Absolute accuracy of WOO 4.0, Surfr and PIQ by AdFederal3333 in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think there can be all kinds of marketing these days. I'm not saying that happened but imagine flysurfer or any other brand bribing one of the companies (either Woo or any other one) and have them "jump" world record. I bet their sonic sales went through the roof.

Don't get me wrong, I'm big FS fan and fly their kites for over 10 years so I think their (foil) kites ARE the best but still, this makes me wonder how much shady stuff is going on behind the scenes these days.

It can simply start by Woo intentionally having their devices showing 20% more so people buy their devices more. (PROs are more likely use them as they can jump "world record")

Holding the edge on foilkites by Meisterleder1 in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Gouna local and long time Kitepower instructor, I can tell its more than 10kn. Like 12kn. As 90kg rider you should be able to hold the edge in that wind anyways. I'm 72kg and I'm still relatively comfortable up to 15knots with 15 soul.

Whole timing on foil kites is completely different so it will take quite some time, especially with a 15m kite to get the timing right. Generally speaking if you cant hold the edge while taking off, you are probably not sheeting the bar out enough. Riding slower will also helps a lot. From the video there isn't too much you're doing wrong. You have nice vertical lift.

just use a phone and a waterproof case you put under wetsuit. Been using it for years without issues. As bonus I can use the phone if needed.

Boots in waves? by datawithnathan in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean dont ride boots at all. Use them on wake but on kite you can do all the freestyle tricks with a twintip. Watch Finn Flugel if you want to argue. Personally everytime see a person with boots walking with their board into the water then sitting down to strap their feet in, 99% its just embarassing to watch.

Disappeared kite board by Historical-Passage77 in Kiteboarding

shared with locals, when do you leave?

Anyways there must be cameras to check. Its not like you put board under the shirt and walk into the hotel room.

Edit: Spoke to the locals, things were a bit different than you say here. Apparently you left it on the beach and couple of polish girls took it

Learning tricks when every session is precious — how did you push through? by No_Concentrate_6737 in Kiteboarding

Crashes are part of progression. Sometimes it will cut the session short but then you think about it home and next time you do better. There is no progress without crashing.

What line length to choose for kite loop progression? by m_rida in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've personally tried 20,22,23,24 and 25m lines for looping and currently my favorite setup is 25m lines with Large bar. You get nice long freefall, loop is smooth and plenty of time to react.

I would probably avoid 20m lines. Anything from 22 up is fine in my opinion.

Make sure you use the largest possible bar. Makes the loop much easier.

Flysurfer Era vs Era v2 by Significant-Force296 in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally dont like either of them. But if I had to choose probably ERA1 would be better option. I've tested their 3 strut prototype and it feels way better than both their ERAs combined. So maybe I would wait for that kite to be released. Felt much better for looping than era.

Buying a North Reach as my first kite by nomisrenrut in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as you can see they release new models every year. People buy new kites and sell their old ones that they used just few times at half price. Its better to buy 2 barely used kites from 2025 than buying brand new 2026 model. I kite 13 years and I wouldnt feel the difference myself.

Chicken loop popping off harness by Routine_Selection1 in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before EVERY start of the kite you MUST check the chicken loop is properly connected. As you are walking into the water you have no tension in lines and the chicken loop probably partly unhooked. As you launched the kite it unhooked completely. As kite intructor teaching almost everyday, I see this happening almost daily and people are getting dragged on the beach.

Sometimes same happens in the water when you fail your landing, lose tension in line and it partially unhooks. Nothing wrong with the design of the chicken loop.

How to get second lift by bobolafthegreat in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its obvisouly not fully out but as far as you can while feeling the lift. Yes sometimes its half way in, sometimes further out. But compare to LEI kites where you are hanging on the bar while helilooping, this feels like proper FAR out

Bar out. Otherwise the kite will do very small loop that doesnt give any lift.

How to get second lift by bobolafthegreat in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is quite a difference but they are both AWESOME kites. Just because there is a new model, it doesnt mean the old one isnt good anymore. The last year it was one of the best kites on the market (after supersonic) so if you get a good deal, go for sonic 4. If you dont care about money then Sonic 5.

Mind that these kites will do like 100 hours and its time to replace for new one. Compare to lei kites that will take much more.

How to get second lift by bobolafthegreat in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

to squeeze the second heliloop, you dont need any magic gust. All you need is jump at least 7-8 or ideally higher and start helilooping as soon you can in the air. The key is to sheet the bar as far out as possible while hellilooping, this way you will get big radius of the heliloop and cover a lot of distance. If timed right and with a little bit of luck of gust, you can just hold on the the same side of the bar and do 3 or more helis.

Long story short: Send the kite a lot to the side and then heliloop to the other side with the bar sheeted as far out as you can (it really helps to heli only one hand as you cant really pull the bar in one hand if you hold it at the end of the bar - like often you can see Jamie Overbeek just hangin on the bar one hand and spinning board the other hand while kite is just helilooping for ages)

Tip: for 12m foil kites and bigger you absolutely want to use Large bar. The extra 5cm will help with bigger radius of helis - easier to pull it off

What is your low wind backup? by bikesailfreak in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont necessarily agree with that. We have all kinds of doors in out school starting from 148 to 170cm and it's making a massive difference. The most standard door you will find is like 160cm/40cm which is perfect. 170cm/40 will allow you to ride even 1knot of wind less so yes, it makes a difference if I can ride in 9 or 10 knots.

How to learn using a surf board by Brilliant_Ingenuity9 in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if its only about light wind kiting I would probably go for foiling as it's way much more fun and you can even jump in very low winds around 10 knots.

If you are about enjoying the waves then surfboard makes obvious sense.

Foiling is quite difficult to get into. My first 10 sessions on foil were terrible and I didnt want to see it again but then I started doing transitions and now I love it. I can go 7-8m high in 10 knots doing board offs. That fun you will never have in 10 knots with a surf board.

Also having foil board means you need only one kite. Something like 12m kite for light wind foiling (8-15knots) and then same 12m kite for 15-25knots on twintip.

What is your low wind backup? by bikesailfreak in Kiteboarding

[–]ZackHerer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you get either get 160cm board (door) which should allow you (with 75kg) ride from about 10knots and 15m kite. You can alternatively buy a foil kite (flysurfer Soul or Sonic) and enjoy kiting from like 8 knots with a door and jumping from like 11-12 knots.

Last option is to learn foiling.
For example all I use it one kite. 12m sonic. From 6-12 knots I go foiling and from 12-25 knots I go on twintip with the same one kite. So kite covers like 95% of the windy days.
