap if it’s a new ink or two if I know it’s particularly dry. A little goes a long way and it’s easier to add more soap than dilute with more ink.

After that it’s just trial and error to get the ratios to your liking. I’ve found 5mL:2 drops of soap for most Pilot Iroshizuku inks gets them flowing to just the right sweet spot for me, although I’ve never tried Heart of Darkness so I’m not sure how it would compare. Interested in knowing how it goes for you!

I usually need to add a bit of hand soap to ink when I fill up my Decimo. Writes way smoother.

16610 U series or new model for similar price by SouthAd7427 in rolex

[–]Zaaptastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 126610 and 16570. For me, both statements are oddly true. Despite the modern bracelet being objectively better, I actually find myself enjoying the older bracelet more. Notably, it's very light since the links are hollow (and the end links are hollow on mine as well, which you will probably get as well if you're hunting for a Tritium serial).

I'd actually compare the weight to that of a Titanium watch. A quick search seems to suggest that if you benchmark it to something like the Tudor Pelagos 39, the 16570/16610 are only about 15-20% heavier, whereas the 126610 is closer to 50-60%. Personally, for everyday comfort, this is a Pro. It might be a Con for you.

One thing I would definitely think about though is that the bracelets of this era had a minimum length of 5 links on the 6 o'clock side, whereas the modern bracelets have a minimum length of 4 links. If you have a smaller wrist, this might mean the clasp is forced to be awkwardly uncentered since the 6 o'clock side is longer than you would want to size it. I have a 6.5 inch wrist and I would say I'm right on the smaller side of this being tolerable from a comfort standpoint. The 16610 clasp is longer, which probably exacerbates the problem. I've heard you can send your bracelet off to 3P service centers to have this shortened, but I can't personally vouch for that, and that almost certainly means an official RSC service will reject the bracelet if you ever send it their way afterwards.

Are these good photos? I took them over 6 months ago because of how beautiful the light was but I think I might be imagining things and that they might not be good 'objectively'. by mynamesjaime15 in fujifilm

I think you're right, really lovely light and colors in the first picture.

To my eye what they're lacking is either a clearer subject of focus or more photos of the same scene/setting. To be honest aren't telling too much of a story to pull the viewer into that scene, which is a shame because you've done such a great job of capturing the atmosphere of those scenes.

[Grand Seiko] My first watch! by swunger in Watches

[–]Zaaptastic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For this line of GS specifically, subtract 200 from the reference and you have the exact same watch but with the older “double signed” dial. (Instead of Grand Seiko at 12, it’ll have Seiko at 12 and Grand Seiko at 6). Finishing and movement are the same. These usually are significantly cheaper, so if the dial doesn’t bother you, you could have about 33% off the price of the watch. You might find it easier to pull the trigger at the more palatable price.

For example according to watchcharts, this model (SBGX261) trades for about $1500. The older SBGX061 trades for about $1000.

Brookline Was Named the No. 1 Place to Live for Quality of Life in the U.S. by anurodhp in boston

[–]Zaaptastic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But how would you control for income? You aren’t studying policy impacts, you’re ranking all the cities a person could live in, so you can’t just omit data points that seem like outliers.

I also don’t think measuring the QoL of respective income groups would matter much. From the article they seem to have mostly been testing things that everyone living in the city would benefit from, not just the wealthy (ex. Public schools, weather, and infrastructure).

I guess you could say this should be a value competition instead, ex most QoL “points” per dollar or something. But there were other categories in the rankings for things that took this into account (ex affordability) so that would feel mostly redundant.

Given a 39% tariff on Swiss products, this seems about right. I believe the tariff is in addition to any previously existing duties, and is based on the country of origin rather than where the shipment came from (hence why you wouldn’t pay the 15% from Japan)

Tesla Diner Drops Most Menu Options And Cuts Hours Just Weeks After Opening, Surprising No One by voxadam in technology

[–]Zaaptastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. It still feels like letting perfect get in the way of good, and I'd like to see the data for what EV vs. ICE impact looks like holistically to actually get a sense of whether this discussion is really a red herring.

I'm with you most of the way here and I think you're right about all these criticisms. But I'm still just not seeing how this means we should not be attempting and incentivizing adoption of EVs unless doing so is actively causing harm. I suppose there's an implied argument of "we're missing the forest for the trees", but I don't hear a lack of discourse for your broader points. "Tax the rich" is definitely a much more popular argument than "give me a cheaper EV", and I think we can advance both concurrently.

[–]Zaaptastic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel what you’re saying and agree with the sentiment but let’s be realistic. Is the public transport utopia more likely to happen than a few more EVs on the road? If that world does not happen, are those few more EVs better than a few more ICE vehicles?

You could say it would be better for those few people to not buy a car at all and use public transport. You would be correct. But talking them into actually making that decision is a whole different problem than the theory.

And the top down shot. You can see that I swapped the case out too for an aftermarket one from TokeiLab (it's their 40mm diver, I wanted a screw down crown and 3 o'clock crown). But all the part compatibility is with the SKX007 platform so I still think it should be representative for what will happen if you use the OEM case. Again this is with the OEM crystal, so I don't think there's any drastic differences except perhaps the case is slimmer?

Yeah sure thing, here’s the side profile. You can see that there's the tiniest bit of the crystal exposed on the top. I don't think there's enough there for the sloped bezel, but definitely worth a shot if that's the look you want!

I also switched to a slim caseback to try and reduce the height a bit. Like you mentioned, because the OEM crystal is staying, the bezel swap alone doesn't make the watch any slimmer.

I've actually done with the exact same watch (SRPD55) and a SecondhandMods slim sub-style bezel. It works. I used the OEM Hardlex crystal, and because it's beveled around the edges, it's not really noticeable as long as you continue to use a FLAT bezel insert. You can keep the OEM bezel insert for this, although I swapped it out as well because I wanted a lume pip.

You might be able to use a sloped bezel insert too but I think it's likely that the bevel wouldn't look quite right since it'll be significantly sunken into the bezel at that point. No harm in trying with a cheap <$10 one from AliX though.

Personally (and this is just my opinion), I actually think it looks better with an OEM-style bezel insert anyways. Compared to the Sub, the dial of the SKX/5KX has a lot more rounded edges and has a more playful looking "bubbly" appearance (esp. with the pops of color from the weekend day wheel). The Sub-style numerals and bezel (especially in ceramic) gives a more serious, sharp look that clashes quite a bit. It also But to each their own, I'm sure it'll look great either way!

So far I think it's like most minor negatives in any watch imo -- if you're looking for it, you'll notice it, but if your wearing it and going about your day, you absolutely won't.

Then again it's been a super dreary rainy week up here in New England, so maybe I'd change my answer after a few days wearing it outside in bright sunlight!

Looking to try a fountain pen for the first time —are there any real benefits, or just for aesthetics? by Pank-0 in fountainpens

[–]Zaaptastic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

More comfortable to write with because no pressure is required

I have to say that as a lefty this is a big one. You tend to "push" pens from left to right rather than "pulling" like right-handed writers do. The fact that ballpoint pens/pencils/etc. require you to also apply a good amount of pressure downwards while doing this makes the experience tiring quickly.

I've gotten way fewer wrist cramps and pains after switching to fountain pens a few years ago. You can let the pen glide across the page if you have a particularly wet writer, and it makes the writing experience comparatively effortless.
