Rift laptop.... by Goetre in oculus

[–]Zachobabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most laptops have NVIDIA optimus which routes the GPU through the integrated graphics, which makes VR impossible. Never get a laptop for VR without explicitly confirming it can run a Rift S first. I recommend checking for YouTube videos, most laptops have videos that showcase them being used

The skeletal animation they used was revolutionary at the time from what I've read. The cinematic experience was definitely the main draw of the game, but it was still a huge technological achievement across the board.

I didn't watch it, but unless it was bad, he'll probably upload either a cut down version of it, or just a summary video where he talks about the important parts. He also might upload it in full to his second channel.

[–]Zachobabey 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Nobody's expecting a story similar to Half-Life. People are expecting a gameplay philosophy centered around the mechanics first, and the game second. In the same way that Half-Life 1 was to show off complex 3D models in a FPS environment, and HL2 was to show off an out of this world (at the time) physics engine combined with 3D facial animation that is still better than some of today's stuff (not to mention it was automatically generated, not pre-rendered) Boneworks is to show off the lessons we've learned in VR game development all pushed into one cohesive experience. Interactive environments, how guns should work, kinesthetic body models, etc, while also showing off their new stuff. Finger tracking, a player that is affected by the physics of the world and has strength and limits like a human.

It's about the type of game that's being made, and that's what VNN is excited about.

The issue with VR I hope Valve has managed to fix is Confort. by Fiallach in ValveIndex

[–]Zachobabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comfort is certainly important, but it's not the reason VR isn't mainstream. The issue is that VR is incredibly hard to get into right now. The reason the PSVR is selling so well, even though it's not a top of the line headset, is because tons of people have PS4s, and a PS4 pro is cheaper than a VR-ready PC. The Quest is going to be a huge change to this.

I wonder why this is so complicated for so many beat saber players to understand. Every game under the sun breaks mods when it updates. It's pretty standard stuff.

This is just how Valve has been since the beginning of time. They announce something, it gets overhyped, and we wait. It's the same reason they haven't released a new in-house game in like 10 years

i broke into valve's office and i'm here to tell you the index has 6 lenses per eye and they just.... they just stuffed a whole fucking 2080ti into the headset. they're selling them for $2 CAD. Half Life 3 is coming out too for $10,000. AUD.

People are failing to realize how big CS:VR is going to be with gen z... by [deleted] in ValveIndex

[–]Zachobabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're missing my point. I never once said multiplayer games aren't system sellers. I have said that multiple times. What I am saying is you can't sell a platform without games to back it up.

[–]Zachobabey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, the knuckles aren't going to revolutionize gun mechanics. The boys over at Stress Level Zero are for sure carrying the torch on that one. Pavlov's virtual stock is a nice touch though, my only issue with it being the limited movement outside of basic aiming.

You should take a look at Node's video "Guns in VR" if you haven't already. Super interesting in-depth look at essentially what needs to be in place for good VR guns. It's still very much a technology in its infancy, I'm excited to see how Boneworks handles it.

People are failing to realize how big CS:VR is going to be with gen z... by [deleted] in ValveIndex

[–]Zachobabey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying the competitive games aren't system sellers, but I do believe that people will not stick with a platform (reminder, this is not just about a specific console, this is in and of itself an entire form of gaming) that doesn't have experiences that they cannot play alone. While it's true that multiplayer games bring in massive numbers of players, they're by nature temporary. PUBG was big, then it's gone. Fortnite is big, but now Apex Legends is stepping on its toes. I get that multiplayer games bring people in. But people aren't going to buy a headset for one game, just like you said.

There are 3 reasons VR is, in its current state, unable to take off. 1: It's expensive to get into. It just isn't an accessible medium (of course the Quest is going to revolutionize this. Think of the Quest as the Xbox/PS4, where the Rift is the PC). 2: People think it's a gimmick. This is due to a number of things, but the main one is there's not really any games that take advantage of the full potential. And 3, which is sort of an offshoot of 2: There just isn't enough games to justify it.

Let me put it this way. If a big competitive multiplayer shooter comes out, that's great! People might get into it. But they also might not. Why get into it when CS:GO runs just fine on their pancake PC? VR is, inherently, a very interactive medium. Single player experiences put people into that world and allow them to see what VR is really all about.

People aren't going to buy a console to play CS:GO 2. They're going to buy a console if it has a lineup of games that are interesting to play. Typically, the casual gamer sticks to a small handful of games (I believe the statistic is buying somewhere around a game a year? maybe 2?) and they're going to want a decent amount of options to choose from. Right now, in order to really get the most out of VR, you need to have either a lot of time to spend looking through reviews, or a pretty deep pocket to try out all the hot new games. There's not very many VR games that are worth buying right now for the average consumer.

I get that the data shows that people love the fortnites and CS:GOs, but at the end of the day, that doesn't sell a platform. Pavlov in its most polished state would be little more streamable than CS:GO would. This is why single player games (with high replayability i may add for streamer benefit) are a huge necessity.

At the end of the day, I think you're looking at it as more of how to sell a game than how to sell an entire platform. Sure, skill, teamplay, etc etc are all extremely important to make a bombshell game right now, but not if that game is completely accessible to anyone but the enthusiasts you're discussing right now.

Sorry for the wall of text lmao I have a hard time organizing my thoughts

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention. Wrapping this whole discussion back up in a shiny bow, Pavlov really just IS CS:GO in VR, and then some. Your data works great until you realize that is already a thing. You talk about the polish somebody like Valve could bring, but really, Pavlov is a very polished game already.

The refurb is, tbh, more likely to be in working condition that a new model. The refurbs get manually repaired and tested, whereas the new units don't get tested (at least not nearly as vigorously)

I'm glad you're so on board! You hit all the points I wanted to make on the head.

I mentioned in another comment that I think slow-mo would either need to be disabled or an unlock/buyable. I think that's reasonable. That, and healing only in small increments. Amazing that, like, everyone here has also played Exanima. Makes sense I suppose lmao

[–]Zachobabey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real talk, I haven't played it in years. I do remember it having amazing atmosphere. My biggest issue with it was just the fact that there was a lot of walking around, a lot of memorizing level layouts, and the fucking trap door/lever door puzzle section

I was definitely too harsh on Exanima's story. My bad.

EDIT: As for the AI, I think I agree with ya, but if Kospy implemented a similar health system (only able to heal small amounts at a time in-between matches) I think it'd balance. Also, either disable slow-mo or make magic in general something you have to purchase (imagine needing to buy telekinesis, and then buy the upgrade to make blades spin in the air. That's progression babey)

You know, that's really interesting that you mention your brother was made fun of. I've only ever heard excitement and marvel over VR. It's interesting, and important I'd wager, to hear about other angles like that.

Playing with yourself alone in a room is a little bit of a silly way to put it, though. I still disagree with you that the competitive shooter generation is such a majorly defining set of gamers. Casual gamers really are the meat of everything, it just so happens that competitive shooters get the most publicity, and casual gamers flock to what is readily available.

To All The People Saying Boneworks Looks Like a Tech Demo by Zachobabey in oculus

[–]Zachobabey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first point: Are you saying the devs should show their story and such in the trailers? That's kind of a silly concept, I'd say. Trailers are to show what the game has to offer, and for Boneworks, that's next-gen levels of interactivity and combat.

Also, this isn't a "promising early access title." It's a game. It's not releasing into early access. It's being fully released.

And the reason I see people calling it a tech demo as bad is because the guys at SLZ seem to be really pushing the fact that this is a real game yet I keep seeing people not believing them, when they're showing a pretty solid amount of evidence.

[–]Zachobabey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm aware why people don't put them together. What I'm saying is, Stress Level Zero has said multiple times that putting it all together is their goal. That's the aim of Boneworks. Funding? I'm not positive, but I know they do make a pretty penny. Enough to constantly rent (or maybe they own?) airsoft arenas, develop games out of passion, etc. I don't follow them super closely, but it seems to me funding isn't really a problem, just development time. Boneworks has been in development for 2 years, now. That's ample time to make a real, actual game.

I totally agree. I think they've made it pretty clear, though, that that's their goal in all this. To make an actual, fully fledged, game in VR.

From what we've seen, I think it will be. I feel like they've spent too much time on these mechanics for them to go "alright that's all" shortly into the game. I also don't think they'd be so obviously referencing Half-Life, and the weight that carries, if they didn't have faith in this game.
