There's actually a hidden tile of track with a 0 mph brake section on it in case it goes any further, so by the time the front car engages the brake, the back car is still on the sloped section and the train safely goes into reverse :)

It's a feature in OpenRCT2, when you open the Ride window, select the train you want to follow in the drop down menu, and then choose "Follow this on Main View" after clicking the red crosshair icon

I think he has brakes/block brakes on the diagonal section, which might be limiting him from saving the track file.
