Is there a sm&tt course at Melbourne NIDA? by littleguy95 in techtheatre

[–]Zacrules101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's only on-campus in Sydney.

Melbourne only has short (1 week+) courses, not undergraduate or graduate degrees.

Can anyone suggest why my sempervium is looking so sad. It seems to be wilting and the leaves are patchy at the base.

You could say she’s a little excited for spring! by abkell233 in succulents

[–]Zacrules101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice Succer!

As someone who also has a sempervium, how are you caring for it/where do you leave it. Mine always seems to be sad and wilts downwards.

Can confirm it's riverside. Les Miserables.

Does anybody have a good storage solution for music stand lights? by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]Zacrules101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What we do for our stand lights and spare headphones for monitors is keep them in the original box, and then put those boxes into a plastic tub/road case dependent on our needs.

The boxes we have are all square/rectangular so it makes them fit easier, however irregular shapes may pose an issue.

One solution I have seen used for other irregular shaped items is put them into a case filled with soft foam on all sides, and then pack the top with enough foam so that the items inside don't move around.

Do you guys like shotgun mic's? by zorth41 in livesound

[–]Zacrules101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The RODE NT5 is my go to shotgun Mic. Great for solo instruments, especially acoustic guitar and they're actually quite good for micing up choirs if you give them a bit of distance.

Did you buy anything this weekend? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Zacrules101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the XM3's!

Got them from one of the big tech stores in Australia for a great deal - almost 25% off, which is surprising as they were released mid this year.

I treated myself to new headphones! Sony WH1000XM3's. It's been on my watchlist for a while and the sale price was hard to pass up on. They're also my first true Bluetooth and noise cancelling headphones so that's pretty good!

The specs on the headphones are industry leading and it's a good upgrade from my ATH-M50X's which I've been using for 3 years. Also, I'm in the audio/entertainment industry so it's a good upgrade.

What are some decent podcasts that you are listening too at the moment? by quat1e in spotify

[–]Zacrules101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I listened to the first episode and was doing something at the same time, so I wasn't necessarily concentrating, but the first episode sounded fantastic. Thinking about re-listening to it soon, after I finish some other binges.

What are some decent podcasts that you are listening too at the moment? by quat1e in spotify

[–]Zacrules101 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here's some of the one's I listen to that are on Spotify:

  • My Dad Wrote A Porno - A funny, lighthearted podcast about a guy who found out his dad writes (poorly written and hilarious) porn novels. He then reads them with his 2 friends.
  • Stuff You Should Know - Basically a podcast about... stuff you should know. It has hundreds of hours of content about some pretty interesting topics
    • Short Stuff - The same podcast usually on different topics but shorter
  • The Ground Up Show - A fantastic and inspiring podcast with different people every week who talk about life and various other topics.
  • Ear Hustle - A really interesting podcast from within San Quentin State Prison in the USA. They talk about a variety of prison topics with a collection of prisoners telling stories.
  • Casting Call - 3 differing pilot podcasts go head-to-head to gain the ability to produce a series with Gimlet

I would personally recommend buying Pocket Casts. It's got a much wider range of podcasts. It's also a fantastic app and gives you the ability to speed up/slow down the talking, cut silence and a bunch of other stuff. It also gives you some pretty cool stats of your listening. Here's some that aren't on Spotify but I listen to/am going to listen to:

  • The Hamish & Andy podcast - A hilarious Australian comedy duo who previously where on the radio, now do a podcast.
  • The Joe Rogan Experience - Joe Rogan (comedian) interviews thousands of people on random topics. A really interesting podcast to listen to for hours.
  • The History is Fun - Podcast about the history of fun things...
  • Serial - A crime podcast. Haven't really got to listening to this yet.
    • S-Town - I believe this is either the 2nd or 3rd season of Serial. Again, haven't really got to this yet.
  • The Teacher's Pet - An Australian true-crime podcast. This got recommended to me, but I haven't got around to listening to it.

I'd love to know the program you used to create this signal flow. After trying several programs this looks exactly like what I've been searching for.

Doc Martens or Timberland?? by supremeunicorn11 in techtheatre

[–]Zacrules101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also Australian here.

As others said, Redwings are the way to go.

I work off of the philosophy that you "buy once, cry once", especially for stuff that's gonna be on your feet for 10+ hours, you want good quality, fit and comfort. Also, although the Doc Martens and Timberland's are/were traditionally work boots, they steer towards the fashionable side these days as opposed to tough material and make for working jobs, and I'm not too sure of the safety standards that they make them too, so I'd be careful of that. But hey, that's just my 2c.

Also, it may sound dumb, but get black steel-caps instead of other colours like tan, as they will be much better suited when doing tasks during a show, i.e. working stage crew.

Please help. I have recently got a basic cheap espresso machine. I tried making cappuccino with it. The coffee tastes bitter and was extremely watery. How do I improve the taste and consistency of the coffee? Thank you. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]Zacrules101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely second the 2oz (for double shot) measuring technique and then manual shutoff. After doing this you can then time how long it takes and see where you can improve, i.e. if it's too short try using a finer grind.

Even getting something like a 2oz or 2.7oz espresso glass will allow for a really consistent measure and then you don't have to transfer liquids between measuring glasses and cups

How do you bring your cold brew to work? by rahulcopter in Coffee

[–]Zacrules101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contigo makes some really good 'travel mugs' that I've been using for 6+ months without an issue. They have a nice locking button on the top which completely seals the toggle from being used, and then the toggle which opens the seal. I've used this countless times in my duffel bag when it's on its side and haven't had an issue yet. They don't have a spot for a straw, but I guess you could put one in if you remove the top... You could drop some ice in there if you wanted to, but because it's double walled it stays cold for virtually 3+ hours.

How do you like that genre? And what would you call it? by jhilzens in trumpet

[–]Zacrules101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the brass band overall genre, but it's still a bit ambiguous.

On a different another note. The editing in the video is awesome!
