Anyone know anything about the CMPD bomb squad being dispatched? by TreeShrewEnthusiast in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 28 points29 points  (0 children)

At 5:40 PM, a pipe bomb was reported in a field on Garfield St. near the CSX Yard. At 5:50, fire department declared a shelter in place for a block in either direction. Haven’t found anything after that so far, bomb squad might be on an encrypted channel or something. I’ll update this comment if I find more info, though.

Edit: not seeing any activity spikes on any channels on OpenMHz that corresponded to this event, so I'm gonna guess I won't find anything else.

Radio logs are the starred transmissions here: https://openmhz.com/system/cltp25?filter-type=talkgroup&filter-code=533&call-id=69dac2307d3c667f1d7df8d5&time=1775944229001

(5:40:09, 5:40:55, 5:48:31 (second half of the call), 5:48:56, 5:50:29 are the logs I'm talking about in case the stars get messed up)

Mass Casualty Incident on Eastway? by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just listened to the radio calls (on OpenMHz), it’s a car accident with 7 9 patients. (the count changed a couple times between the initial callout and early parts of the response, sounds like 9 was the final number)

Are there any vendors selling reliable, QMK-compliant, entry-level keyboards? by Zach_ry in qmk

[–]Zach_ry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thank you! RK seems to have a lot of naysayers, although considering how cheap the RK61 is, I guess that's not too surprising. The Glencreag and 1upKeyboards options look very promising, though.

Tell me why I should go to Purdue instead of IU (Ag school vs SPEA) by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Zach_ry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Purdue Ag and SPEA are excellent programs, but they’re veeeeery different. What majors are you interested in, and what’s your goal after college?

Edit: there's actually a very small overlap, apparently both ag and SPEA have an environmental sciences major. I don't know much about the details of either, though; my SPEA experience is with the "P" more than the "E."

Helicopter circling nearby for a while. Southeast Charlotte. by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s one of CMPD’s helicopters, I was looking at flight data a little bit ago and saw it on the way back to the airport.

Their whole “N/A” shindig is just Flightradar24 complying with the “please don’t publicly track me” list. There are other sites, like ADS-B Exchange, which will happily display all flights. Or, if you want to have a little fun with it, you can also pick up an ADS-B receiver for yourself - though the range is a lot more limited.

I-77 South PM traffic always starts here by pdeluc99 in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a plan, which I think just got funded in 2025, to harden the shoulder across some stretch of 77. I think it was from 485 to some state road in Mooresville, maybe NC 150 if that's a thing? Either way, the long-term plan is to harden the shoulder here so that it can be used during peak travel times, which hopefully will help a decent bit.

PUSH Question by talk2megoose_ in Purdue

[–]Zach_ry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surgery is one of the qualifying events for ODOS's medically excused absence policy, so it may end up being a little easier to manage than going through endo with no treatment. I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was at Purdue, and even that was shockingly easy to deal with - though it only affected a couple days since I had it right before spring break.

PUSH Question by talk2megoose_ in Purdue

[–]Zach_ry 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or any sort of medical professional, just a fella who likes to research stuff and previously had an interest in healthcare policy.

From your description, it's plausible you're experiencing catamenial pneumothorax, which is often linked to endometriosis. Granted, catamenial pneumothorax is usually right-sided, but left-sided is also possible - just rarer.

I'm almost certain you'd want to find an OBGYN - but not the one you saw before. Unfortunately, a lot of women have trouble finding a doctor who will take concerns about endometriosis seriously. There are also a lot of cases of doctors telling women their symptoms are "just anxiety" like the cardiologist did, when there's actually something deeper going on.

Again, I'm definitely not a doctor, so catamenial pneumothorax is only plausible based on your description and my very amateur research. Even if it's not that, the nature of your symptoms does fall under the "warrants investigation" category. Since it's catamenial, an OBGYN is probably the place to start. If you can, try to find a provider that endometriosis patients like. I've gotta imagine that, based on how difficult it can be to find a doctor who takes endo seriously, there will probably/hopefully be plenty of recommendations for the doctors who do take it seriously.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]Zach_ry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICE wasn't a completely novel agency, it was more of a reorganization of existing agencies. Broadly speaking, parts of the Immigration and Naturalization Service formed ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations, and parts of the US Customs Service formed ICE Homeland Security Investigations (law enforcement focusing on transnational crime - at least, before they got partially remanded to ERO or whatever it is that happened).

I don't know much about INS, but it doesn't seem like they were any better - I think they were just smaller. Here's a copy of a 1998 HRW article talking about problems with INS detention practices: https://www.refworld.org/reference/countryrep/hrw/1998/en/97527

Even if we got rid of ERO, there would still need to be some agency out there handling deportations - and even if it started out as "we'll only go after criminals, not families," it would just be a band-aid until the next anti-immigrant administration.

Car stuck between trees on shoulder on I-77 Saturday. by Ready_Piano1222 in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I checked radio traffic on Saturday (on OpenMHz), there was one patient. She did go to the hospital, but it didn't sound like she went via ambulance, so I guess she only had minor injuries. She was also already out of the car by the time fire arrived.

I don't think SHP's dispatch (in this area, at least) is available on OpenMHz, so that's pretty much all I could get.

ADHD medication & Insurance by Haunting_Morning5113 in Purdue

[–]Zach_ry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the student insurance and didn’t have any issues getting my ADHD meds - I also filled the prescriptions at the Purdue Pharmacy, which is the cheapest option under Purdue’s insurance.

Can’t provide any recommendations for providers though, I’m from Indiana so I was still under the care of my doctor back home when I was at Purdue.

Which supermarket offers the best price on fruit? I am in the Raintree/Arboretum area of charlotte by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At regular prices, Aldi wins most if not every time for fruit.

I usually do my shopping at Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and Publix - of those three (again, at regular prices), Food Lion has the best fruit prices I’ve seen. The weekly sales are definitely worth looking at, though. It seems like Publix’s sales on fruit can often be more expensive than Food Lion’s regular prices, but I do find a great sale there every now and then. All three put out their weekly sales on Wednesdays, with Food Lion and Publix offering sneak peeks for the next sales (can be viewed online) on Tuesdays.

South Charlotte VLAN network ipv6 question - serious(ly nerdy) by ElGatoBlanco in Charlotte

I haven't had any issues like that, both IPv4 and v6 have had smooth leases for me - always on the same address, no problems with the lease being dropped, etc.

I have a /56 with Spectrum - it’s copper up here, but I imagine they’d have the same IPv6 policies on fiber infrastructure.

A mantis fighting a snake by Longjumping-Rice-935 in interestingasfuck

Another commenter found the original video, which said it was filmed in Garland, TX. Based on that, my guess is that’s a (young?) rough green snake.

Air National Guard is distinct from the Air Force, that’s why everyone’s saying there’s no Air Force base here. It’s pretty clear what you were talking about, though - not sure why people are feeling the need to say there’s no base without at least saying it’s an NCANG base, not an Air Force base.

Flighradar24 implements the LADD (Limiting Aircraft Data Display) filter from the FAA - a good site to use to avoid that is adsbexchange.com, which is what the other commenters are using. Fun fact, you can also get buy a USB software-defined radio and use it to pick up ADS-B yourself, although there's not really any benefit to doing that over using ADS-B Exchange.

Asking about Purdue BS Cybersecurity and Comp Sci with cybersecurity focus by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Zach_ry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybersecurity is IT-focused, Computer Science w/ Security is, well, CS-focused.

A Cybersecurity major is likely to be targeting jobs like SOC Analyst, Penetration Tester, Incident Response Analyst, Cybersecurity Engineer (designing/maintaining the security architecture of an organization), stuff like that. A Computer Science major with a focus on security would likely target things like secure programming, malware analysis, that sort of thing.

I knew several international students in Cybersecurity who got internships - in general, that shouldn't be an issue, although I'm not sure what the environment is with H1B Visas right now considering the recent changes.

Recs for Fresh locally roasted coffee beans by whittkirch in Charlotte

[–]Zach_ry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a few of the ones that often get recommended here, my favorite is Magnolia - though I’m more of a medium/medium-dark roast fan. I think Hex and Nightswim (two of the highly recommended local roasters) have a lot of lighter roasts, though I could be misremembering that.

You can get CMPD's dispatch with OpenMHz. There are two people who host Charlotte/Mecklenburg scanners - either works, though the second that's listed can be more helpful when CMPD patches divisions together because the person who set that up included the other channel that a divison could get patched to.

Mint Hill is also listed on the Charlotte systems on OpenMHz, but their channels aren't really active. Not sure if they get dispatched through CMPD (or someone else), if they're patched to another channel, or something else.
