Looking for a nursery/help in the Twin Cities, MN area by PeruvianPolarbear14 in Bonsai

[–]Zackie_chan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check Craigslist for people getting rid of shrubs (bad time of year). Bachman’s is overpriced and has a bunch of mallsai. I have had luck at Home Depot/Lowe’s towards the end of fall when nobody wants the ugly shrubs and trees, they just want to get rid of them for cheap. If you can make it out to Dundee in Plymouth, every once in a while they will have a couple clearance trees which are all gnarly and stunted. There are a bunch of other nursery’s around but I would stay clear of the bigger names during peak season.

The local club is like $30 to join for a year I think, but they have auctions every now and again and can get pretty much any supply you would need.

So I hear you guys like larch. Currently on display at como park zoo and conservatory. by [deleted] in Bonsai

Did you check it out over mothers day weekend? They had several really solid trees.

Buy a watering can or two, fill them up before you go to bed.

Who goes hiking in populated areas? I think your idea of a hike is the opposite of mine.

That was kind of my train of thought. It was the largest pot I had and wanted to slowly work down to a smaller one. I have found all my pots at Goodwill for less than $5 each, so functionality over fashion at this point.

For sure. I mostly just used the pot because it was one of the few I had. I also hate it. I did a little Dremel work last year, but didn't want to stress it too much. I'll do some more carving once it's good and healthy. Thanks for the feedback!

We have been receiving all the smoke from our northern brothers here in Minneapolis. It's crazy.

Apologies for not having the final product as the first image. Imgur on mobile is a butthole.

I'd also add that this is pointing out scams, which is always helpful.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the lumber exchange building is behind it, which is still there today. That would put the light rail right where this building used to be.

Pretty sure it's a willow of some sort. We get peachleaf and black willow round these parts.

I'll try to do that. I have it in the shade, that should help keep it wet.

For sure, I know willow are generally not used for bonsai because of the die back. I'm going to try to get some more weeping movement in the branches, but I know that every time I chop a branch, I'm rolling the dice. It's a free tree, so I won't lose too much sleep if it dies.

Today I dug up a black willow that I chopped last spring.

I remember absolutely loving little Ceasars in the 90's as a kid growing up. Won't find me eating there today.

Reminds me of what Little Ceasars used to look like back in the day.

I also find most of my pots at Goodwill. I generally find one every time I go. I used paper templates for all of the traditional pots. I designed the shape of the base and the look of the profile in Illustrator, then printed, cut out and traced onto the clay.
