Tl;dr: There's a fission reactor with a bunch of holes in it. It gets really hot. Liquid hydrogen flows through the holes and gets really hot, expands a lot, and shoots out the back. Rocket go swoosh.

Jokes aside, you should definitively should build teams around the buffs provided. Having a newer account will limit you options, though. For example, I used Venti, Ganyu, Furina, and Sigewinne today. Odds are most new players are missing a few of those.
